Vyland (Japanese: ビラクBiraku) is a member of the Aurelis knights. During most of the War of Shadows, he was one of the knights serving under Prince Hardin, working to combat the Macedon occupation force and to protect Princess Nyna. Afterward, he was one of the founding members of the Wolfguard. He was fiercely loyal to Hardin even in his descent into tyranny, and as such helped the Wolfguard to obstruct Marth's path to Pales near the climax of the War of Heroes.
Vyland was a member of Hardin's four-strong squad of knights in the resistance against Macedon, forced into a mountain fortress after the castle had been claimed by Macedonian forces. Upon the arrival of Marth in Aurelis, Vyland, Hardin and the other Aurelis knights rode to accompany them in the battle to reclaim the Aurelis castle, and from there fought in the united Altea–Aurelis–Archanea army for the rest of the War of Shadows.
In Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, promotion gains consist on giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base stats. If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class's base stats, they will not receive any bonus.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Vyland is one of many Cavaliers in the game, and on the chapter he joins, you get 4 other horse-mounted characters; out of all the horse-mounted characters, he is by far the worst of all of them. Vyland's bases in every stat are equal or inferior to those of the other cavaliers—Abel, Cain, Matthis, Roshea, and Hardin—who join in the same chapter or earlier, and worse than the pre-promoted Paladins: Jagen, Midia, and Arran; his growths are equal or inferior to every Cavalier and Paladin barring Jagen with two exceptions: his speed growth is 10% higher than Roshea's, and his weapon level growth of 70% ties with Abel's, Matthis's, and Hardin's. Any of the units listed above are much better than Vyland, joining earlier or stronger, so Vyland should only be used if you have lost a significant number of cavalry units and you want to replace them with another one. Despite being inferior to every other unit of his class, Vyland is still usable—due to being a Cavalier, he has high movement, allowing him to move and attack an enemy from outside its range, and access to swords allows him to double most units using heavier weapons; additionally, Vyland has the weapon level to use Javelins, allowing him to attack from 2-range and avoid retaliation.

In Mystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.
Book 2
Role
Late in theWar of Heroes, Vyland and the Wolfguard were travelling south to Pales to bolster Emperor Hardin's forces against the approaching Altean army led by Prince Marth. Their path took them through the central mountains, where they crossed paths with the Altean army and ambushed it. He is either killed in the ensuing conflict or, should the player visit the village, he stands down along with the rest of the Aurelian forces upon the command of the King of Aurelis.

Vyland joins at the start of Chapter 5 with very low base stats, but passable defense and HP stats. His speed is low enough that he can be doubled and one-rounded in higher difficulties, while his low strength and skill make his offense unimpressive as well. With only an E rank in swords and a D rank in lances, the best weapons Vyland can wield are Steel Lances and Javelins, denying him access to effective weapons such as the Ridersbane without investment. He joins underleveled—only at level 1—and his growth rates are mediocre, making it difficult to turn him into a good combat unit. Since he is far away from promotion, he cannot boost his very poor base stats and low weapon ranks.
As in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, late in theWar of Heroes, Vyland and the Wolfguard were travelling south to Pales to bolster Emperor Hardin's forces against the approaching Altean army led by Prince Marth. Their path took them through the central mountains, where they crossed paths with the Altean army and ambushed it. If commanded to stand down by the King of Aurelis, the Wolfguard retreat, but return as reinforcements for Archanea during the battle of Pales; from here, Vyland can be convinced by Roshea to defect from Archanea and ally with Marth's forces.
