Biography
Volkhard von Arundel is an Adrestian noble who was granted the title of Lord Arundel and rule of a region on the Adrestian border with Faerghus after his sister Patricia became one of Emperor Ionius IX's consorts. He is credited as being one of the chief instigators of the Insurrection of the Seven, a soft coup in 1171 that rendered Ionius IX a politically impotent figurehead. In 1171, he took his Patricia and his niece Edelgard and fled to Faerghus, where they would live for three years; Patricia married King Lambert and became queen consort during this time. In 1174, he and Edelgard returned to the Empire. He also unexpectedly stopped donating money to the Church of Seiros at this time, and was speculated many years later by his step-nephew Dimitri to have had a hand in orchestrating the Tragedy of Duscur.

Some time after, he was granted the title of regent and supported Edelgard's war against the Church of Seiros and the rest of Fódlan in 1181.

Lord Arundel and a cult known as "those who slither in the dark" teamed up with several corrupt Adrestian nobles, such as Duke Aegir, responsible for abducting all of Ionius IX's children and subjecting them to horrific experimentation to imbue them with two Crests in order to wield the Sword of the Creator, challenge the Nabateans' dominance over humanity, and ultimately conquering all of Fódlan. The sole survivor of these experiments was Edelgard, who swore to destroy both Arundel and his co-conspirators and the Church of Seiros which she blamed for propagating the Crest-worship that led to the deaths of her siblings. To this end, Edelgard reluctantly agreed to work with Arundel in order to make use of his resources to defeat the Church, intending to double-cross him after he outlived his usefulness.
Due to Lord Arundel's sudden shift in personality in 1174 and connections to those who slither in the dark, it is heavily implied in Three Houses and later confirmed in Warriors: Three Hopes that he was disposed of and later replaced by Thales, the leader of those who slither in the dark, for the sake of infiltrating the Adrestian Empire and abusing Volkhard's position in it.

Lord Arundel is briefly seen conspiring with Edelgard in her Flame Emperor identity and taking command of the Death Knight. If Byleth is a member of the Blue Lions, he also has a brief conversation with Dimitri shortly before the incident in Remire Village. During the Battle of Garreg Mach on all routes other than Crimson Flower, Lord Arundel commands Adrestian reinforcements to relieve Edelgard after she is defeated in combat by Church forces. He makes no further appearances on the Silver Snow or Verdant Wind routes.

On the Azure Moon route, Lord Arundel leads the Adrestian invasion of Leicester in the wake of their defeat at the Battle at Gronder. Alliance leader Claude successfully petitions Dimitri for reinforcements, and the Kingdom crushes his troops in a pincer attack and mortally wounds him. Lord Arundel refuses to answer Dimitri's questions about the Tragedy of Duscur and encourages him and Edelgard to kill each other before perishing.

On the Crimson Flower route, after the Empire conquers Leicester, Lord Arundel heads to Derdriu to collect the former Alliance's Heroes' Relics. Byleth may undertake an optional mission to rescue some of his subordinates from an experiment with Demonic Beasts gone awry; afterwards, Hubert speculates that this was an attempt to bully Edelgard's forces and display his power. After Edelgard double-crosses and kills his agent Cornelia at Arianrhod, Lord Arundel confronts and subtly threatens her and Byleth, warning them that if they continue at the rate they are going, the Empire may become another Arianrhod. His meaning is revealed when Hubert reports that Arianrhod was disintegrated by pillars of light; Edelgard scapegoats the Church for its destruction. He makes a final appearance shortly before the final battle for Fhirdiad, and makes a failed attempt to encourage Edelgard to expand her vision to conquering the entire world.

Lord Arundel's sudden shift in personality in 1174, shared voice actors with Thales in both languages, and connections to "those who slither in the dark" are all consistent with other characters killed and replaced by Agarthan infiltrators, suggesting he was murdered in or around 1174 and the man the player has known as Lord Arundel is actually Thales impersonating him.

Biography

Volkhard von Arundel was an Adrestian noble who was granted the title of Lord Arundel and rule of a region on the Adrestian border with Faerghus after his sister Anselma became one of Emperor Ionius IX's consorts. After the events of the Insurrection of the Seven, a soft coup in Imperial Year 1171 that rendered Ionius IX a politically impotent figurehead, took place, he and his niece Edelgard von Hresvelg fled to Faerghus where they lived for three years while concealing her niece's public presence, as he feared she could be used as a political pawn.[3] Despite this however, in 1174, Volkhard returned to the Empire alongside his niece and stopped donating money to the Church of Seiros, which caused his step-nephew, Dimitri, to speculate years later that he might have had a hand in orchestrating the Tragedy of Duscur. Afterwards, he allied himself with Duke Ludwig von Aegir in 1174 in a sudden move that led him to be credited as one of the chief instigators of the Insurrection of the Seven[4][5], and allowed her niece and her siblings in secret to be experimented by those who slither in the dark. Some time after, he was granted the title of regent and supported Edelgard's war against the Church of Seiros and the rest of Fódlan in 1181.
