— Chrom, about to find out that the Anna in this chapter is not the same person that appeared in paralogue 2
|
Anna the Merchant is the fourth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. In this chapter, the Shepherds come to the aid of a secret seller who wandered right into a bandits' hideout; the leader of the bandits is looking to sell her to slavers, hoping to build either a grave or a home for his twin brother (depending on choices the player has made up to this point in time).
Plot
- Main article: Anna the Merchant/Script
Chrom and a male merchant are talking when the merchant talks about "that poor girl". Chrom asks what is wrong; the merchant asks the Shepherds to help a young merchant girl being set upon by bandits. Chrom states that they're on their way. Battle preparations take place at this point; what happens right after battle preparations finish depends on whether or not the player has already completed paralogue 2.
If the player has already completed paralogue 2, Vincent calls out to the young merchant girl, Anna; Vincent tells Anna that the two of them have business to settle, and Vincent aims to settle the debt--Victor will be avenged that day. Anna asks Vincent if the two have met; Vincent tells Anna that playing dumb won't save her, and that the gold she nets from the slavers will build Victor the finest grave in the land. Anna tells Vincent to be careful--prices aren't the only thing she can cut in half. If the player has not yet completed paralogue 2, Vincent confronts Anna and reveals what terrible luck for her to wander by that day, but unlucky girls still sell; he reveals that the gold she nets from the slavers will build Victor a fine home (Victor still being alive at this point in time in this situation). Anna tells Vincent to be careful--prices aren't the only thing she can cut in half.
The two paths come together right as the battle begins. Should Chrom speak to Anna, she'll ask if she's being rescued; Chrom reveals that was the plan, but Anna seems to be holding up just fine, and asks her if she can still fight. Anna states she could stand to open up a few more rogues--or locks for that matter; Chrom asks Anna if she's a thief, to which Anna replies she's a locksmith, but either way she'll have any door or chest smiling wide in a trice, and reveals that the bandits appear to have quite a hoard built up. Chrom reveals that he thinks they're in business; the player can now control Anna at this point. The paths again branch off right as the battle ends; again, the criteria for the branch the player follows is whether he/she has completed paralogue 2.
If the player has already completed paralogue 2, Anna thanks Chrom for his help, then introduces herself, also revealing that some folks like to call her the Secret Seller. Chrom states he remembers Anna; Anna states she's drawing a blank. Chrom reveals that he knows he and the Shepherds helped her previously; Anna reveals that Chrom must have met one of her sisters. Chrom is puzzled as to how they look identical. Anna states that there is a strong family resemblance, and that they're all traveling merchants; Chrom asks if they all have the same name, which Anna confirms and reveals is part of the secret. Chrom wonders how holiday feasts must be confusing; Anna confirms but then reveals that the same is true for everyone, then says she can't just send Chrom on his way after helping two of the sisters and asks to come along and help him in return. Anna reveals she's quite useful, and they'll never make a loss with her in tow, which she guarantees. If the player has not yet completed paralogue 2, Anna thanks Chrom for his help, then introduces herself, also revealing that some folks like to call her the Secret Seller. Chrom tells Anna that the roads are dangerous these days and tells her to be careful on her travels; Anna states it's far less dangerous having people like Chrom around and asks Chrom to take her with him. Chrom tells Anna she's probably safer on her own, that they're marching into a war; Anna says that she at least won't be bored if she goes with Chrom, then reveals she's quite useful, and they'll never make a loss with her in tow, which she guarantees.

Character data
Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter is unlocked. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia
- This chapter is one of four paralogue chapters in Awakening that connect only to other paralogue chapters on the world map. The others are paralogues 9, 15, and 20.
- This chapter is the last one of those four that is neither a child paralogue nor a SpotPass paralogue.
