- In Mystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
|
Matthis is a Cavalier who joins in chapter 4. His base stats are average – lower than the stats of Cain and Abel, two cavaliers who join earlier – but still high enough to be workable. Matthis' main advantage over Cain and Abel is his base weapon level of 8, which allows him to wield the Killing Edge and the Silver Lance with no investment. That said, if Cain and Abel have gained a few levels, their weapon level will be similar to Matthis's, negating this advantage. Weapons requiring a higher weapon level are limited in the early game, so there will not be enough for all three cavaliers to use simultaneously. This limits Matthis's early utility; while having many units with a higher weapon level is good for flexibility, there is not much benefit from that early on in book 1. Matthis also has inferior overall growths compared to Cain and Abel, making him a worse growth unit.
Considering all of that, Matthis's primary competition outshines him in every aspect. However, he is good enough to be usable if the player wants to. He still benefits from the Cavalier class's high movement in outdoor maps. Since the enemies in Mystery of the Emblem tend to be weak, he is still capable of decent combat in most situations.

Marth calms him down, and Matthis brings up how different Marth is from Prince Michalis. He serves in the Archanean League until the war's conclusion.

Analysis

|
Matthis is one of three interchangeable and very weak Cavaliers, alongside Roshea and Vyland. He has miserable base stats and unspectacular growths other than HP. In fact, his bases are almost exactly the same as the Cavalier class bases, showing just how poor they are. Abel, Cain, Hardin, and Frey easily outclass him both as a Cavalier and in any role he could fill by reclassing. Matthis simply has nothing to offer and is not worth investing in.

Analysis

|
Matthis is a replacement Cavalier that only serves to replace any other unit you may have lost before now. His bases are on par with Luke and Roderick when they joined 10 maps earlier in Prologue 3 meaning he is already significantly behind in terms of stats. On top of that his growths are very unimpressive by the standards of this game and lacking in every field when compared to any Cavalier that joins earlier, making him not worth the investment over any other unit. A bench warmer, through and through. Only use him if you have to.
Personality and character
Matthis is shown to be a peaceful, unfortunate civilian who was caught up in the war. He never wanted to join the army, only enlisting because he was forced to. He is terrified of meeting Marth because he assumes he'll be just like Michalis. He loves his sister Lena and places his trust in her when they meet on the battlefield. His endings indicate that he prefers to live a simple, peaceful life without fighting.
