Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Mae, like Boey, acts as one of Celica's personal guards on her journey to the Temple of Mila, with her role being expanded upon greatly in comparison to Fire Emblem Gaiden. Throughout their journey, Mae acts as a sort of confidant to Celica. During the events of Act Four, Celica makes her intention of sacrificing herself known, and Mae quickly objects to this. After, Mae and the rest of Celica's party are warped away by Jedah, being forced to fight their way through Terrors. Mae, alongside the rest of the previously-lost party, reunites with Celica immediately before the final fight of Act Five, having been guided to her by the voice of Mila.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Mae is available in Celica's army from the start of Celica's route. Her defensive stats are dreadful and she requires constant protection, especially on higher difficulties. However, Mae's offensive power is remarkable. She starts with access to Thunder, which is a better offensive spell than Boey's Fire. She learns Aura at level 9 and Seraphim at level 14, both great offensive spells. This allows Mae to deal great amounts of damage throughout the game, and she is especially useful in the early game as someone who weakens enemies from a distance. Without the player investing resources into Boey, Mae's offense will be consistently superior to his thanks to these advantages.
After promotion, Mae gains access to swords, Recover, and at level 6, Silence. Swords will seldom be useful, since Mae is too frail to survive most enemy attacks, so she generally should not enter combat at 1-range. One exception is when she fights Witches, since they have low defense - using a sword is preferable. Recover has situational usage as a powerful healing spell, but Celica and Genny are both in the same army as Mae and can both heal, so Mae will rarely end up doing it. By far the most useful of the three is Silence, which can be used on enemy Arcanists and Cantors to prevent them from doing any harm to the player's army. In Practice, Mae has exclusive access to the Silence spell; Deen can learn it as a Sage, but he is much better in physical classes, and Shade has it at base level, but she is a DLC unit.
Mae's main issues involve her pitiful defenses and her late promotion level. Her low defenses can be mitigated to some degree by equipping the Leather Shield, but the other issue is not so easy to fix. Mae requires level 14 to promote, which is very late in comparison to other units. Even Boey, whose promotion requires a high level, can promote at level 12 instead. Mae can also find it difficult to gain experience because of her low movement, which will remain a problem for her forever. For these reasons, many players end up using Mae mostly in the early game, when her offensive contributions are the most appreciated, and then relying on her much less later on. Mae can still contribute later in the game, primarily because she learns Seraphim, which is an excellent offensive spell against late-game enemies; that said, her competition at the time is stronger.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
Mae is one of the characters added to the game in the Rite of Shadows update, and became available for summoning by players on May 15, 2017. Only one variation of Mae is currently available in Heroes, based on her Echoes: Shadows of Valentia incarnation.

Personality and character
Mae is an upbeat and energetic girl who is implied to be Celica's closest friend from the priory. Despite their difference in background, with Celica being royalty and Mae being a commoner, Mae is completely relaxed and casual around Celica, calling her by name as opposed to Boey's more formal "milady." Both Mae and Celica share a close relationship, with each acting as a confidant for the other. During her final base conversation, Mae mentions to Celica that she's always there for her if Celica needs to get something off her chest. Likewise, in their support conversations, Mae confides in Celica her self-image issues. She worried that her personality might make her seem childish instead of womanly. In particular, she worries that Boey doesn't see her as a woman (though she doesn't confirm who she's talking about to Celica herself). Celica's opinion clearly matters to Mae, as she becomes at ease when Celica reassures her.
In her C Support with Boey, she mentions that she'd never thought she'd see combat, despite knowing that it was always a possibility if it meant protecting Celica. This once more showcases her more positive and optimistic nature, while also not compromising her duties to Celica. Mae is also shown to be slightly scatterbrained at times, as shown when discussing how the Masked Knight's personality seems to shift depending on whether or not he's wearing the mask, only for Boey to point out that that's the point of the disguise in the first place.
Mae's relationship with Boey is founded on rivalry, though it eventually blossoms into mutual romance. Mae is quick to remind Boey of his faults when he boasts, such as his fear of Terrors or his initial lack of magical aptitude, and often teases him throughout the story. In their A Support, the two of them come to realize their mutual feelings for one another, and in the epilogue it's revealed that the two got married and had many children at some point in time after the events of the game.

If Boey survived
Mae returned to Novis and resumed her work at the priory with Boey. The two bickered endlessly before—and after—their wedding, while managing to raise many children during the pauses between barbs. Both of them often remarked that they couldn't possibly be happier.
If Boey died
After the loss of her verbal sparring partner, Boey, Mae fell into a deep depression—but the encouragement of her friends eventually helped light return to her life. She spent her days helping others at the priory, where she was beloved for her kindness and wicked humor.

Mae has a minor role in the Gaiden manga. When waiting out a sandstorm on their way to the Mila Temple she tells Saber to stop teasing Celica about her feelings for Alm.
