Gilbert was born Gustave Eddie Dominic, brother of Baron Dominic of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. He was originally a common soldier before being personally knighted by King Lambert and assigned to act as a combat instructor for both him and his son Dimitri. When the Tragedy of Duscur occurred, he personally saved Dimitri's life, but was far too late to save Lambert. Descending into self-loathing as a result of his failure, Gustave abandoned his wife and daughter Annette to travel to Garreg Mach Monastery, where he joined the Knights of Seiros under the name Gilbert.

Gilbert is introduced to Byleth shortly before the mission to subdue Miklan and his bandits, and accompanies them to Conand Tower and aids them in the battle. When Edelgard declares war on the Church of Seiros, he fights in the Battle of Garreg Mach on the Church's side, but is defeated. Afterwards, he returns to Faerghus and resumes his role as a knight of the Kingdom.

On the Silver Snow route, after the Resistance takes control of the Great Bridge of Myrddin, he approaches the group to request military aid on behalf of Dimitri, who is planning to attack the Empire. Seteth grants them passage through Myrddin, but their troops are too exhausted for him to supply reinforcements. Gilbert is later killed in action in the Battle at Gronder. On the Azure Moon route, Gilbert spends the five year interim investigating rumors of Dimitri's survival and eventually tracks him down to Garreg Mach Monastery. He joins Byleth and the Kingdom army and serves in an advisory capacity throughout the war with the Empire. Gilbert makes no direct storyline appearances in Part II on the Verdant Wind route; if Annette was recruited however, she mentions in Chapter 18 that he was seen in the Battle at Gronder on Faerghus's side and was last seen carrying Dimitri's dead body away.[3] On the Crimson Flower route, Gilbert is one of the commanders of the combined Kingdom/Church army in the final battle in Fhirdiad; he can be either circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Gilbert is a prepromoted Fortress Knight, automatically joining Byleth's group during the beginning of Part II on the Azure Moon route but is otherwise unavailable in the other three routes. His personal skill, Veteran Knight, slightly reduces his damage taken as long as he has a battalion equipped. He has high bases and growths in HP, strength, dexterity, and defense, solidifying him as a physical tank, conversely having very low luck and resistance, leaving him vulnerable to magic and critical hits. His base speed is extremely low for his join time, at a paltry base of 2 (technically 8, due to the Fortress Knight class's speed modifier of -6). His low speed base can be somewhat remedied by immediately promoting him to a Warrior, bumping up his speed to 14, which will at least save him from being doubled by most enemies during the first few chapters of Part II on lower difficulties. This does not help him become faster however, since his speed growth in the same is also low, at 30% without class modifiers.

One of Gilbert's main issues is that he joins at a somewhat late point in the game when the player is very likely to have trained various different units excelling at various roles, who already had several chapters worth of tutoring back in Part I. At best, Gilbert can serve as a decent filler tank unit in Dedue's absence until the latter's return in chapter 16 (provided War for the Weak was completed back in Part I), then Gilbert is better off benched from that point onward since it takes too much time and investment to further train him into anything else aside from the classes he has already unlocked at base.

Should the player still wish to use Gilbert anyway in spite of being generally outperformed by his peers, then there are some promotion options that he can undertake to raise him on par with other player units. Firstly, a promotion to a Brigand to obtain Death Blow is recommended for an increase to his strength when attacking on player phase. In contrast to Dedue, Gilbert has a boon in Riding, allowing him to easily pursue the Great Knight or Paladin certification. As for any classes that require skill proficiencies that Gilbert has no prior training in, they are generally difficult for him to acquire due to his late join time. He would greatly appreciate strong endgame classes such as the Wyvern Lord or War Master, both of which are excellent front-line fighters, with one having excellent mobility and Canto while the other has high innate crit rate and, if mastered, Quick Riposte. Both are time consuming, albeit not unrealistic, for him to achieve; since he already starts with high weapon ranks in Lances and Axes, he can set his skill goal to either only Flying or Brawling, respectively, allowing him to reasonably promote into these classes by mid to late Part II.

Personality

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

Gilbert is deeply serious, faithful, and polite. He doesn't talk much about himself, making it hard to get to know him, but he does love fishing and cooking.

In the years following the Tragedy of Duscur, Gilbert submitted himself to a self-imposed exile from Faerghus. He left behind his wife and child and he began to serve the Knights of Seiros. He feels great guilt at being unable to save the rest of Dimitri's family. In his exile he wrote letters to his wife and daughter, but he never sent them. If he reconciles with Annette, he gives her the letters he wrote over the years and tells her she may do with them as she wishes.

Endings

Gilbert, Veteran Patriot (single ending)
Gilbert returned to Fhirdiad and resumed his duty as a knight, faithfully serving King Dimitri for many years. When he finally retired, it is said he spent the rest of his days coaching the young prince in the art of combat.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Gilbert, Veteran Patriot
When Byleth took on the role of archbishop in Rhea's place, <he/she> devoted <himself/herself> to official business as the new leader of the Church of Seiros. Reaching an agreement with the Kingdom, <he/she> worked tirelessly on the restoration and development of all of Fódlan. Behind <his/her> achievements was the knight Gustave, formerly known as Gilbert of the Knights of Seiros, who remained always by the archbishop's side. Byleth came to rely on Gustave for nearly everything. It is said that <he/she> continued to call upon Gustave for instruction and advice well into his retirement.

Dimitri, Savior King & Gilbert, Veteran Patriot
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. At his side was the knight, Gustave, who had discarded the name of Gilbert and reaffirmed his oath of fealty to the royal family. After many more years of service, in which the trust between them grew and never wavered, Gustave finally wished to retire. Though he bristled slightly at Dimitri's request to look after and tutor the young prince, it is said that Gustave took on that duty with due patience and solemnity for the remainder of his life.

Annette, Bloomed Overachiever & Gilbert, Veteran Patriot
Gustave discarded the name of Gilbert and reaffirmed his oath of fealty to King Dimitri and the royal family. After returning to Fhirdiad, he reunited with his wife, who had returned to live with Baron Dominic, and his beloved daughter, Annette, who had begun teaching at the capital's school of sorcery. Though it was initially an awkward reunion, over time the family rekindled their love for one another. As the shadow of war receded from the Kingdom, the three spent their days happily making up for lost time.
