Turning Traitor/Script
As Ephraim marches to the capital of Grado, a messenger comes bearing news of Eirika; an uprising in Carcino put Innes in danger, and Eirika traveled to assist him. Ephraim reasons that the best way to help Eirika is to end the war by defeating Grado. Then, a minor earthquake occurs; Seth informs Ephraim that such quakes are common in Grado, and Ephraim remembers a similar quake when he first visited Grado.
At Bethroen, Selena catches up to Duessel; when he expresses reluctance to fight Ephraim, she informs him that he has been accused of treason and prepares to execute him. Duessel resists, and Selena instructs Cormag to drive them into the sea, though Cormag is reluctant to Fight Duessel.
As the battle starts, Valter arrives and relieves Selena of duty; he tells her Emperor Vigarde no longer finds her trustworthy enough to deal with Duessel. Selena departs for the capital to verify his claims, and Valter instates Beran to defeat Duessel and Ephraim. Cormag considers whether or not to attack Duessel, but eventually convinces himself to move out and fight.
During the Battle, Ephraim can talk to Duessel. Ephraim asks Duessel to go with him, but Duessel is reluctant, having served Grado his whole life, now branded a traitor; Ephraim convinces Duessel that living as a traitor will do Grado more good than accepting death, and Duessel agrees to go with him. Additionally, Duessel or Tana can speak with Cormag. Duessel accepts Cormag's judgement as a knight sent to kill him, but Cormag cannot believe Duessel is a traitor at heart and joins him. Alternately, Tana gets Cormag to stop fighting, and attempts to understand why he is fighting Duessel; Cormag is frustrated by her refusal to leave him, but is convinced to speak with Duessel by her continued insistence.
If Beran is not defeated, after some time passes, he decides to flee, fearing Valter's anger at his failure to defeat Duessel or Ephraim. Duessel and Ephraim then reconvene, and Ephraim asks why Vigarde started the war. Duessel states that Vigarde changed significantly when Lyon created something he called the "Dark Stone", which he claimed to be more powerful than the Sacred Stones. Myrrh states that the dark power she felt may be able to corrupt people, and Duessel states that Lyon has the Dark Stone in the capital. Duessel insists on accompanying Ephraim to the capital, in spite of fighting his countryman. If Duessel's ally NPCs survived, they ask to accompany the Frelian Army to aid Duessel.
Seth informs Ephraim that a ship is being readied for them, and Ephraim orders his men to rest while they wait. Then, L'Arachel approaches Ephraim; L'Arachel informs him that a "phantom ship" is roaming the waters, scaring off sailors. L'Arachel then leaves with her retainers to find and defeat the phantom ship. Once she leaves, Ephraim's ship arrives, and his army prepares to set sail.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |

Obtaining the Knight Crest at the end of the chapter requires that all of Duessel's units survive. As such, deploying mounted units to handle the pirates southward is highly recommended. Being a survival chapter, it is not required to kill Beran, and one may want to obtain the horseslayer, killing edge, and even the secret book before doing so if they wish. Cormag will stay away from the battle until turn 4, so speaking with Duessel or even deploying Tana is key to recruiting him.
While it is improbable for Duessel to fall unless poor decisions are made, his defeat will result in a Game Over.
Trivia
- This is the only chapter in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, as well as the Fire Emblem series, to feature Fleets.
- Marisa makes a cameo appearance when visiting the southern village.
- Even if you somehow manage to kill Selena before Valter goes on to send her away right after the end of the player's first turn, she will still appear in Chapter 13.
