* Eyvel, Marty, Dagdar and Tanya are temporary: all leave at the end of Chapter 3 and are not rerecruitable due to not being forced. Eyvel cannot be rescued without Sara, who is skipped. Dagdar and Tanya can be skipped by killing or releasing Rumei in Chapter 8, or by having them dead before Chapter 3. Marty becomes an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
* Ronan is inside of a village.
* To skip Safy, the player must not go to Chapter 2x, which can be accomplished by allowing at least one village to be destroyed.
* Even if 2x is visited, if Lifis is killed or released, he cannot be recruited. However, 2x is never visited to begin with.
* Dalsin is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional. As well, if Jubel is never rescued, he is unrecruitable.
* Asbel is an NPC unit whose recruitment is optional. As well, the chapter he is in, 4x, is skippable.

On the path to the good ending, there are 36 total characters recruited in the Binding Blade, albeit not all at once. From Ilia, it is 33, and from Sacae it is 34. List of mutually exclusive playable units
Also known as Arran and Samson archetype units, these are two characters that cannot be recruited into the player's army at the same time. Be it one bans the other, or the chapters they are obtained on are mutually exclusive, or the events that conspire to allow them are mutually exclusive, for one reason or another the player may only obtain one of them at a time.

In Chapter 16, there are two villages that will give each one of the two units. The left village contains Arran, and the right village contains Samson. Although left up to the player's discretion in this game, it is suggested by Book 2 of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem that Marth chose Arran and Samson did not join his army.

If she remains unmarried or deceased by the end of the generation, then the Substitute characters appear where her children would have gone. Substitute characters can coexist in a mix-and-match style with their child counterparts, but cannot coexist with their individual ones. For example, Deimne and Muirne can coexist with Larcei and Scáthach, but not with Lester and Lana. |

If Byleth obtains a C+ support with Edelgard and sees an optional scene after talking to her during Chapter 11, the Crimson Flower Route can be chosen and unlocks Jeritza as a playable unit during Chapter 13. Minimum required units in each game
This lists the number of units that will be inevitably recruited to your team, no matter what happens. To play the game in such a manner is known as minimal, lowest, or fewest recruitment challenges, as the smaller numbers + potential loss of key units makes the games much more difficult.

- Due to the majority of the recruitment in Gaiden and Shadows of Valentia being done by talking to the characters outside of battle, it is possible to skip the recruitment by not talking to them.
- In Gaiden, Gray blocks the exit of Ram village until Alm talk to him and joins his party. Due to a glitch, it is possible to bypass this, by saving and resetting the game after talking to Mycen a second time. NPCs will be in different positions, and now Lukas (or no one if already recruited) will be blocking the entrance, thus making Alm capable of leaving Ram without recruiting any of the villagers. In Shadows of Valentia however, recruiting Gray and Tobin is required to progress.
- In Gaiden, recruiting either Mae or Boey is enough to progress while in Shadows of Valentia, recruiting both is required.
- While recruiting Clair, Clive and Saber is also required to progress in Shadows of Valentia, they are all avoidable in Gaiden.
In total, Gaiden, at 5 (6 if Gray is not counted as skipped) units versus the usual 31, has the smallest required to obtainable ratio.
In total, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, at 12 units versus the usual 33, has one of the smallest required to obtainable ratios.

