Ilyana (Japanese: イレース Elaice) is a traveling mage from Tellius. She travels the world with Muston's merchant caravan, and through her journeys, she met both Ike and Micaiah and aided them in the fights for the liberation of Crimea and Daein, respectively.
Biography
Early life
Ilyana was born and grew up in a town somewhere in Tellius, but around the year 641 (four years prior to the Mad King's War), she left home to travel. She quickly found that she had trouble surviving without the support of friends and family, and one day passed out on the side of a road, where she was found by Muston and the other merchants. She joined their caravan as a companion on their travels across Tellius. On several occasions, she accompanied the merchants on sailing journeys on ships, where she would always get seasick.[1]
The Mad King's War
When the Mad King's War broke out in 645, Ilyana and the caravan were in Gallia, and during a rainstorm, Ilyana was separated from the rest of the caravan. She tried to find shelter from the rain in a fort where, unknown to her, Ike and the Greil Mercenaries were taking shelter, but she was caught by Daein soldiers who were preparing to raid the fort and was forced into their service with the threat of execution.[2] In the middle of the attack on the fort, she was stopped by Ike after he noticed how ill she looked, and she joined forces with him when he realized that he was protecting the same merchants from whom Ilyana had been separated.
After the battle, Ike and Soren hired the merchant caravan to join them on their mission to protect Elincia, and Ilyana accompanied them and became a fighter in Ike's service. She continued to fight with the Greil Mercenaries, and later the Crimean army, for the year through the rest of the war, and after it ended, she left to continue traveling with the merchant caravan.
Daein and the Laguz Alliance
In the summer of 648, two years after Ashnard's defeat, Ilyana and the caravan were passing through Daein again when she and Aimee were separated from the rest of the caravan and arrested by Begnion soldiers.[3] They were taken to Glaive Prison, where they met Micaiah, Laura, and "Kurth". The five were soon released from prison by Sothe and Ilyana assisted Micaiah in fighting their way out through the soldiers, with Ilyana desiring "vengeance" for the poor quality of the prison food. After escaping and reuniting with Muston and the others, the caravan chose to accompany Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade on their mission to oppose the Begnion occupation, and so Ilyana fought as one of the Dawn Brigade and, later, the Daein Liberation Army.
After the last victory at Nevassa, Ilyana left Daein with the rest of the caravan. She and the caravan were hired again by Ike in the laguz-Begnion war after he was hired by Ranulf, and she fought with his army again. As the war continued, she joined the Apostle's Army under Ike, along with the rest of the Greil Mercenaries. When Daein's army relentlessly tried to stop them, Ilyana was forced to confront her old friends from Daein on the battlefield. She later participated in the battles against the Disciples of Order. After Ashera's defeat, she continued to travel with the merchants.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ilyana is a mage specializing in thunder tomes that joins in Chapter 8 as a passive enemy unit, and can be recruited by Ike. Upon joining, she can deal reasonable damage with her thunder tomes but has low base speed for her join time. Her physical durability is very bad (slightly alleviated by Shade). She is the only unpromoted player mage that starts with a higher thunder rank than E rank, which is the best magic type in the game, so she can access higher-level thunder tomes more quickly than her peers, Soren and Tormod.
Her good magic, skill, and luck growths ensure she can do good accurate magic damage through most of the game, but her speed growth is very low, so she will likely have doubling issues for much of the game unless she is given some Speedwings or rigged levels. Compared to Soren, who has better magic, skill, and speed growths and earlier availability and Adept, Ilyana has a higher strength and luck growth; so typically, Soren will be a more powerful and useful long-term mage than Ilyana. However, she can still be useful as another mage, especially after promotion as she can use staves. Her higher strength growth is also a benefit for her, as this will allow her to hold heavier tomes without losing speed once it increases, meaning that, while she's slower than Soren, their attack speed will be similar due to her not being weighed down as much.
Ilyana starts with the Shade skill which is recommended to keep on her due to her terrible durability; note that it is not a very reliable skill and should not be counted on. Adept will help alleviate her doubling issues, and she has respectable skill to take advantage of it, though there are better recipients for it.
