Claud (Japanese: クロード Claud) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. He was the lord of the Edda dukedom of Grannvale, a full-blooded descendant of Bragi of the Twelve Crusaders, and head of the Church of Edda. Gifted with divine foresight, he learned the reality of the chaos engulfing the noble houses of Grannvale, and was an ally of Sigurd following the false accusations laid against him about the death of Prince Kurth.
Biography
Six months into Sigurd's occupation of Agustria, Claud arrived at Madino Castle with Tailtiu in tow, warning Sigurd of the death of Kurth and the rumors implicating Sigurd in Kurth's murder. Afterward, Claud departed for Bragi Tower to pray and attempt to divine the truth of the conflict. He and Tailtiu emerged from the tower after Sigurd defeated Chagall at Sylvale Castle, having learned the reality of Reptor and Lombard being behind Kurth's death, and having found Valkyrie, long thought to be lost. He subsequently accompanied Sigurd in exile to Silesse. During Sigurd's stay in Silesse, Claud went back to Grannvale to check on the situation, before coming back to Sigurd to report on the situation. He then stayed with Sigurd on the march back to Grannvale and in the Battle of Belhalla, in which he foresaw his own death.[2]
Claud is deceased as of Grann 776; however, Sleuf claims to have communed with Claud's soul at Bragi Tower, received a prophecy from him, and was told to act as Claud's eyes in the mortal world in observing the fate of Jugdral.[3]

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Claud is a level 20 High Priest who joins in Chapter 3. He has high magic and resistance, but he is very frail. Claud can use C-rank wind, thunder, and fire magic, allowing him to perform magic chip damage should the need arise, but his low HP, defense, and movement, along with a lack of any combat skills prevent him from being useful as a dedicated combat unit, and having only a C rank in all of his usable offensive magic even as a promoted unit means he cannot use anything stronger than the basic level tomes. Claud has major Bragi Holy Blood, which increases his HP, magic, luck, and resistance growths; since he joins at a high level, he will make limited use of these bonuses. Major Bragi blood grants Claud ★ rank in staves, allowing him to use every staff in the game, including the Valkyrie staff he joins with.
With Valkyrie, Claud can resurrect a single dead ally per use; resurrecting an ally can be helpful if the player is playing through the game without resetting to try for more desirable outcomes, or when playing for rankings to prevent a reduction in the survival rank—Valkyrie will not reduce an individual unit's losses for the combat rank, however. If the player is resetting, Valkyrie will be of limited use, as Genealogy of the Holy War allows the player to save at the start of every turn. Additionally, Valkyrie can be used only once before it must be repaired, and repairing it costs 30,000 gold; Claud starts with 10,000 gold, but will struggle to obtain the remaining 20,000 without receiving it from a lover or Dew.
Claud's primary flaw is his low movement. High Priests have below-average movement even for infantry at only 5; Claud shares this movement with Arden, among others. 5 movement prevents Claud from keeping up with the mounted frontline and much of the infantry following them; he can sometimes be unable to reach front-line units even with Physic or Fortify. Claud's low movement is less of an issue in Chapter 3, as he joins in a location where it matters less, but he struggles in Chapters 4 and 5.
If Claud and Edain are lovers in Chapter 5, Claud can grant Edain the Rescue staff in an event; this is one of two ways to obtain Rescue in the first generation, the other being through an event in Chapter 4 between Edain and Azelle that requires they be lovers. Neither Claud nor Edain makes strong use of Rescue as they both have 5 move, but Lachesis—when promoted to Master Knight—will have A level staves and 9 move, allowing her to bring units much further than they could move on their own. If Azelle grants Edain Rescue, the player will have access to it in Chapter 4 where it is particularly helpful, but will be unable to use it in the second generation until late in Chapter 8 at the earliest if Claud sires Ced; if Claud grants Edain Rescue, it will be unavailable in Chapter 4, but Edain's daughter Lana can inherit it from the start of Chapter 6; if Rescue is inherited by no one, it can be purchased from the armory in Chapter 10
As a father
Claud's children will inherit Bragi Holy Blood—which increases HP, magic, luck, and resistance growths—but he has no skills to pass down. Claud will always pass major Bragi blood and Valkyrie to his son—or if he marries Brigid, his daughter Patty—regardless of if they can use Valkyrie. The only children that can potentially use Valkyrie if they inherit it are Erinys's son Ced and Silvia's son Coirpre.
If Claud is Lana's father, she inherits minor Bragi blood, increasing her staff level to A allowing her to inherit and use the high-level staves Rescue and Fortify at base. When not inherited, most staves—especially stronger ones—only become available late in the second generation; for example, Rescue is first available in Chapter 10, and Fortify and Warp in Chapter 9. Like Claud and Edain, Lana has low movement that limits her ability to heal or to use Rescue. Leif, like Lachesis, can promote to Master Knight with high move and A staves—he can provide strong staff utility, especially with Rescue, in the second generation. Claud will greatly reduce Lester's usefulness, however. Lester's strength will be greatly reduced, and he will be unable to inherit any bows. Claud and Edain are easy to pair; they have the same movement and utility, and can spend much time adjacent to each other without drastically reducing either of their usefulness.
Both Claud and Silvia possess Bragi Holy Blood; if Claud marries Silvia, both of their children will have major Bragi blood. Lene's survivability is slightly boosted by the increase to her HP, Resistance, and avoid; however, she inherits nothing else from Claud. Coirpre will not inherit Claud's tomes, but will inherit his staves, including Valkyrie. However, Claud does not significantly improve Coirpre, as the only staff that it allows him to use he would otherwise be incapable of using is Valkyrie. Claud and Silvia are relatively easy to pair as they have similar movement, but Silvia is often closer to combat than Claud, and is often given the Knight Ring and some times Leg Ring, which increases her mobility greatly above Claud's.
Both of Erinys's children—Ced and Fee—appreciated the growth boosts from Bragi Holy Blood; as a Sage, Ced uses magic to attack, and Fee can better use magic swords such as the Wind Sword, can better take attacks from enemy magic-users, and gains more avoid. Both units also appreciate the boost to staff level; Fee gains B staves upon promotion instead of a C rank, allowing her to use more than just the most basic staves; Ced gains ★ staves instead of B, allowing him to use every staff in the game. Ced's base magic makes him one of the best users of status staves, and Claud gives him great magic. Pairing Claud and Erinys, however, requires that Erinys—as a flier—be restrained, limiting her contributions to keep her adjacent to Claud.
Another noteworthy pairing for Claud is with Tailtiu. It is very easy to get, as Claud joins alongside Tailtiu, they have similar movement, and they have a high love point base. Claud passes down major Bragi Holy Blood to Arthur and minor Bragi blood to Tine, improving their growths in four areas, most importantly in magic. However, as Claud does not pass down any skills, both Arthur and Tine will be stuck only with Wrath as a skill. While Arthur will inherit Valkyrie, neither Mage nor Mage Knight is capable of wielding staves; Tine can use staves upon promoting to Mage Fighter, and will have A staves with the boost from minor Bragi blood, allowing her to use every staff but Valkyrie—as she has 6 movement, she is a worse wielder of strong staves than Leif or Fee. Both children benefit more from inheriting Follow-Up and minor Fjalar blood—which boosts magic more than Bragi blood—from Azelle, or Vantage from Lex to synergize with Wrath. Alternately, Arthur benefits strongly from Lewyn as a father, as he will be able to use the powerful Forseti tome, and will be the only mounted unit after promotion capable of using it.
