“ | I don't want to sit idly by and wait for you to return from battle. I want to be a great knight, just like you. | ” | — Gwendolyn to Bors. |
---|
Gwendolyn (Japanese: ウェンディ Wendy) is a playable character first appearing in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. She is a proud newly-knighted[1] knight of Ostia and the younger sister of Bors.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Gwendolyn, alongside Barthe, is one of the first Knights recruited after Bors in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. She appears in Ostia keep during Chapter 8: Reunion, with Ogier and Barthe searching for their charge, Lilina. After her initial appearance Gwendolyn has no primary story role for the rest of The Binding Blade.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gwendolyn (who will be referred to as "Wendy" for short)... is not what one would call a good unit. While this analysis mainly talks about her Normal Mode performance, note that Wendy is even worse on Hard Mode especially due to not having any hard mode bonuses.
Apparently, Wendy was knighted only one day before the events of Chapter 8, and her bases reflect that nicely. 4 Strength. 3 Skill. 3 Speed. What amazing stats! Wendy reached never explored-before heights by even sucking in the one stat Armor Knights usually specialize in, with an outstanding 8 defense! Not only does Wendy do little to no damage to most enemies, but she also gets one-rounded easily by any Fighter with 7 or more AS. Truly, one can really see how good a unit Wendy is just by looking at her bases, but it doesn't stop there.
Some claim that Wendy's growths are good and can make her good. While this isn't a very constructive argument since you can't even take advantages of these growths easily if you can't actually survive a round of battle, even then, her growths aren't that good, and definitely not enough to let her catch up to your other, better units, especially with the terrible bases she has. Admittedly, her speed growth of 40% is unusually high for an armor knight, so if you do plan to use Wendy long-term, you will encounter a decent number of speed level-ups. Although her defense growth is nothing worth nothing at 30%. It makes one question wether Wendy really is an Armor Knight or not.
Lastly, on top of all that, even if her stats were better, Wendy is still an Armor Knight, a class with low movement, slowing your entire army down. All in all, Wendy is just pretty bad.
However, credit must be given where credit is due. For what it's worth, even with Wendy's growths and bases not correctly complementing each other, she still has terrific promotion bonuses (4 strength, 4 speed, 3 defense) that can actually give her quite a boost, especially if her growths have had some time to kick in (and considering you will mostly give her the second knight's crest you get in the game if you use her, at chapter 15/16, then yes, she theoretically would have levelled up enough if you have been using her frequently), which is honestly something of a redeeming factor. Not only that, but she also has a respectable consitution stat of 10, which actually allows her to pick up the unpromoted cavaliers barring Noah, and even Melady, if for whatever reason you need to rescue them and she happens to be avaiable.
Overall, Wendy, while definitely one of the worst units in the game, is still an interesting one, and a unit that many people (understandably) find fun to use. If one really commits themselves to using Wendy, they will either receive a bad pay-off that they expect at worse, or an amusing killing machine at best, although the latter requires one to shed blood, tears and sweat while there are units out there who are just good from the get-go.

Gwendolyn was one of the first characters confirmed to be playable in the game among the first gameplay footage released publiclly, and as such is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch. Only one variation of Gwendolyn is currently available in Heroes, based on her The Binding Blade incarnation.

Personality and character
Gwendolyn is resolute on her path as a knight of Ostia, even in the face of some resistance from her brother, Bors, who is concerned with her safety. While Gwendolyn is a full fledged knight, she still has some slight insecurity about her prowess, as she seeks advice from Barthe, while Barthe insists that as a full knight she should be able to self-critique effectively.[2] Gwendolyn's dedication to her knighthood has resulted in her having yet to seek out suitors, though she is not particularly concerned with such matters.[3]
Gwendolyn attends her task of protecting Lilina dutifully,[4] and is concerned when Lilina speaks to her on equal terms. She outright rejects Lilina's offer of friendship to preserve the vassal-liege hierarchy.[5]

Trivia
- "Gwendolyn" exceeds Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade's name space limits in several menus. This is only a problem for fan translations, as The Binding Blade was never localized, and Gwendolyn's first localized appearance is in Fire Emblem Heroes.
- The way Gwendolyn's name exceeds space limits is due to its overall width, not number of characters; Priscilla from the game's prequel has the same number of characters (nine) as Gwendolyn, but her name is thinner overall due to a number of the letters in her name not occuping as much width as Gwendolyn's name would.
- Gwendolyn placed 28th in the official Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade character poll on the official Japanese website.[6]
