Constance von Nuvelle (pronounced /ˈkɒnstæns vɒn nuˈvɛl/[key]; Japanese: コンスタンツェ=フォン=ヌーヴェル Konstanze von Nouvelle) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, made available via downloadable content. Constance plays a prominent role in the DLC side story, Cindered Shadows.
Biography
Constance von Nuvelle is the sole survivor of House Nuvelle, a noble house of the Adrestian Empire that fell during the Dagda and Brigid War. When she was growing up, she would commonly visit House Bartels, and became friends with Emile and Mercedes during her visits. She also became familiar with other noble children, especially the heir to House Aegir, Ferdinand.
House Nuvelle fell because of their secrecy and refusal to marry with other noble houses. While it is listed that the house's Crest is the Crest of Macuil, in truth, they bear the Crest of Noa, one of the lost Crests of the Four Apostles. As the sole survivor, Constance is the sole bearer of the Crest. The fall of her house was so traumatic, she fears direct sunlight and suffers a severe change in personality when she is outdoors in the daytime.
Constance attended the Fhirdiad School of Sorcery; she graduated in Imperial Year 117, one year before Annette and Mercedes enrolled. After graduating, Constance took refuge in Abyss as a member of the Ashen Wolves, plotting her chance to revive her fallen house.
After the timeskip, if Constance was recruited, she returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies the group throughout the war. If not recruited, Constance disappears from Abyss, and her whereabouts are unknown.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Constance is one of two primary spellcasters from the Ashen Wolves house, the other being Hapi, and can be recruited after completing Chapter 2 of the Cindered Shadows expansion. She is essentially the black magic counterpart to Lysithea, with the same high growth in magic, albeit with a slightly higher cap. Unfortunately, magic is her only high-growth stat; all of her other stats, especially HP, strength, luck, and defense, are at best average or outright poor. Constance's spell list is exceptional, with spells like Fimbulvetr, Sagittae, and Agnea's Arrow dealing extremely high magical damage. Furthermore, she is one of the few units that can learn the rare and powerful spell Bolting, and is arguably the only unit in the game that can use it effectively due to the disadvantages of the other two Bolting users: Manuela has a Reason weakness, while Hilda has low magic. Constance also has access to Soulblade, a sword combat art that makes use of her higher magic stat and resistance, resulting in a much more powerful blow than most of her other spells.
Constance's personal skill, Circadian Beat, will grant her a small boost in defense and resistance when fighting in maps with sunny skies, while instead boosting strength and magic when fighting in maps with cloudy or rainy skies, or that take place indoors; the effect is reflected in her portrait, with her eyes shaded and sporting a sad expression if the defensive boosts are active. In Part I, slightly more than half of the maps are indoors or overcast, granting her the offensive boost; however, in Part II, nearly all maps in all routes are outdoors and sunny, granting her the unfavorable defensive boost, as she is already extremely frail, and two points in her defensive stats rarely save her from being one-shot.
Constance has a Budding Talent in Brawling, which when realized will grant her Mystic Blow, giving her a total of three magical combat arts to use. However, pursuing brawling is not a good idea with Constance for a variety of reasons. Constance will deal almost no damage with physical weapons, especially gauntlets, due to her low strength. Furthermore, Mystic Blow cannot perform a follow-up attack, which means that until she reaches A-rank in Brawling and can use the magical Aura Knuckles, she will be unable to capitalize on gauntlets' main strength, which is their ability to double attack. Furthermore, most of the magical-oriented classes that Constance is attuned to do not allow the use of gauntlets under normal conditions. Constance's hidden talent is more or less a gimmick that, until very late in the game, will produce less results than her spells and Soulblade.
Constance's Crest of Noa grants her a 20% chance to save spell charges when casting spells, similar to Annette's Minor Crest of Dominic, but with a higher proc rate. However, the effect is still unreliable due to its low activation rate, and conserving spell uses is irrelevant if Constance is using a class that increases her spell uses.
With a Crest, Constance can still wield all Heroes' Relics without suffering backlash damage. As a result, she can use Thyrsus to ensure that few enemies are immune to her spells.