Thracia 776
- Eyvel, Marty, Dagdar and Tanya are temporary: all leave at the end of Chapter 3 and are not rerecruitable due to not being forced. Eyvel cannot be rescued without Sara, who is skipped. Dagdar and Tanya can be skipped by killing or releasing Rumei in Chapter 8, or by having them dead before Chapter 3. Marty becomes an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Ronan is inside of a village.
- To skip Safy, the player must not go to Chapter 2x, which can be accomplished by allowing at least one village to be destroyed.
- Even if 2x is visited, if Lifis is killed or released, he cannot be recruited. However, 2x is never visited to begin with.
- Dalsin is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional. As well, if Jubel is never rescued, he is unrecruitable.
- Asbel is an NPC unit whose recruitment is optional. As well, the chapter he is in, 4x, is skippable.
- Hicks is inside of an optional village. At that, if Mafy is never rescued or 4x is never visited, he is unrecruitable.
- Shiva is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Fred can be skipped by skipping 11x, which also skips Olwen.
- Salem can be killed or released as an enemy unit.
- If Salem is not recruited, 12x cannot be visited, skipping Perne, Troude and Tina. As well, Lara will never change class to Dancer.
- Homer is inside of an optional village.
- Ralph is an NPC unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Every last one of the route split units and Sara are all optional for one reason or another.
- Xavier is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Neither Conomor or Amalda can be recruited without either Miranda or Sleuf.
- Ced can be skipped by warping Leif onto the seize tile in Chapter 23, or otherwise preventing Ced from arriving in time.
- Galzus is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
Thracia 776 has exactly half the cast as required recruitment. However, when Eyvel, Marty, Dagdar and Tanya are excluded the total becomes 22/52.

- Lugh resides in a village that is completely optional to visit.
- Clarine can be skipped if she never gets to intiate a talk with Roy.
- All enemy recruits (not counting Melady) are avoidable, including...
- Rutger, who is unrecruitable without Clarine.
- For Ilia or the bad ending, Sin, who is unrecruitable without Sue.
- Fir, who is unrecruitable without Noah.
- Gonzalez.
- Raigh.
- Cath.
- Garret.
- Perceval.
- For the bad ending, Zeiss.
- Hugh.
- For the bad ending, Douglas. However, to avoid recruiting him he must be killed before the end of Chapter 16.
- For the Sacae good ending,
- Noah, Trec, and Zelot (bad ending/Sacae good) can be skipped by having them die in Chapter 7 before recruitment, or ignoring them.
- Geese is an NPC unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Bartre and Echidna are both optional NPC units to recruit in their respective chapters.
- In regards to the good ending exclusives...
- Zeiss must be recruited and alive for Chapter 21x.
- Although Juno and Dayan are presented as formally optional, they are required for their respective Chapters 20x.
- Zelot is also required for access to the Ilian Chapter 20x.
- To access Sacae, at least Sue is required, and to access Sacaean 20x, Sue and Sin are both required.
- Douglas is forcibly recruited with no player input in Chapter 16x.
- Karel does not exist on the bad ending path, and on the good ending neither Fir nor Bartre are recruited, which is required for his recruitment.
On the path to the good ending, there are 36 total characters recruited in the Binding Blade, albeit not all at once. From Ilia, it is 33, and from Sacae it is 34. On the path to the bad ending, regardless of route, there are 29 units available, all out of the usual 54.
Of note, in the bad ending path, Sacae will inevitably be passed over for Ilia as neither Sue nor Sin are recruited while Shanna is unavoidably recruited at the beginning. As well, it is impossible to obtain Aureola as that requires Douglas by association.

- Dorcas is an enemy unit whose recruitment is optional.
- Erk and Serra are NPC units whose recruitments are optional.
- Main Story (Both)
For sorting purposes, this list will be based on Eliwood Mode, as neither Farina nor Karla are recruitable anyway.
- The following are optional as a result of being enemy recruitments:
- Guy
- Raven, who is impossible to recruit to begin with as Priscilla is skipped
- Legault
- Heath
- Geitz, if you went to his map in the first place let alone were able to recruit him without Dart
- Harken, if he spawns to begin with
- Vaida
- The following are optional as a result of being NPC units who do not automatically join at the end of the chapter:
- Erk
- Lucius
- Fiora
- Rath
- Farina
- Karel
- Karla, among other things
- Try as one might, Merlinus is impossible to skip as he'll join anyway if his sidequest is passed up and his defeat in said sidequest is a game over condition.
- Priscilla normally joins automatically even if her village is skipped, but by letting the brigands or pirates destroy her village, or letting Erk be defeated, this is skipped.
- Dart normally joins automatically, but can be skipped by defeating him in The Port of Badon.
- Hawkeye normally joins automatically even if he is not recruited, but if he is defeated this does not occur.
- The recruitment criteria of Karla is so specific and obscure that not meeting them is far easier.
