===Analysis=== | |||
analysis | |||
Hawk is one of the best substitute units in Genealogy, mostly thanks to his sheer stats. He has very high base stats in most areas, and he has two useful skills: Follow-Up and Adept, with the former allowing him to double enemies and the latter allowing him to attack extra times in rounds of combat. He has a high Adept activation rate thanks to his high speed, allowing him to one-round enemies that he could not kill with two attacks alone. Hawk's growth rates are very low, with his HP and speed growths being the only solid ones, but because his base stats are very good, that drawback does not impact him very much.
Hawk has a B rank in all magic types (other than dark magic) and in staves, so he can use most tomes and staves available to the player, giving him high flexibility and allowing him to double as a utility unit. He is unmounted, so his mobility is far worse than that of the player's cavalry, but he still has his uses. He can defend the player's castles in Chapter 9 once Arion sends his Wyvern Riders toward them, and he will deal a lot of damage to these wyverns due to their low resistance. Aside from that, Hawk's high resistance is a very useful trait in Chapter 10 and Endgame, which are both littered with enemy magic and status staff users. Hawk can approach these enemies much more safely than most other units, substitutes or not, and he can also use a Restore staff to remove status effects from the player's units. The Restore staff's 10 range somewhat mitigates Hawk's disadvantage in movement compared to cavalry. Furthermore, his base 22 magic coupled with two events that grant +3 magic each (enter Luthecia castle, marry Tine/Linda and talk to them in the Endgame) can ensure he always hits 28 magic, the amount needed (with a Magic Ring, needed to negate a Barrier Ring) to hit Ishtar with a status staff in Endgame.
Because Hawk has solid base stats and a good set of skills, he needs no investment, which distinguishes him from other substitute units, who generally do need investment due to their shortcomings. However, there are some tools he can benefit from. In particular, giving Hawk at least one Shield Ring is a good idea if the player plans to have him enter significant combat, as Hawk's defense of 9 is one of his weakest stats and can be insufficient.
