Durandal

Durandal (Japanese: デュランダル Durandal), also known as the Blazing Blade or sword of sacred fire (Japanese: 烈火の剣 Sword of Flame), is a regalia sword introduced in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. It is one of the eight legendary weapons of Elibe, forged to combat dragons late in the Scouring, and was the chosen weapon of Roland the Little Knight of the Eight Legends.
History
At the height of the Scouring, Durandal was forged alongside the other Elibean legendary weapons, and was entrusted to Roland. Legend has it that after the war, Roland took the blade to his hometown, Ostia, and when he held it aloft, the scarred and barren war-torn land was suddenly rejuvenated with plants springing back to life.[1] At some point afterward, Roland sealed it away after the war in a lava cavern in the mountains of what would eventually become Ostia, under the vigilant watch of the lingering spirits of Georg and other warriors formerly in his service; as with all of the legendary weapons, it was then placed under a strong seal inhibiting its use by Bramimond.
980 years after the Scouring, at the persuasion of Athos, Bramimond released the seal on the legendary weapons to permit Eliwood, Hector and Lyn to use them to defeat Nergal. The group travelled to Durandal's resting place, where Eliwood conquered the guardian souls and Athos conferred with the soul of Roland, who allowed his distant descendant Eliwood to claim the sword. Immediately after leaving the cave, the group was beset upon by an Ice Dragon seemingly appearing out of nowhere; the blade guided Eliwood's body and used him to use it to slay the dragon, which as it died revealed itself to be Ninian. Severely shaken at having killed Ninian, Eliwood returned the blade to Athos for a while, feeling unable to wield it after his actions. Athos gave it back to him for the final fight with Nergal, and Eliwood used it in that fight and against a dragon summoned by Nergal. Afterward, Durandal was returned to its resting place in Ostia.
Twenty years later, after suppressing Legance's insurrection, Eliwood's son Roy was led to Durandal's cavern by Lilina, to claim the sword themselves before Bern's army could. The group arrived to find the cavern already claimed by a bandit group led by Henning which did not appear to be aware of Durandal's presence in the cave. Roy's group eliminated the bandit infestation and claimed Durandal for themselves, using it against Bern's forces and the War Dragons found therein in the Disturbance of Bern.

Trivia
- In The Blazing Blade, the weapon's weight was increased, making it the heaviest sword in the game.
- In the two pre-release builds of The Blazing Blade, Durandal featured a much shorter blade in Eliwood's battle animations featuring it. Lyn also had a unique battle animation wielding Durandal, although she is still locked out from using it and hacking is required to see it.
