Fire Emblem: Kakusei (ファイアーエムブレム覚醒, Faiaa Emuburemu Kakusei),[3] literally "Fire Emblem: Awakening", is the latest announced Fire Emblem game, being made for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is set to be released in Japan on April 19, 2012,[3] with a release in Europe on a later date in 2012. A standard version with just the game will cost ¥4,800, while a special edition is available for ¥19,800, which includes the game, a special 3DS system, and 1000 points. The game takes place on an as-of-yet unknown continent, featuring Krom, the prince of Iris. [5]
Plot
Kakusei features Krom, the sword-wielding prince of Iris. Little is known about the story specifically; however, an advertisement in Jump magazine includes the following English text:
“ | Two sleeping dragons - one a sacred ally of mankind, the other its sworn destroyer. Two heroes marked with symbols of the dragons. Their meeting heralds the dragons' awakening - and the world's ending. | ” | — Jump advertisement[6] |

Gameplay
- The Free Map system, similar to the world map of Gaiden and The Sacred Stones, allows the player to walk across the map to different locations to battle or shop.
- A new included feature called "dual system" activates when a character attacks an enemy unit and an ally is besides them. This mode powers up the abilities of the attacking unit as well as the ally unit helping with attacks.[6]
- Just as in Shin Monshou no Nazo, the My Unit concept is used again - a customizable main character, representing the player and playing a large part in the story.
- Also returning from the directly previous game is the option to turn of the permanency of character death. This is most likely included to attract newer players.
- Branching promotions return from The Sacred Stones, allowing for further unit customization.
Characters
- Cullum- An armoured knight who serves the vigilante force. He shoulders the vigilantes' defences, but is sorely lacking in presence and isn't noticed even among his fighting peers.[7]
- Donny
- Emelina (エメリナ, Emerina) - Krom and Liz's elder sister, the current ruler and "Holy King" of the Holy Kingdom of Iris. She is said to be a peace-loving and kind-hearted queen.[8]
- Frederick (フレデリク, Furederiku) - A knight serving the Holy Kingdom of Iris. He supports Krom as his deputy in the vigilante force. Calm and collected, Frederick prefers guiding others.[9]
- Gaia (ガイア, Gaia) - A male who wields swords.
- Geriba- Appears to be a bandit boss.
- Krom (クロム, Kuromu) - One of the main heroes of the game. Krom is the prince of the Holy Kingdom of Iris, and a descendant of the Holy King who defeated the Evil Dragon. Although royalty, he serves as captain of the vigilante force to keep his country at peace. He wields his nation's treasured sword, the Binding Blade "Falchion".[10]
- Libera
- Liz (リズ, Rizu) - Krom's sister and the princess of the Holy Kingdom of Iris. She is a member of Krom's vigilante force and a staff-wielding Cleric. Although she appears to be naive of worldly goings-ons and sometimes acts like a spoilt princess, she is kind deep inside.[11]
- Mariabel - A member of the vigilante force and Liz's best friend. She is the child of an influential noble family within Iris. She acts proud and domineering, but is sweet to her friends.[12]
- "Marth" - A swordsman who claims to be the Hero King of ages long past. He wields another Falchion, a blade once thought to be unique, and appears during Krom's hour of need.[13]
- Miriel - A member of the vigilante force. A methodical perfectionist, she is harsh towards those who act thoughtlessly.[14]
- My Unit - Another main hero of the game, whose identity is crafted by the player. At the beginning of the game, My Unit is lying unconscious on the roadside, when they are rescued by Krom's vigilante force. Despite losing their memory, My Unit has great knowledge of fighting battles and serves as the vigilantes' tactician.[15]
- Richt - The youngest member of the vigilante force, he's practically their mascot. He acts and speaks like a child, but dislikes being treated as one. He's fond of Krom.[16]
- Ronku (ロンクー, Ronkuu) - A swordsman from the Kingdom of Feria, located to the north of Iris. His skill with the sword is undeniable, but his skill with women? Forget about it.[17]
- Sariya
- Sairi
- Soiree- A female knight who serves Krom's vigilante force. She prizes combat and has a daring, strong-willed personality.[18]
- Sol- A knight who serves Krom's vigilante force. He has a gentle, trusting personality.[19]
- Sumia (スミア, Sumia) - A member of the vigilante force. She is a klutz and feels that she isn't up to the job because of it. Possesses the mysterious ability to understand the feelings of animals.[20]
- Tiamo
- Vake (ヴェイク, Veiku) - A fighter who serves the vigilante force. He is Krom's childhood friend and the two sort of have a bond between them.[21]
- Velvet
- Viole
Pre-release information
Fire Emblem: Kakusei was announced only briefly on September 13, 2011 at Nintendo's 3DS Conference in Japan, then known only as Fire Emblem 3DS. Two videos were released on the official website. It was noted by IGN staff that its graphics look better than Radiant Dawn for the Wii.[22] In addition, one new feature of the game will be two-on-one battles.[23] The game will feature the return of a world map for traveling between the different towns and purchasing items, something that has not appeared since The Sacred Stones.
According to the Japanese Nikkei newspaper, Kakusei will be the first Nintendo game to offer paid downloadable content, allowing the purchase of additional content through credit cards or prepaid cards, each for several hundred yen.[24][25]
A third trailer was released during the December 27 Nintendo Direct press conference. Although the segment was less than two minutes long (running from roughly 34:25 to 36:08), many new pieces of information were acquired. Most importantly, a title, Fire Emblem: Kakusei, and a Japanese release date, April 19, 2011, were revealed. New characters were revealed, along with the fact that every character appears to be voiced, a first for the series. Several former games are mentioned in the video: Gaiden and Seima no Kōseki, in reference to the traversable world map, and Seisen no Keifu, Thracia 776, Seima no Kōseki, Sōen no Kiseki, and Akatsuki no Megami, in reference to the skill system. The skill system in this game will be more open than in previous games, and skills can be rearranged with more freedom than in the past.[3]
New magazine advertisements soon appeared in February 2012, the first in Japanese magazine Jump on February 10. A section of English text describing the game's story and confirmation on several details, such as the free map and the title, were included. Quite notable was the announcement of the My Unit concept reappearing in Kakusei - a customizable main character to represent the player. Next, on February 14, a large feature was published in Famitsu, Japanese gaming magazine, revealing many plot details, especially about Krom, Liz, and My Unit.
On April 21, during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, Kakusei was confirmed for release in Europe, sometime in 2012. Additionally, a new trailer was released, showing off voice-acting during battles and a transformation, similar to that of a tiger laguz.[4] DLC for Japan was confirmed to be free until the end of May as well.[26]
