Fire Emblem Fates (Japanese: ファイアーエムブレムif Fire Emblem if)[1] is a turn-based strategy role-playing game for the Nintendo 3DS system. It is the fourteenth installment in the Fire Emblem series. It was officially revealed in a Nintendo Direct broadcast on January 14th, 2015.[2] The game was stated not be connected to any previous entries in the series in terms of plot or characters.[3] However, this statement is not entirely true, as Severa, Owain, and Inigo from Fire Emblem Awakening appear in this game. Character designs and artwork were handled by Yūsuke Kozaki, who was also responsible for the character designs of Awakening, while the story was written by the manga storywriter and novelist Shin Kibayashi.[3]
As first confirmed in a Japanese Nintendo Direct broadcast in April 2015, Fates has two editions in both Japan and the United States: Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright (Japanese: ファイアーエムブレムif白夜王国 Fire Emblem if White Night Kingdom) and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest (Japanese: ファイアーエムブレムif暗夜王国 Fire Emblem if Black Night Kingdom).[4][5] Players who buy the Birthright version will side with the Hoshidan army in game, and players who purchase the Conquest version will side with the Nohrian army. The side not purchased first by the player is available as DLC at a discounted price after release. There will also be a third side to the story, known as Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation (Japanese: ファイアーエムブレムifインビジブルキングダム Fire Emblem if Invisible Kingdom), in which the player rejects both Hoshido and Nohr, and seeks a resolution to the conflict on their own.[6] This story will be available as DLC shortly after the game's release. A "Special Edition" is also available. The Japanese version of the Special Editon contains the Birthright and Conquest campaigns on the cartridge, with Revelation being a free download. The North American version comes with all three paths on the cartridge, with no downloads required.
Plot
The story features two opposing kingdoms, the black kingdom of Nohr, and the white kingdom of Hoshido. The Avatar is allegedly a blood descendant of the Hoshido family, however, the Avatar was kidnapped by Garon and placed into the care of the Nohr royal family. The major choices in the game revolve around who the Avatar wishes to align with throughout the story.
Gameplay
It was mentioned in the Nintendo Direct broadcast of January 2015 that the choices the player makes during gameplay will have a "greater than ever" effect on the game's world,[3] though it is currently unknown how great an effect. It was also revealed that the game will feature challenges "the likes of which have never been seen in the series, up until now".[3]
From the teaser trailer, it was confirmed that Pair Up will return.[2] However, the Jun 2015 Famitsu issue revealed that Pair Up and the accompanying dual guard and dual attack mechanics have been changed. Dual attacks now only occur when the units are adjacent, but not paired up, and dual guards only occur between paired up units.[7]
The game introduces what appear to be Japanese-style equivalents to the traditional weapon triangle of sword, lance, and axe: the katana (刀), a form of single-edged sword, the naginata (薙刀), a type of polearm with a weapon triangle advantage over swords, and the club (金棒 kanabō), a truncheon-like weapon. Bows have also gained a placement in the weapon triangle; so far, they are known to have a disadvantage to the katana. A mage casting ice magic with what appear to be fans also features in the trailer; it is currently unknown what relation this has to the tome magic featured in previous games.
Monsters of some sort also make a return, with a golem like monster bearing the Mouth of Truth as a face appearing in the CGI trailer.[8] There is also another large built monster, defeated by Marx in the trailer, who appears to be wearing some sort of mask.[9] In the April direct, this monster was shown to be called "Nosferatu" (ノスフェラトウ).
The game also features damage to a unit's armor, in the Nintendo direct, the Avatar is seen attacking an axe using enemy, when the enemy takes damage, their pauldrons shatter.[10] The masked monster mentioned earlier also loses its mask when damaged, as demonstrated by Marx. It is unknown if this has any gameplay effects or is aesthetic. This was actually present as a feature in Fire Emblem Awakening, but only seen on Grima, his face plate is destroyed past a certain amount of damage.
There also appear to be terrain bonus alterations, one being that water tiles now subtract 10 avoid.[11]
Weapon durability has been removed, similarly to Fire Emblem Gaiden.[12]
The Classic and Casual Modes introduced in New Mystery of the Emblem return once again. Fates also introduces "Phoenix Mode", wherein fallen units are revived the turn after they are defeated.[12]
Unlike Awakening, dragonstones now have a weapon rank that can increase from E to A like most other weapons. This is demonstrated by the Avatar having a C rank in dragonstones.

