Bruno (Japanese: ブルーノ Bruno), also known as the Mysterious Man, ???, and Zacharias, is an antagonistic character appearing in Fire Emblem Heroes.
Biography
Bruno was born a prince of the Emblian Empire, and was bound by a curse compelling him to fight against the Askran Kingdom. Bruno sought to be freed from this curse by any means necessary. After his mother was imprisoned for sharing imperial secrets with Askr and later died in captivity, he was cast to the border. He entered Askr and assumed the identity of Zacharias, joined the Order of Heroes, befriending Alfonse and Sharena, and taught Sharena how to wield a lance. However, when the curse's effects started to take hold of him again, he seemingly vanished in the World of Awakening during a mission.
During the war between Askr and Embla, Bruno opposes the Order of Heroes while presenting himself as an anonymous masked knight. He ultimately gives the Order intel on his sister Veronica's objectives, but refuses to elaborate on the motivations for his own seemingly self-contradictory actions or Zacharias' fate. He later reveals himself as a prince of Embla and, under his old Zacharias identity, aids the Summoner in escaping the World of Radiance. When next encountered by the Order of Heroes, he has become increasingly erratic and violent, and now claims to have murdered Zacharias. Upon defeating him, the Order deduces that he and Zacharias are indeed one and the same. Bruno explains the nature of the Emblian curse, vows to continue his search to break the curse, asks the Summoner to look after the friends who knew him as Zacharias, and requests that he be killed if he ever makes another attempt on Alfonse or Sharena's lives. Bruno's interactions with the Order throughout the ensuing conflicts with Múspell, Hel, Dökkálfheimr, and Niðavellir are sporadic; he passes intel about how to undo the Rite of Flames to Hríd, rescues Veronica from being sacrificed by Surtr, and entreats Askr's aid in repelling Niðavellir's invasion of Embla.
By the time the goddess Embla renews her efforts to destroy Askr, Bruno is on another journey searching for a cure to his curse, accompanied by Veronica's main lieutenant and friend, Prince Xander of Nohr. He returns to Embla to warn the Order of Heroes when Veronica is captured by Letizia—avaricious leader of Embla's Curse Directive and former member of Embla's royal family—and slated for execution. While the Order distracts Letizia, Bruno spreads rumors of her deceit of the Emblian people and convinces the soldiers to free Veronica. He remains in the Order's company as they subdue Letizia. However, the goddess Embla personally intervenes and possesses Letizia, forcing the Order to kill her. Embla next possesses Bruno and attacks the Order, but the god Askr intervenes and expels her from Bruno's body. Askr dies performing the Rite of Opening, and the Order and Bruno receive the World-Key of Yggdrasill, a fruit that expels Embla from the body when consumed and can kill her. Bruno takes the Key, parts ways with the order, sets up a final plan with Alfonse and Xander, and sets out to confront Embla. However, the Key proves ineffectual, and Embla once again possesses Bruno and forces him to attack the Order. The Order is forced to kill him in self-defense, and he begs Alfonse to look after Veronica before dying.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Bruno: Masked Hare's main claim to fame is his 35 Defense, the highest of any staff cavalier at time of writing. This gives him an interesting niche as a physically bulky healer. His Ovoid Staff pairs well with his default Attack/Defense Push, and having Dazzling Staff in his base kit is always a boon. His biggest issue is the existence of Silque: Selfless Cleric, who has a very similar statline but far better availability as a Heroic Grail unit (and 15 more Resistance). If you have enough copies of him to supermerge him, he's better, but for most players Silque can do his job with a far less demanding Orb investment.

Trivia
- The name "Bruno" also appears in unused data in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, though this is likely coincidental.
- As of the Closing In update, Bruno's base variation is one of only two characters in Heroes whose special skill activation quotes cannot be heard in legitimate gameplay, the other being the base variation of Freyr.