Ilyana has a light affinity, which gives defense and accuracy. The extra defense boost rarely helps her, as she often gets 2HKO'd anyways. Mordecai is a good partner with a water affinity; at max support, both units will gain +3 defense and a slight attack and accuracy boost. Zihark is another good partner with similar mobility that gives purely avoid, and benefits slightly from Ilyana's support bonus. Lucia also has an earth affinity and is the same class as Zihark, though she joins extremely late so it is hard to take advantage of supporting her with Ilyana.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
Ilyana is a playable unit. She first becomes available in Part I as part of Micaiah's party, and returns in early Part III to join Ike's party. She can be freely allocated to any of the three armies in Part IV.
If a Radiant Dawn game was started via a data transfer from Path of Radiance, any stat Ilyana maximized in Path of Radiance will result in a boost to her base in the stat in question in Radiant Dawn; her HP receives a +5 bonus under these conditions, while all other stats receive a +2 bonus. The below stats are Ilyana's default stats if no transfer is made or if she capped no stats in Path of Radiance.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ilyana is the only Thunder Mage in the game, joining in 1-3. Her offensive bases allow her to do significant damage from the backline, and while her bulk is poor, especially for her level, it's still enough to take a hit in her initial joining period, unlike other fragile Dawn Brigade members. Her offense can be unreliable, however, since she primarily uses thunder tomes, which are the least powerful and least accurate type of Anima magic. Her magic and resistance growths are good and her skill growth is high, giving her some ability to compensate for the flaws of Thunder Magic. However, her low speed, defense, and HP growths mean that she will quickly lose much of her offensive and any of her defensive utility, even when trained. While her stats can be improved with transfer bonuses, she effectively needs rigged level-ups to cap speed in the previous game. Her strangely high strength growth is effectively wasted on her, as she can already wield Elthunder at base without penalty and gains enough strength from promotion bonuses alone to keep pace with the weight of all Thunder tomes except Bolting.
Ilyana is a unique character in that she's the only Part I unit that joins the Greil Mercenaries in 3-2, and thus has the best availability in the entire game. If the player wants to transfer anything from Part I to Ike's group, giving them to Ilyana is the only way to do so without voluntarily recruiting Zihark or Jill in 3-7. Ilyana has access to much more experience and combat with Ike's group than Micaiah's, and once she promotes into a Thunder Sage, she will be able to use fire and wind magic, with the former being especially useful to her, as it's the strongest of the Anima triangle, more accurate than thunder magic (which has a higher critical hit chance, however) and helps her against the wind mages that have the advantage over thunder magic. However, if the player invested significant resources into Ilyana, other Dawn Brigade characters will likely struggle more through Part III due to being more underleveled than without a trained Ilyana. Because of this, giving her an early promotion to serve as a filler unit is strongly recommended.
In Ike's army, a trained Ilyana is almost totally outmatched by Soren, who has similar base stats, slightly better offensive growths, vastly better weapon ranks and innate Adept. She is unlikely to acquire any level advantage over him, and if she does, it will only harm the Dawn Brigade further. As Soren is generally regarded as a weaker Greil Mercenary, this is especially damning. Ilyana's offense will suffer over time due to the lack of improved forging options for all magic, and while using Fire tomes can somewhat improve it, it may also complicate her ability to make use of her unique access to Rexbolt in Part 4, although giving her Discipline can help her in achieving the SS rank in thunder magic and level up her other types of magic, especially since a Discipline scroll can be stolen via Sothe as early as the chapter where she joins and in 2-2, another one appears as an hidden item, so Heather, Nephenee or Brom can get it and pass it to her once they join Ike's group. Ilyana can still contribute well, as the chapters with Ike's group starting by Chapter 3-2 are full of Dragonmasters, including Istvan, the boss of Chapter 3-2, and as they are dragon units, they can't take magical hits and are especially weak to thunder magic, although a Fire tome deals only slightly less damage to them compared a Thunder tome. Her speed is tied with defense for her lowest stat growth, which will leave her at risk of being doubled, but as a Thunder Sage, she will usually cap strength and skill quite quickly when trained, and on average, she will cap magic before her second promotion, so she can benefit from BEXP to improve her speed.
