Unbroken Heart (Japanese:砕けぬ心 Unbroken Heart) is chapter 5x of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Plot

Main article: Unbroken Heart/Script

After Eirika manages to successfully enter Grado, the narrative temporarily switches focus to her twin brother Ephraim and his exploits within Grado’s borders. Valter, having been tasked with the capture of the twins, has decided to focus on capturing Ephraim. In pursuit of this task, Valter visits Renvall where one of his subordinates, Tirado, stands ready to capture the twins. Valter asks for an update on Tirado’s progress with Ephraim’s capture. To Valter’s displeasure, none in the Grado army have manages to capture him. In fact, Ephraim has been soundly defeating any forces they send after him through superior strategy and combat prowess of his small band of Cavaliers. Valter comments that the prince is beginning to whet his appetite and urges Tirado to capture the prince as soon as possible. Tirado assures Valter that he has a plan to draw Ephraim out of hiding and corner him by using the mole within the prince’s ranks.

Meanwhile, in a forest near Renvall, Ephraim is debating his options with his comrades Kyle and Forde. Their supplies are running low and their weapons are in poor shape. Forde suggests they restock at a nearby village, but Ephraim quickly rejects the idea as it could lead to innocent citizens of Grado being punished for their generosity. Considering their precarious situation, the group reviews their information and goal. Since they have been behind enemy lines for so long, they have yet to hear that the capital has fallen or of Fado’s death, thus, Ephraim decides that they should focus on harrying Grado’s forces to give Eirika and Fado time to escape the capital. Just as Ephraim says this, Orson returns from the scouting mission given to him and reports that Grado’s forces are closing in on their location. Forde recommends that they retreat to Renais castle, however, Ephraim refuses and declares that they will take Renvall. As they ride to Renvall, Forde expresses doubt that they could seize a small fort with such small numbers, but Ephraim assures the cavalier that this is not a thoughtless decision. Ephraim believes that if Grado loses Renvall, they will spend many valuable soldiers to take it back, thus temporarily hindering the imperial army. Additionally, the enemy is expecting Ephraim to apply his standard guerilla tactics as opposed to attacking a castle, which means that the castle is likely undermanned. Ephraim’s explanation proves sufficient in persuading Forde, and the group enters the castle. Just before they begin their assault on Renvall, Ephraim reminds Orson to not push himself too hard so as to not exacerbate the wounds he received in the previous battle and cause them to lose.

After Ephraim seizes the throne, Kyle commends the prince on his tactical insight and battle prowess; however, Ephraim does not waste a second revelling in his victory. Ephraim knows that he will not be able to hold Renvall in a siege with such a small force, prompting him to command his troops to make for Grado Keep immediately. Before the group manages to escape the castle, Forde reports to Ephraim that during their attack on Renvall, the enemy surrounded the castle. Despite being surrounded, Ephraim charges outside in hopes of breaking through Grado’s troops before they end up in an unwinnable situation. As Ephraim and his allies exit the castle, they are quickly surrounded. Valter approaches Ephraim and begins to taunt the prince. Valter informs Ephraim that Renais’ capital has fallen, though Ephraim believes that Valter is merely goading him into giving up and rejects his words. Ephraim asks how Valter knew he would attack Renvall. Valter coyly responds that he will find out in due time and demands the prince and his forces surrender. To Valter’s surprise, Ephraim takes a battle stance and asserts that he will not be stopped by him. Kyle and Forde join their liege at his side and the three begin to fight their way through Valter’s forces.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Spoiler alert: Orson is a traitor. He leaves at the end of the chapter, so don't let him hold anything you don't want to lose.

Note: If Forde or Kyle are defeated in this chapter, they will still appear in Chapter 8 and be usable throughout the rest of the game.

This chapter can take many turns, especially if the player desires to acquire all items in chests. You only have four units to use, so don't panic if it takes you a long time to complete (Tactics rating is no longer a function in this game).

At the start, trade Orson's Silver Sword over to one of your other three units (if you want to have the sword). Keep his Steel Lance in case Forde, Kyle, or Ephraim are having difficulty during the chapter.

Use Forde and Kyle to take out enemy units while traveling north, keeping Ephraim and Orson behind (if the player does NOT want any of the chest items, Ephraim and Orson should follow behind the cavaliers) to grab chest items. Afterward, head east and have the group meet up there. The path splits at this point, so be aware that enemies will be coming from both sides. Since turn count doesn't have any effect on the game, you can either remain idle and defend (station units at the front of each flank) or charge down the enemies. At this point, you should have traded Orson's Steel Lance to Forde or Ephraim (preferably Forde, as the Javelin is likely almost broken, and the Steel Lance deals much more damage). Take out all enemies on both sides (Forde and Ephraim on the right side, Orson and Kyle on the left is a good method to use)

After ALL enemy units (except the boss) on BOTH sides have been taken out (if either Forde or Kyle retreats, use Orson, as it will not impact the game significantly), regroup near the throne. You can take out the boss with any unit (Forde or Kyle with Javelin can easily weaken Zonta); however, Orson should not be used to kill him, as this wastes EXP. Ephraim can easily take out the boss with Reginleif (use Forde's Javelin first for best results).

Trivia

  • This chapter is the only sidequest in The Sacred Stones, and there are no requirements in order to reach it.
