Between the four axe-users in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light that join in Chapter 2—Barst, Bord, Cord, and Darros—Cord is arguably the worst. Similarly to Bord and Darros, Cord is completely outclassed by Barst; he has disadvantages in his base HP, strength, skill, weapon level, and defense, and equal bases in his other stats. He also has a disadvantage in his strength, skill, speed, luck, and defense growths, with his only advantages being a 40% higher HP growth and a 20% higher weapon level growth. The worst problem Cord has, which is not faced by the other axe-users, is his terrible weapon level; with a weapon level of 3, Cord can use Axes, Steel Axes, Hand Axes, and Hammers—he cannot wield one of the most powerful axes: the Devil Axe. This hugely reduces his combat prowess, making a strong argument to drop him very early into the game. While you could eventually level him up enough to bring his weapon level to a good point thanks to his decent growth, he isn't strong enough to justify using him for long enough to attain this. His best attribute is his speed, which allows him to double most early game enemies, however Barst offers the same speed but with a better growth. Cord also faces the same problems the other units in the fighter class struggle with, namely his lack of a promotion and a mediocre 6 movement. He can offer some decent utility in the early game when he can reliably double most enemies, but if you want an axe user, you should use Barst instead, and he is easily surpassed by the stronger units in this game and should be dropped fairly early.

Cord joins Marth's army with good enough bases to generally avoid getting doubled, even on higher difficulties. His growths in strength and speed are also decent, giving him some long-term potential. However, the primary problem with Cord lies in his horrible weapon ranks – E rank axes and nothing else. This makes him unable to use effective axes for a very long time, as he will need to participate in 38 rounds of combat to raise his axe rank to C. By the time he reaches C rank, other and better axe units will likely have surpassed him by a mile. While axes are a good weapon type to be locked into—they receive no weapon triangle penalties against the axe-heavy early-game and have advantage against the numerous lance users after that—Cord has the lowest starting axe rank among the units he joins with, so there is the least incentive to use him despite his decent growths and workable bases. As such, while Cord is not unusable, he definitely falls short of alternative axe users and should not be deployed in their stead, unless the player wants to use him specifically.

As such, while Cord is not unusable, he definitely falls short of alternative axe users like Barst and Minerva. If the player does want to make him work, he can be used as a melee tank in the early chapters with his Iron Axe to grind up his weapon rank into something more respectable so he can catch up to Barst. Ultimately, Cord needs a noticeable amount of coddling to function, but given that coddling he can truly shine.

I couldn't sit still when I heard you's fighting again, so I came to join in. We're Talys's mercenaries, right? If ya died, Princess Caeda'd cry.
— Cord

Cord (Japanese: マジ Maji) is a fighter in the Fire Emblem series.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

Role

Cord is a Talysian mercenary serving under Ogma alongside his comrades Barst and Bord. The four are sent by King Mostyn of Talys to join Marth when he arrives in Galder, and serve under him for the rest of the War of Shadows.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Between the four axe-users in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light that join in Chapter 2Barst, Bord, Cord, and Darros—Cord is arguably the worst.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Cord is one of the worst units in Book 1. His bases are fairly middling; he is 1 speed short of following up with lighter axes (Iron and Silver Axes with 7 weight) against 0-AS enemies, and his strength is serviceable. However, his growths are very low. His 10% HP growth will only activate twice on average over Cord's 17 available level-ups; this in conjunction with his low bases in HP and defense greatly limits his survivability, even in spite of his respectable 40% defense growth. His 30% strength growth is also low for a unit that cannot reliably follow up, impeding his potential damage output. Additionally, as Cord is not in a class capable of promoting, he has only 17 levels to grow and can not receive the stat boost promotion offers, limiting his effectiveness as the game progresses.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

When Cord hears that Marth has set out on a new journey, he and Bord immediately set out to rejoin him. Cord meets Marth in a village on the outskirts of Macedon and joins his company, serving under him for the rest of the War of Heroes.

As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique shared weapon named for Cord and Bord available through Everyone's Conditions: Bordcord Axe.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Cord is a very unremarkable unit. He joins with serviceable bases and decent growths, particularly the 100% HP growth, but this is all overshadowed by his crippling E rank in axes at base. This means that regardless of class Cord will be stuck with E rank weaponry and he simply isn't good enough to get items such as Arm Scrolls and forged weaponry as many other units make better use of them. Cord does benefit from promotion letting him escape the low weapon levels he's plagued by, but the same can be said of other units and there are simply many units worth investing into and promoting over Cord.

Personality

While Cord is nondescript in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, his personality is expanded upon in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. Cord is undyingly loyal to both Ogma and Caeda. He extends this loyalty to Marth because his death would break Caeda's heart. Cord also has a fierce rivalry with his brother Bord.