If Ilyana is trained for Part 4, she works best on Micaiah's team. The desert route chapter benefits Ilyana because mages don't lose movement in the desert; as she is a thunder mage, she can also kill the various dragonknights on that chapter. While Sanaki can do the same, she is much more fragile. Ilyana's case for endgame selection, sunk cost fallacy put aside, rests entirely on Rexbolt access and its utility against the dragon laguz of 4-E-3. Between her mediocre stat progression and terrible caps, she will struggle to justify a spot otherwise. For example, the freshly joined and seldom-selected Bastian has comparable stats with far better weapon levels that allow for staff utility and better combat against non-dragon enemies. While Rexbolt allows her to defeat Red Dragons in 4-E-3 unassisted, any sufficiently trained Archsage is likely to be able to do the same with Thoron or potentially even Arcthunder on lower difficulties, including Bastian, who requires no investment. Rexbolt, like all SS tomes, has extremely poor durability, severely limiting usage of it. With it, she can typically deal around one quarter of Dheginsea's health, a significant help, but not centralizing enough to justify using a unit who is otherwise outcompeted by units with less or no investment costs.
Ilyana starts with the Shade skill, which helps account for player mistakes with exposing her (albeit unreliably). Resolve and Wrath each amplify her offense significantly, which can be easy to set up due to having enough physical durability to take one but bad enough to have low enough health after one hit. Otherwise, it is hard to recommend specific skills for her such as Adept, due to her bad long-term speed.
As the only unit available in both Micaiah's and Ike's parties, Ilyana has many options for supports. Whomever Ilyana supports in Part I, she will often not benefit from that unit's availability until Part IV (Jill and Zihark are the only two exceptions, but only if they defect to the Laguz Alliance), so it is best to consider supporting her with someone in Part I then deleting it and re-supporting her with someone in Part III. She has a light affinity which gives defense and accuracy, the latter which she strongly appreciates. Leonardo is a backline offensive unit whose water affinity gives attack and defense, which Ilyana benefits from. Laura has a wind affinity which boosts Ilyana's avoid and accuracy too. In Part III, Ilyana benefits the most from a fire affinity unit with similar movement as her, including Boyd, Mia, and Rhys.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are three different variations of Ilyana available to Heroes, both based on her storyline appearance in Path of Radiance. The normal variation of Ilyana is one of the characters added to the game in the Plumeria's Dream update, and became available for summoning by players on September 18, 2020. A Halloween variation of Ilyana was first made available to be summoned by players on October 9, 2019 in a special Halloween variation as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Treat Fiends update. Ilyana is one of a very few characters to date who had a special variation made available to players before their normal variation in which the normal variation has actually been added to the game, another example being Fiora. A young variation of Ilyana was made available between the period of April 7, 2022 through May 7, 2022 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Unlikely Friends update.

Personality and character
Ilyana is shy and meek, mostly keeping to herself and not going out of her way to introduce herself to others,[4] and she takes a while to realize when people are trying to get her attention, unless food is involved.[5] Even so, she greatly values the friends she does make, and was gravely upset when the war between the laguz and Begnion meant that her friends had to fight each other. She is fairly straightforward to the point of naivety, believing that the fights between her friends in both the Laguz Alliance and Daein were completely pointless and were hurting everone involved for no reason at all,[6] and particularly lamented how the war forced the likes of Zihark to neglect the principles which she once admired in them.[7]
Most of Ilyana's life revolves around food, as she is always hungry to the point of illness. She has a voracious appetite which needs to be constantly fed, or she will be overcome with dizziness and, in cases of extreme hunger, will faint. To get through this she eats much more food than her frail stature would suggest, normally enough to feed five people.[8] Part of her problem is that she rarely has enough gold to afford all the food she needs, forcing her to starve and faint instead.[9] Her need for food drives her to the point of desperate behavior described by Zihark as "feral", often stealing food from others and (possibly inadvertently) tricking her comrades into buying her dinner.[10] In cases of extreme hunger, she will even resort to blearily trying to eat things which are not food.[11] She makes a point of remembering people who she knows can provide good food for her.[12] As far as Ilyana knows, her constant hunger is not the result of an illness.[13] According to Lucia, the amount Ilyana eats is actually comparable to that of a laguz.[14]

Trivia
- Ilyana is one of only two playable units who start both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn in a completely unpromoted base class, the other being Jill. All other returning characters in Radiant Dawn are in advanced classes (including Mist because, although she is still a Cleric, that class is an advanced class in Radiant Dawn).