List of characters in Fire Emblem Fates
Seven named characters appear in the January teaser trailer: Hana (カザハナ Kazahana), Hinoka (Japanese: ヒノカ Hinoka), Rinkah (Japanese: リンカ Rinka), Felicia (Japanese: フェリシア Felicia), Ganz (ガンズ), Xander (Japanese: マークス Marx), and Kamui (Japanese: カムイ), who has since been revealed to be the Avatar of this game. The trailer also prominently featured a blue-haired woman, whose name is was not revealed until the Fire Emblem TCG stream on April 14th 2015. The Avatar appears wielding a sword called Yato (Japanese: 夜刀神 Yatogami; the Yato is a katana in the final product as opposed to a sword), which literally translates to "Night Blade God". Kamui was confirmed to be an Avatar type unit in the Nintendo Direct on April 1st, 2015. In a press release screenshot and the Famitsu leak their class was revealed to be Nohr Prince(ss) (ダークプリンス/ダークプリンセス), a class that has the ability to use swords and dragonstones. The enemy faction portrayed in the January trailer are soldiers of Nohr (暗夜兵[2]), possibly indicating that in this instance, the Avatar has sided with Hoshido. The name of the Avatar's sword features the character 夜, indicating a possible connection to either of the two kingdoms of Nohr or Hoshido (being known in Japanese as the "black night" and "white night" kingdoms respectively).
The April 1/2 Nintendo Direct [13] introduces further characters, and gives names to characters introduced in the January trailer. The red-clad soldier of Hoshido seen facing off against the paladin Xander is now known as Ryoma (Japanese: リョウマ Ryouma). Elsewhere, the glory-seeking ruler of Nohr, Garon (ガロン), is introduced. Other characters shown are: Camilla (Japanese: カミラ Camilla) the purple haired revenant knight of Nohr (a newly introduced class), Elise (Japanese: エリーゼ) the blonde rod knight of Nohr (another new class), Orochi (Japanese: オロチ) a Hoshidan woman who appears to be the character casting ice magic in the previous trailer, Sakura (Japanese: サクラ) who is a red-haired cleric, Takumi (Japanese: タクミ) who is a Hoshidan archer, and Subaki (Japanese: ツバキ Tsubaki) a male Hoshidan pegasus knight with a very masculine voice.
On 14 April, 2015, the blue-haired woman's name was revealed to be Azura (Japanese: アクア Aqua).[14]
On May 6th a promotional board at a Japanese store revealed the name of the blond magic using Nohrian prince. He is called prince Leo (Japanese: レオン Leon).[15]
On May 20th, various characters were revealed through different magazine outlets. These characters are: Jakob (Japanese: ジョーカー Joker), a butler from Nohr, Gunter (Japanese: ギュンター Gunter) a Great Knight and servant of the Avatar, Kaze (Japanese: スズカぜ Suzukaze), a calm Hoshidian ninja, and Kagerou (Japanese: カゲロウ), a female ninja. The unnamed cavalier from earlier trailers also had his named revealed, Silas (Japanese: サイラス Cyrus). A female Dark Mage also appears; she is known as Nyx (Japanese: ニュクス). Another character, an on-foot-lance-using unit, Lance Fighter, named Oboro (Japanese: オボロ). Effie (Japanese: エルフィ Elfie), a knight, who also appeared in the first trailer for the game.
On May 27th even more characters were showcased, and some previous ones elaborated. The "brave hero" from last issue was revealed to be named Arthur (Japanese: ハロルド Harold), Hinata (Japanese: ヒナタ) a "samurai" (similar to the myrmidon), and a spellcaster, Tsukuyomi (Japanese: ツクヨミ).
The website updated with a character page on May 31st 2015, this update added a small portion of new characters. Charlotte (Japanese: シャーロッテ), the first female fighter in the entire series, and a knight named Benoit (Japanese: ブノワ), who has a scary appearance but is friendly. The name of the Hoshidian ruler was also revealed, her name is Mikoto (Japanese: ミコト), she has no class listed. In the Nintendo Direct that also occurred that day the wyvern rider Crimson (Japanese: クリムゾン) also appeared, she was later revealed to be a Nohrian who defected to the Hoshidan cause.
The June 4th weekly famitsu also revealed more characters, Berka (Japanese: ベルカ) a wyvern rider and direct subordinate of Camilla, Luna (Japanese: ルーナ), another subordinate of Camilla. Luna bears an extreme resemblance to Severa, and they share voice actors; the character was later revealed to actually be Severa, one of three Awakening children characters in Fates''s plot. A particular character of interest is Nishiki (Japanese: ニシキ), who is a "Fox Spirit" similar to the laguz or taguel; as the class name suggests, he can transform into a large fox.
Development
Fire Emblem Fates was first announced during a Nintendo Direct broadcast on 14 January, 2015.[2][3] Further information was revealed in a second Nintendo Direct broadcast on 1/2 April, 2015.[13][4] Information on the My Castle feature was also revealed in a japan-exclusive Nintendo Direct on May 31st.
The official site was also revamped on May 31st 2015 after the direct, with a characters page, and other pages on various mechanics.
The Nintendo Treehouse section of E3 2015 on 16 June featured the game in English for the first time, albeit at a very early stage of the localisation process - debug information was displayed on the bottom screen at various points, and the game apparently crashed during the playing of a cutscene.[16] Shown during the segment was gameplay of the game's second chapter, and a brief section of the cutscene in Chapter 6, where the Avatar is forced to choose between siding with Nohr or Hoshido. Also featured was gameplay of My Castle, as yet untranslated.
Nintendo's South Korean subsidiary has confirmed that Fates will be the first Fire Emblem game to be translated into the Korean language and officially published in South Korea.[17]
