We swore to live and die together, didn't we? Or was that whole oath just part of some kids' game? I've spent all these years with those words etched into my mind—and I chose to believe in them.
— Asbel

Asbel (Japanese: アスベル Asvel) is a young mage from the Free City of Hrest in the Munster District, a member of the Magi, an apprentice to the group's leader, Prince Ced of Silesse, and a childhood friend of Leif.

Biography

In Grann 773, when Leif came to Hrest to hide from the Empire, Asbel befriended him. Leif and Asbel later moved to the city of Tarrah. After Leif left Tarrah, Asbel went to search for him[1]. Two years later, Asbel came to Munster, where he joined the Magi.[2].

When the Magi broke into the Munster Castle dungeon during Leif's tenure there, Asbel accompanied Ced into the dungeon bowels to search for captured children. Ced tasked Asbel with finding Leif and aiding him in his escape from Munster and rebellion against the Grannvale Empire's hold on the Munster District.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Asbel's base stats are not impressive. His speed is solid, but his other bases are mediocre. 0 defense with a meager growth requires Asbel to be protected from enemies at first. He has a C-rank in wind magic, but his fire and thunder magic are both E-rank. That said, Asbel seldom needs to use a weapon other than his personal tome—Grafcalibur, although it can't be overused or it will break, with only 40 uses and at least two or three of them consumed due to his start as an NPC, so giving him any Fire and Thunder tomes that Lifis has stolen from enemy mages is a good idea, leaving Grafcalibur for the strongest opponents.

The Grafcalibur is Asbel's chief selling point. With a massive 13 might, it hits very hard. It is effective against fliers, making it a useful tool against wyvern riders and pegasus knights. 3 weight ensures Asbel can double with it after gaining some levels. The weapon is incredibly accurate with 100 hit, even against bosses on thrones. 40 crit is the cherry on top, guaranteeing a critical hit on Asbel's second attack, since he has an FCM of 3.

Overall, the Grafcalibur is among the best weapons in Thracia, and Asbel has exclusive access to it. While wielding the Grafcalibur, he is the player's best answer to bosses for most of the game. Most bosses in Thracia stand on gates or thrones, which grant +30 avoid and +10 defense, but no magic. Physical weapons struggle to damage them with that bonus, but Asbel avoids the problem thanks to dealing magic damage. Asbel will also be very accurate thanks to Grafcalibur's 100 hit, and he is guaranteed to crit on follow-up attacks thanks to the tome's high crit.

Asbel has a few other cards up his sleeve. He has an action star, giving him a 5% chance to move again after completing a turn. He also has Adept, allowing him to attack twice in a row if it activates. It triggers based on attack speed, and speed is Asbel's highest growth, so he will eventually have a decent activation rate.

Asbel is one of the best candidates for an early promotion, as he gets massive stat gains: +5 magic, +5 skill, +6 speed, +4 defense, and +1 movement. This brings his offensive stats up to the point where he will be able to reliably one-round bosses with Grafcalibur and one-round most enemies with standard tomes. He also gains access to D staves, which allows him to heal other units if necessary.

Asbel is a great user of resources, arguably the best user of resources among early-game units. The Ced Scroll obtained in Chapter 4x is excellent for Asbel, since it increases speed growth by 30% and magic growth by 10%. It decreases HP growth by 10%, but it is still a sensible tradeoff. With the scroll equipped, Asbel's speed growth is 105%, so he is guaranteed to level up speed. He only needs 7 speed level ups to hit 14 speed, at which point he will automatically cap it with a promotion. All Crusader Scrolls prevent their wielders from taking critical hits, so the scroll also improves Asbel's survivability a little.

Asbel can also use stat boosters to improve his survivability. One aspect of Asbel that never goes away is his frailty. To mitigate this flaw, the player can have Asbel use the two available Life Rings as soon as he joins. He may also use Shield Rings. That said, since Asbel's defense base and growth are dreadful, the latter hardly improve his durability. He also appreciates the chapter 5 Magic Ring, as his base and growth are both mediocre.

Personality

Asbel is highly fond of and close to Leif, and the two had once vowed to work together to liberate Thracia before Leif's disappearance from Tarrah.[3] When Leif disappeared, Asbel was determined to find him again, dedicating three years to his search and never giving up. Asbel is similarly determined to free the Thracian Peninsula from Grannvale, willing to risk his own life and endure any hardship if it means Thracia's freedom.[4]

Endings

Thracia 776

Asbel, Windswept Youth
Asbel fought alongside Leif for the entirety of the war, serving as his trusted aide and confidant. For each step Leif took down that harsh road, Asbel was always beside him, helping him shoulder the war's burdens. Afterward, he returned to his hometown of Hrest, where he became a priest, as his father was before him. In only a few short years, tales of Asbel the Sage had spread to every corner of the land.

Asbel is a Hero from the free city of Hrest, located on the Thracian peninsula. He's an up-and-coming mage who can wield a powerful wind tome! Asbel first encountered Prince Leif of Leonster as a young child. Together, they swore that they would one day free northern Thracia from the grasp of the Grannvale Empire. After their meeting, Asbel studied magic under the tutelage of Ced, who gave him the wind tome of Grafcalibur. Having gained the strength to fight, he then joined the army Leif raised to defeat Grannvale. And so, Asbel continues to fight at Leif's side to honor the pledge they made all those years ago—as allies united by a lifelong bond of friendship!
