In Fire Emblem Fates, enemy units who are captured are sent as prisoners to the prison facility at the player's My Castle. The player can recruit these units from the prison. Prisoner units can fulfil several uses, including helping to reinforce their army if they are missing proper units, and giving the player a unit with access to unique skill combinations which ordinary playable units would otherwise not be able to easily obtain.
Overview
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
Once the prison has been constructed, Orochi and Niles can use their personal skills, Capture and Kidnap respectively, to send defeated units to the prison. After clearing the map, the prison can then be visited in My Castle to view the captured units. There are two ways of convicing prisoners to defect to the player's army: to spend resources to bribe them, or to have the current prison guard attempt to persuade them. Bribing works automatically, but persuasion may require multiple tries to succeed.
Like Bonus Units, Prisoner units have no dialogue, however their facial expression changes depending on their level up such as grinning enthusiastically on a great level up, or wincing when receiving a bad level up.
Upon Class Change, Generic units will keep their original portrait, but use the head-model of the generic promoted class. For example, a Generic Fighter will keep his brunette, helmetless portrait, but have a grey haired, helmeted model if promoted to Hero.
Stats
This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.
- Items: Prisoners do not retain their inventory from before their capture.
- Skills: Prisoners retain all skills when recruited, with the exception of enemy exclusive skills like Dragonskin and Pavise+, which either disappear or are downgraded into regular skills. Skills that are unusual for a class, but aren't enemy-exclusive will remain, such as an enemy Archer retaining Counter after conversion into the player army.
Compatible enemy units
All generic human enemies are able to be captured and recruited. Non-human units cannot be captured at all; this includes both members of non-human classes (Faceless, Stoneborns, Kitsune, Nine-Tails, Wolfskins, Wolfssegners), and Vallite and Illusion soldiers.
Only thirteen bosses are allowed to be captured and recruited, most of them coming from paralogues. All other bosses cannot be captured. These thirteen are:
Names
There are 137 possible names for generic prisoner units, which are assigned to them once they enter the prison. The names are assigned to units based on their gender and nation of origin, and are divided into four sets: Hoshidan men, Nohrian men, Hoshidan women, and Nohrian women. The capturable bosses retain their own names once imprisoned.

Miscellaneous
These names are used for the generic units that can be bought in the castle's Einherjar Shop. The first eight are Hoshidan, and the last eight are Nohrian.

Trivia
- Like the Nintendo DS-era replacement units, some prisoner names are (probably accidentally) shared with other characters in the Fire Emblem series. In the Japanese version, the Nohrian-male name Fels is shared with Pheros from Awakening, and the last eight units, whose names count from one to eight in German, once again share their names with the Japanese names of the first eight Deadlords from Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776, and Awakening, although Sieben is once again spelled slightly differently here. In the NTSC English version, the names Stefan, Bertram, Roland, Astrid, Ursula, and Nina are all reused from official localizations, while Japanese character names such as Hilda, Reinhard, and Stella also appear. The "Nina" name has the unusual distinction of sharing a name with a character from the same-language version of Fates itself.
- Generic Outlaws normally wear their hood up, but after their release from the prison, and becoming a playable unit, their hood is worn down just like Niles.
- Villagers have data for being captured, and their own personal growth rate, but as all enemy villagers are only found in the Arena or as Vallites, they cannot be captured ingame. This may change with future DLC.
