Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This map is a brutal slog. Palla will be your salvation. The horde of Archers and Snipers looks scary, but only four of them (the ones with actual bows) can do anything worse than chip Palla, and even they don't do too much. Your own bowmen will prove valuable as you make your way towards the stronghold to clear it out. Be aware that unlike most games, Mages don't get unrestricted movement in the desert here.

Sadly, Grieth likes to spit out Brigands on the world map, and one usually ends up mugging you after you loot the Desert Stronghold. You will also likely be jumped by some Rigelians on the way out of the desert.

After this battle, you have a decision to make - whether to recruit Deen and kill Sonya or vice versa. Most people will recommend recruiting Deen, and it's easy to see why - his combat stats are far superior, allowing him to contribute more in efficient play. For reasons to pick Sonya, she has slightly more storyline relevance, is the only one who can support Genny, grants you a free Steel Shield, and has some rare spells (Rewarp and Entrap) to give her unique utility in the postgame. Head north to fight Deen and recruit Sonya, or head south to fight Sonya and recruit Deen - the decision is yours. Note that the turn count assumes you recruited Sonya.