Constance is better off following a magical promotion path due to her excellent array of spells but poor physical abilities. The best way to accomplish this is for her to be promoted to Monk, then to Mage, while also mastering the class for Fiendish Blow. You can then promote her to a Warlock and then to a Gremory if you want extra spell charges or a Dark Flier. The Dark Flier class provides excellent mobility without resistance from terrain, as well as having Black Tomefaire as an innate ability, and it works well with mastering Bowbreaker from the Warlock class. If you don't want her getting shot down by arrows but still want her to keep up with the rest of her teammates, you can make her a Dark Knight.
Obtaining a brawling boon would make it slightly easier for Constance to certify for the War Cleric class; passing the certification will increase her strength to at least 17 (19, after factoring in the War Cleric's class modifier), giving her a better AS overall when using her spells or other weapons. However, the class itself hinders her otherwise excellent spell list, reducing it to half of its uses, making a War Cleric a suboptimal choice in comparison to most other magic-wielding classes. Generally, Constance prefers mounted classes because they give her access to Canto, which allows her to reposition herself out of enemy range after attacking or using Rescue.

Personality and character
Despite her long stay in Abyss, Constance dreams of reviving House Nuvelle. Her polite speech cannot hide her domineering nature. She acts different when in sunlight compared to indoors. When indoors, she speaks in an excited tone and frequently laughs loudly; when outdoors, she speaks in a much more reserved tone, she apologizes frequently, and she has little self confidence.
Constance has an adoration for sorcery, and often creates spells of her own. She seeks to gain recognition from the world for her magical talents.
In the Japanese version, she speaks formally. For example, Constance refers to herself using the formal 私 watakushi instead of the more usual 私 watashi, and she uses the polite forms of verbs.

Endings
- Constance's title is "Scion of Nuvelle" on the Crimson Flower route only.
Constance, Sorcery Incarnate (single ending, Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
For her service in war, and her innovations in magic, Constance von Nuvelle was among the first to receive peerage in the new Fódlan. For generations thereafter, her noble house was valued as a leader in magical research and development.
Constance, Scion of Nuvelle (single ending, Crimson Flower)
For her service in war, and her innovations in magic, Constance Von Nuvelle was among the first to receivepeerage from Emperor Edelgard. Though her noble house was given no guarantee of power on a hereditary basis, Constance made certain that House Nuvelle would be valued as the leader in magical research and development for generations to come.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Constance, who was given peerage for her service in the war and permitted to revive House Nuvelle. Praised for her innovative talent, she rapidly rose to prominence in the new era, and her house came to be relied upon as a valued leader in magical research and development for generations to come. She was not without detractors, however. Jealous rumors persisted throughout her life that the rays of the sun compelled her to retreat into hiding, threatening to reveal her monstrous true form.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate (Azure Moon)
After taking his place as the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced his marriage to Constance, who was given peerage for her service in war and permitted to revive House Nuvelle. Praised for her innovative talent, she rapidly rose to prominence in the new era, and her house came to be relied upon as a valued leader in magical research and development for generations. Though the couple was known during their time as pioneer reformers for the church, they were remembered best for their charming, if unnerving, anecdotes of a wife's relentless insistence on using her husband as a test subject for experiments.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Constance, Scion of Nuvelle (Crimson Flower)
Almost as soon as Byleth and Constance were wed in a spectacular ceremony, the battle with those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Constance's efforts to understand and implement the magical techniques of the enemy quickly became instrumental, both to the fight and to the era of peaceful Imperial rule that followed. Though, the couple was known during their time for their countless contributions to the Empire, they were remembered best for their charming, if unnerving, anecdotes of a wife's relentless insistence on using her husband as a test subject for experiments.
Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Constance, Scion of Nuvelle
For her service in the war and her innovations in magic, Constance von Nuvelle was among the first to receive peerage from Emperor Edelgard. Though her noble house was given no guarantee of power on a hereditary basis, Constance made certain that House Nuvelle would be relied upon in helping to achieve Edelgard's vision of a new social order. The emperor kept Constance close at hand and routinely recognized her counsel as valuable, which helped to bolster Constance's own sense of worth. It is rumored that the two were also dear personal friends and that they would slip away from duties of governance to traipse through the capital together.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After officially becoming the new Duke of Aegir, Ferdinand found that he had a new neighbor in Constance, whose revived noble house was granted the old Hrym territory for its domain. They were married in short order, and their adjoining territories were merged. The couple's diverse talents helped them overcome countless obstacles together, in pursuit of a restored land. They had many children, including one who became well-known in her own right for the advancements she brought to her mother's research. For generations thereafter, House Nuvelle stood at the forefront of magical progress.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Constance, Scion of Nuvelle (Crimson Flower)
After officially becoming the new Duke Aegir, Ferdinand found that he had a new neighbor in Constance, whose revived noble house was granted the old Hrym territory for its domain. It was a prescient move by Emperor Edelgard, as Ferdinand and Constance were quick to marry and merge their adjoining territories. The couple's diverse talents helped them overcome countless obstacles together, in pursuit of a restored land and a new social order for the Empire.
Mercedes, Benevolent Soul & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate/Scion of Nuvelle
After the war, Constance and Mercedes traveled together to the school of sorcery in Fhirdiad. There, they immersed themselves in magical research and, with the help of their friends and all the school's resources, made one astounding discovery after another. Their considerable achievements led to the revitalization of both House Nuvelle and House Martritz. The pair grew increasingly close over the years so that, as time wore on, they became less like friends and more like family. It is said that, years later, each began to speak of the other as if she were a dear sister.
Jeritza, Bloodstained Demon & Constance, Scion of Nuvelle
After the war, Jeritza and Constance joined the battle against those who slither in the dark. In that dire struggle, which raged across the continent, Constance earned her noble title with powerful magic that proved essential to victory. Her rise in status ruffled more than a few feathers, but Jeritza kept the Imperial nobility in line. It is said, in the ballads composed about the couple, that they swore their wedding vows in the beautiful rose garden they had planted together on the Nuvelle estate.
Yuri, Underground Lord & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate/Scion of Nuvelle
After the war, Constance devoted herself to her magical research. Her unorthodox methods allowed her to make great strides, which earned her acclaim and eventually enabled her to restore her noble house. Afterward, almost as if to spite her detractors, she married Yuri. The pair made a happy, if unconventional, couple, as the husband frequently ventured away for months on end. In the long years of their marriage, however, Constance laughed off any concerns—she was known to say that Yuri always knew how to find his way home. Many decades later, he passed away in bed alongside his beloved wife.
Balthus, King of Grappling & Constance, Sorcery Incarnate (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
For her service in war, and her innovations in magic, Constance von Nuvelle was among the first to receive peerage in the new Fódlan. The very next day, she and Balthus were wed, and the couple set about the restoration of House Nuvelle. For their domain, they claimed not the land once ruled by that house, but rather an area in the east of Leicester that encompassed Kupala. There, they became known as advocates for the mountain folk, and as nobles who lived moment to moment as outlandishly as they pleased.
Balthus, King of Grappling & Constance, Scion of Nuvelle (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Balthus and Constance joined the battle against those who slither in the dark. The devastation they wrought in Shambhala was immortalized in a tapestry, entitled "Avatars of War," which preserved their legacy for generations. Afterward, the two were married. Constance was among the first to receive peerage from Emperor Edelgard, and though Balthus sometimes chafed from being at the mercy of his wife's whims, the couple worked diligently to solidify the new social order under Imperial rule. House Nuvelle was given no guarantee of continued power on a hereditary basis but nevertheless achieved lasting status as a leader in the magical arts.
Constance, Sorcery Incarnate/Scion of Nuvelle & Hapi, Freed Spirit
Once all the fighting was over, Hapi and Constance set out together on a journey across Fódlan. They toured the land as they liked, watching it come together in the aftermath of war. They helped in the rebuilding effort here and there with magic and even the occasional sigh. When their wanderings were done, they returned to Garreg Mach, to which they also lent their restorative talents, both above and below the ground. It is said that they remained lifelong friends, steadfast through thick and thin forever after.

Trivia
- In Fire Emblem Heroes, Constance's battle sprite depicts her carrying a parasol with her at all times during battle. This is likely done to accomidate for the fact that gameplay limitations in said game do not support her shifting personality when exposed to sunlight on certain maps.
