Count Grégoire von Varley is a non-playable character mentioned in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and appearing in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. He is Bernadetta's father and the head of House Varley.
Biography
Pre-games
Grégoire is the head of House Varley the Adrestian Empire and Minister of Religious Affairs, though due to the Southern Church's dismantlement a century earlier, he's more involved with the Empire's judiciary.[1] By Imperial Year 1163, he has a daughter, Bernadetta von Varley, whom he considered to have marry Ferdinand von Aegir, scion of House Aegir, early on[2] as a way to increase his house's wealth.[3] In 1171, Count Varley was involved in the Insurrection of the Seven, in which Duke Ludwig von Aegir and other Imperial nobles seized power from Emperor Ionius IX after the latter was pushing reforms which would consolidate the power to himself.[4]
Three Houses
In 1181, after Edelgard's coup against Duke Aegir, Grégoire attempts to oppose Edelgard but ends up losing his title and given house arrest as a result,[5] remaining in said position during the Crimson Flower route. In Azure Moon, troops of his house are employed during the Empire's last stand against the forces of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.[6] Finally, in the Verdant Wind and Silver Snow routes, Count Varley is released from his arrest after Edelgard's death and resumes control of House Varley, though if Byleth talks to Bernadetta, they are given the option to either restore his house arrest or exile him.
Warriors: Three Hopes
Early in 1180, Grégoire arrives at Enbarr Palace after Edelgard's coup against Duke Aegir and Lord Arundel, and feigns ignorace regarding Ludwig's corruption upon hearing the news of what transpired. Edelgard then tells him of her intention to reestablish the Southern Church and asks him to become its bishop; despite his bewilderment, Grégoire accepts and makes ready to oversee Edelgard's coronation. Unbeknownst to Grégoire, Edelgard's intent in doing so is to alienate the Empire's faithful from the Central Church of Seiros and gain popular support for her coming war against the Church, incurring the Central Church's wrath against Grégoire in the process. By the time Edelgard declared her war in 1181, Grégoire had been the subject of relentless censure and at least one assassination attempt from the Central Church.

Grégoire von Varley |
Grégoire is the French form of Gregory, a Greek name meaning "watchful". Varley is probably a mistranslation of Váli, a son of Odin in Norse mythology who avenges Baldr's death. |
