With few traces left of Ashnard's missing son, Pelleas, Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade plan to return to Daein through the Desert of Death. While they prepare, they say farewell to Nailah, who suggests bringing Volug along to protect them, explaining his ability to halfshift. Though Micaiah initially objects, she later accepts Volug's company. After they leave, Volug senses many beorc to the south, prompting them to travel that way. In some ruins to the south, Tauroneo, Zihark, and Jill attempt to hold their ground against a squadron of Begnion soldiers. Seeing them in trouble, Micaiah and co. elect to aid them. Sothe recognizes Tauroneo in the middle of the battle.
After the battle, Sothe greets the three and introduces them to Micaiah. Izuka then barges out of the building, and Tauroneo subsequently introduces him as Pelleas's advisor. Sothe then asks to join Tauroneo along with the Dawn Brigade, and Tauroneo agrees. Izuka accuses them of being Begnion spies, though after being told that they are, in fact, the Dawn Brigade, he then begins recognizes Micaiah as the Silver-Haired Maiden, begins devising some schemes, and urges her to meet Pelleas.
Inside the building, Izuka introduces Pelleas and his mother, Almedha, to the Dawn Brigade. Pelleas reveals that he only recently learned that he was a prince, and was raised as a commoner until then. Afterwards, Izuka appoints Micaiah as the Vice-General of the Daein Liberation Army, though she objects, accounting for her lack of military experience. Sothe sees it as a scheme to use Micaiah as a figurehead for Izuka's plans. Pelleas then pleads Micaiah to accept so that they can save Daein, to which she accepts.
Later outside, Sothe chastises Micaiah for her decision, on the grounds that it would draw unnecessary attention to them. In reply, Micaiah declares that she wants to protect Daein more than anything, even if it means sacrificing herself; she also states she feels that Pelleas feels the same. After telling that her current visions are ones of hope, Sothe declares that he will protect Micaiah.
Beginning log
The history of Tellius is a history of warfare, or so the troubadours sing. It is a history of unending conflict between the beorc and the laguz, a history penned in blood and scarred by mistrust. The beorc fight with the weapons of man--the sword, the axe, the lance, and the magic arts... while the laguz, able to transform into beast, bird, and dragon, are weapons unto themselves. Both were created equally by the goddess, but neither race has ever accepted the other. The heron prince Rafiel, the wolf queen of Hatari, Nailah, and her vassal, Volug. Is the Dawn Brigade’s meeting with these three laguz chance...or a sign of things to come? Micaiah can only wonder.