- Ilyana has the highest availability of any unit in Radiant Dawn, being available for 23 chapters in the game; two more than the main character, Micaiah.
- In Radiant Dawn, Ilyana is the only unit capable of wielding Rexbolt. This makes her the only unit in the entire game who effectively has a non-personal SS-rank weapon entirely exclusive to them, since all other SS-rank weapons have at least two potential playable users.
- Relatedly, Ilyana is the only playable character in the series capable of reaching SS-rank with thunder magic.
- In Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, there is a waitress who looks somewhat like Ilyana. They also share the same Japanese voice actress, Saori Gotō.
- According to Tellius Recollection, Ilyana was designed with an apparent age of 16 in Path of Radiance[15] and 19 in Radiant Dawn.[16]

- ↑ "Ilyana: Ooo...
Ike: You don't look so well. Are you all right?
Ilyana: I'm...seasick...When I was traveling with the merchants, we sometimes used...ships...Every time was the same... Urp...I'm...sorry.
Ike: Did you travel with Muston and the others for a long time?
Ilyana: About four years, all told. I had just left home, you see...I was all alone, and I couldn't find work. In my hometown, I had so many people I could depend on...but once I left, everything changed. If Muston's group hadn't found me by the side of the road, I'd probably be dead by now." — Ike and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Ilyana: You're awfully kind, aren't you?
Ike: You know, you don't look like any Daein soldier I've ever seen. Are you really one of them, or have they press-ganged you into service?
Ilyana: I was traveling with some merchants, but we got separated. I came here to escape this rain, but some soldiers in black found me. They thought I was a Crimean refugee.
Ike: Oh?
Ilyana: I tried to tell them who I was, but they wouldn't believe me. They said they would put me to the sword if I didn't help fight you. I'm...very sorry..." — Ilyana and Ike, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Micaiah: Why are you two in here?
Aimee: I wish I knew! I belong to a merchant caravan that was passing through en route to the next market day. When we arrived here, we were brought to this charming prison against our will. Now, we await the general's pleasure." — Micaiah and Aimee, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑ "Ilyana: Ah...
Mordecai: You look sickly.
Ilyana: I... I...know you...
Mordecai: I am Mordecai. You are Ilyana. We have not met.
Ilyana: You're right... I keep to myself, mostly... Even though we're on the same side, I'm often forgotten. Ahhh... Whoa" — Ilyana and Mordecai, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Gatrie: You there, young lady!
Ilyana: ...
Gatrie: Hello? Yes, you...the cute one!
Ilyana: ...
Gatrie: Oooh, I get it. Playing hard to get, eh? Tee hee hee!
Ilyana: Um... Are you...talking to me?
Gatrie: Phew, I finally got your attention. Aren't you a sly little minx!
Ilyana: Oh..." — Gatrie and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Ilyana: Oh...
Micaiah: Ilyana! I remember now... You said that you were a member of the Greil Mercenaries in Ashnard's War.
Ilyana: Yes.
Micaiah: I'm sorry.
Ilyana: Let's not do this. Please?
Micaiah: What?
Ilyana: Let's not fight.
Micaiah: If that means letting the Laguz Alliance get by us, I cannot agree to it.
Ilyana: I see... That's too bad.
Micaiah: How is everyone in the caravan?
Ilyana: They're fine.
Micaiah: I'm glad to hear that.
Ilyana: Maybe...we should fight.
Micaiah: What?
Ilyana: We're enemies now. We can't stand here and try to have a normal conversation. It's too strange...
Micaiah: Ilyana...
Ilyana: It'll be all right. I'm really strong against your spells, and my magic isn't powerful enough to defeat you. We'll be fine.
Micaiah: But if we're equally matched, why should we fight at all? It sounds...wrong.
