“ | It does not matter what I know or think. I am a knight; I have a duty to fight for my motherland's glory till the very end. | ” | — Camus, to Marth and Nyna |
---|
Camus (Japanese: カミュ Camus), later known by the alternate identities Zeke and Sirius, is a knight originating from Grust. At the time of the War of Shadows, he was the leader of the Sable Order, and according to Marth was reputed across Archanea as "the most able warrior alive". During the war, he served Medeus and Dolhr despite his personal misgivings, and was responsible for allowing Princess Nyna to escape Dolhr's captivity. He refused to betray his liege even to the end, ultimately vanishing in battle against Marth.
In the following years Camus re-emerged in Valentia, now known as Zeke. He served King Rudolf of Rigel until encountering Alm, joining the latter's army by request of his king during the war with Zofia. At the war's conclusion he briefly left to return to Archanea to fulfill one final task for his old life, assuming the identity of the masked knight Sirius.
Biography
Knight of Grust
When the War of Shadows commenced, Grust's cowardly King Ludwik was quick to join forces with Dolhr, an alliance with which Camus complied despite his personal objection to Medeus's actions. His view was that, as a knight, he had no right to question his king's actions and was required to comply no matter what happens.[1] Camus and the Grustian army played a significant role in the downfall of the Kingdom of Archanea,[2] and near the conclusion of the Dolhr army's siege of the Millennial Palace, he arrived to finish the job. Not wishing to see Archanea decay any further, he arranged with Nyna that he would return in several months to take custody of Nyna and the capital as the leader of the occupation army, in a bid to protect it from crueller governors.
In the intervening two years, Camus successfully protected the capital and Nyna from further damage, during which he and Nyna eventually developed a mutual affection for each other. This finally changed when Medeus grew weary of his tactics and dispatched an army to the capital to apprehend Nyna. In response, Camus resolved to escort Nyna to find refuge with Prince Hardin in Aurelis, but knowing that doing so formally as a Grust knight would jeopardize the life of Prince Yubello, a hostage to Medeus, he and three of his subordinates - Belf, Roberto and Leiden - deserted the Grust army. He successfully held off General Brzak's Dolhr army and ensured Nyna's escape to Aurelis, but he himself was captured. For his actions he was imprisoned and barely kept alive for a time; according to Medeus himself, he was the first since Anri to have caused him so much trouble.[3]
Near the tail end of the War of Shadows, Camus was released and reinstated as the leader of Grust's army, and continued to fight in Medeus's service even as King Ludwik was dying of illness. As Prince Marth and the Archanean league marched on Grust and assaulted the Grusthold, seeking to end the threat posed by Grust and the Sable Order, Camus led the defense of the realm in co-operation with fellow general Lorenz. Despite Marth and Nyna's please to convince him to stand down and join them, Camus refused to turn on his liege despite his misgivings about his orders, and was defeated. He disappeared entirely after the battle, widely thought to have been killed in action.
In Valentia
Some time later, he washed up on the shores of Valentia, barely alive and with no memory of his past. He was found by Teeta of Rigel and, now calling himself Zeke, he was taken in as one of the most trusted vassals of its king, Rudolf. Before the start of the war, Rudolf tasked Zeke to, should he encounter a boy with a mark on his arm, join that boy's righteous cause.
With Teeta in Nuibaba's captivity, Zeke was forced into serving alongside the brutal General Jerome at the Rigel Plains. Upon hearing word that Nuibaba had fallen and Teeta had been freed, Zeke and his squad turned on Jerome and assisted Alm in fighting Jerome's men. After the fight, he consulted with Alm at Rigel Village; though he initially refused to assist Alm further out of loyalty to the emperor, upon noticing the cross-shaped birthmark on Alm's right arm he joined Teeta in allying with Alm, citing an order Rudolf gave him to follow a man with such a birthmark for the good of Valentia. After the conclusion of the war, Zeke recovered his old memories and briefly left Teeta and Valentia to fulfill one last task.
The masked knight Sirius
As the War of Heroes was commencing, Zeke travelled back to Archanea, adopting a mask and the identity of "Sirius". His first task was to rescue Yumina and Yubello, the heirs to Grust, whose lives were being threatened by the forces of Archanean Empire under General Lang. At Holm Beach, Sirius found them under the protection of Ogma; Ogma approach him out of suspicion of being in league with the bandits assailing him and the Grustian royals, Yubello and Yumina. Sirius informed him of the approach of Marth's army, then allied with Ogma in defending the children, and the four all joined Marth's new army in opposing the Archanean Empire.
During the war, Sirius was confronted by Belf, a former Sable Knight, who saw through the guise and identified Sirius as Camus, but remained quiet at Sirius's request. At the Dragon's Table, Sirius awoke the captive Nyna from her hypnosis at the hands of Gharnef, again denying his identity as Camus when she recognised him. After Medeus's downfall, he disappeared, presumably returning to Valentia to live with Teeta.

Personality and character
In all of his identities, Camus is a thoroughly honorable man with a very strong sense of justice and kindness, but he considers himself bound by his honor as a knight. He views the role of a knight as that of a servant, unquestioning to his liege, and so attests that no matter how much he may disagree with his orders and tasks, he will carry them out nonetheless.[4] However, he is more than willing to perform minor acts of rebellion to aid those in the right, such as giving Marth a copy of Thoron,[5] and will not tolerate his peers inflicting abuse upon the common people, as evidenced by his turning on Jerome.[6]
Camus appears to place great importance upon the lives of those about whom he cares in any form, and so has proven to be easy to cow into submission through the taking of hostages: during the War of Shadows, he (along with Grust as a whole) was forced to serve Dolhr through the hostage-taking of Yubello,[7] and in the Valentia war, he was forced to fight alongside Jerome while Teeta was held in the captivity of Nuibaba.[8] Conversely, this spurred him onto his greatest acts of rebellion: his devotion to Nyna caused him to spare her life even as Dolhr and Grust demanded her execution, and he actively fought Dolhr's army to escort her to safety with Hardin in Aurelis.[9]
As Sirius, knowing that his return to Archanea was temporary, he kept quiet maintained his distance from all others in Marth's army and continuously denied his true identity, so as to not gain attachments to anyone in the force. He even went as far as to deny his identity to Nyna herself, even after achieving his goal of saving her from Medeus.[10]