Ilyana: Of course it's wrong! The fact that we're fighting is all wrong! We don't even dislike each other!
Micaiah: ...
Ilyana: Let's just fight and pretend like this conversation never took place." — Ilyana and Micaiah, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑ "Ilyana: Sir Zihark. It's not too late. Let's not fight.
Zihark: I can't do that... Daein has just freed itself. I can't betray it now.
Ilyana: Even if you have been ordered by Daein to hunt down laguz?
Zihark: I-I just...
Ilyana: But this isn't you! When I met you, you were so nice, and you never doubted yourself or your friends. You even risked your own life to fight on behalf of the laguz. And now you're throwing it all away...
Zihark: ...Ilyana.
Ilyana: Yes?
Zihark: Thank you. You've opened my eyes.
Ilyana: Pardon?
Zihark: I will leave the Daein army. My friends in Daein are dear to me, but I refuse to take part in any hunt, or lie to myself any longer.
Ilyana: Oh, Zihark, I'm so glad..." — Ilyana and Zihark, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑ "Zihark: How can you possibly eat so much and still be hungry? Last night you swiped the chicken wing right out of my hands! Does casting a few spells really make you that hungry?
Ilyana: To be honest, I don't know why I'm so hungry. I'm never full. I always get hungry as soon as I eat. Normally, I eat about as much food as five people. Today was tough because I only got enough food for three." — Zihark and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "I would love to eat big meals... But I can't. Because... well... I have no money... That's why I faint all the time." — Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
- ↑ "Zihark: You're hungry, though. I can tell from the feral look in your eyes.
Ilyana: Feral?! Excuse me?
Zihark: You're a bit of a celebrity among the men in the unit. They say you lure them in with your cute face and then run off with their snacks.
Ilyana: They do?
Zihark: Oh, yes they do! You're a beef jerky thief, aren't you? I know about the apple pie incident, too. Yeah... I know your tricks. Is it true that you don't remember their names, even after they buy you an expensive meal? That's just terrible.
Ilyana: No! It's just that... I collapse into a coma when I get too hungry! That's why I've got to accept everyone's generous food offers.
Zihark: Then at least remember their names! Even if you had ulterior motives, everyone likes... Er... Is kind to you." — Zihark and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Ilyana: So...hungry. Please...if you have anything...
Mia: Hold on a minute! Don't tell me you're always staggering around and fainting because you need a snack!
Ilyana: Yes... As soon as I finish eating, I get hungry again. That's why I faint.
Mia: Well, I don't have any food on me right now. I'll go get you something right away, though. We can't have you passed out on the ground like this!
Ilyana: Please...don't leave...
Mia: Whoa there! Let go! Hey! Stop trying to eat my foot!
Ilyana: Mmmm...so...tasty...
Mia: No, no, no! I can't have you feasting on my limbs! Somebody bring this girl some food! Anything, people! Old leather shoes, fruitcake...anything!" — Ilyana and Mia, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Ilyana: How interesting... Heather... Her name is Heather. I'll have to remember her name. She likes to feed me.
Ike: You still eating everything in sight?
Ilyana: Ah... Hello, Ike. I haven't seen you in a long time.
Ike: Glad to see you remember me.
Ilyana: Of course. I remember all of the mercenaries. Well, most of you, anyway. Oscar prepares such delicious meals. I remember that well enough. Oh, I can't wait to eat his food again.
Ike: Well, I can see you haven't changed a bit." — Ilyana and Ike, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑ "Mia: But you look sickly and ill. Why don't you go and see a priest?
Ilyana: I'm quite all right. The last time I saw a priest, he said I wasn't sick.
Mia: Hmm... Are you sure you weren't being bilked? Was he a real priest? You look like you're about to keel over." — Mia and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Lucia: How much do you usually eat?
Ilyana: When I cook, I usually make... six or seven helpings...
Lucia: Er... You're not a laguz, are you?
Ilyana: No..." — Lucia and Ilyana, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ FE PoR: Ilyana Character Profile (P. 104) Translation | kantopia, www.kantopia.wordpress.com, Retrieved: 24 March 2018
