Wallace was born in Caelin, Lycia, and as such, he attempted to become a full-out knight of Caelin at a young age. Despite this, Wallace was a thin and weak child, and other squires bullied him, often by calling him a girl. In this time, however, Wallace eventually met a new teacher who helped in his training, leading to him becoming one of the best knights in Caelin's employ; this teacher also taught Wallace one of the most important lessons in life: use his fighting skills not for evil, but for the sake of the people. Wallace does not know what became of this teacher, but upon rejoining Eliwood's or Hector's army, he comes across a figure who bears an uncanny resemblance to him, as well as his name.

Despite declaring loyalty to Caelin, Wallace had previously intentionally refused to follow orders declared by Lord Hausen; one of these events occured when he was assigned to prevent Madelyn and Hassar from fleeing to Sacae. While Wallace did eventually catch up to them, he elected to leave the pair alone, claiming that the duo eluded him when he reported to Hausen. While he ended up getting locked in a dungeon for six months, he did not regret his decision.

While he continued to work with Caelin, including training a young Kent and Sain, Wallace later retired from his work and elected to become a farmer. Upon Lundgren's attempts to seize control of Caelin, Wallace was later ordered out of retirement to capture "impostors" to the throne. Wallace then first appears in Chapter 9: A Grim Reunion, confronting the supposed "impostor". Upon finding that this impostor is none other than the daughter of the couple Wallace had previously let go, he elects to fight for Lyn instead of Lundgren; in addition, Wallace refuses to believe Lyn could be lying about her past, saying that not only are her eyes truthful, but that the proud nomads of Sacae never tell lies.

After the defeat of Lundgren, Wallace begins to attempt to explore the lands of Elibe, his lust for battle renewed. Owing to his poor sense of direction, however, Wallace is not seen by members of Caelin for over a year.

One year after he helped Lyn to regain control of Caelin, Wallace shows up by sheer chance in Bern at the same time that Eliwood and Hector's forces, along with some of Lyn's own forces, begin an assault on members of the Black Fang; initially joining the fray because he believed the Black Fang were "cowards" for attacking using the guise of fog, he joins the main lords's cause upon learning that his former comrades are part of their fighting force. While initially claiming that he showed up in Bern because he got lost, an A support with Lyn later reveals he actually traveled up the mountains of Bern in order to destroy the hideout of the Taliver Bandits that had killed Lyn's tribe; when confronted by Lyn over this decision, Wallace claimed he did so in order to prevent Lyn's hatred of them from corrupting her.

Wallace's effectiveness in-game and in all three available stories (Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector) varies strongly on how the player uses him, and what type of playthrough the player has performed. In Lyn's tale, Wallace acts as a Gotoh for inexperienced players, due to his high defense and offenses, as well being at a higher level than most available characters; however, this high level also limits potential growth by "stealing" experience.
Wallace's effectiveness in-game and in all three available stories (Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector) varies strongly on how the player uses him, and what type of playthrough the player has performed. In Lyn's tale, Wallace acts as a Gotoh for inexperienced players, due to his high defense and offenses, as well as being at a higher level than most available characters.

In Eliwood's and Hector's stories, Wallace's effectiveness is dependent on whether or not the player elected to use Lyn's hard mode or not. If the player uses Lyn's Normal Mode or skips Lyn's tale entirely, Wallace is often considered one of the worst characters in the game due to his poor base stats, especially compared to the other potential general, Oswin; his 8 speed is especially considered awful, owing to the fact that he spawns next to a Black Fang Sniper in the map he is recruited on.
In Eliwood's and Hector's stories, Wallace joins with poor bases, especially his 8 base speed. While he can be trained in Lyn Hard Mode, his high level means he will only gain a few levels at most, and his low speed growth means he will only gain a few points of speed at most. He also has poor mobility thanks to his class, and his high constitution makes him hard to rescue drop around. The only thing he is good at is at blocking off enemies at a choke point, however, there are only a few times where this is wanted, and his poor speed and resistance mean he is not that amazing at even this, and Hector and Oswin are also capable of this. Lastly, he does not join promoted if the player played Lyn Hard Mode without promoting him, making his already poor bases even worse.

If the player played through Lyn's Hard Mode before playing the next part of the game, Wallace becomes considerably more usable, to the point where he can rival the other potential general of Oswin; owing to a higher potential defence and speed than if he underwent his forced promotion, Wallace is considerably more durable and agile if he stays a knight and then is naturally promoted at level 20, as well as now having the potential to cap a few of his stats.

Comparison to Oswin
Comparison to Oswin
Wallace boasts higher strength, skill, and resistance growths, thus increasing his critical percentage slightly and making him slightly better at countering magic units. Like in all other facets, however, Wallace's benefits over Oswin vary over whether or not he comes as a General or Knight in the main story; in the former case, Oswin completely outclasses Wallace, while in the latter, Wallace can be just as effective. As such, it comes up to personal preference on who to use, as well as whether or not Oswin is a viable unit at that point in the game.
Oswin has better speed than Wallace, so he will be a better combat unit. Like in all other facets, however, Wallace's benefits over Oswin vary over whether or not he comes as a Knight or General in the main story; in the former case, Oswin completely outclasses Wallace, while in the latter, Wallace can be more effective than an unpromoted Oswin, which is a real possibility as there are only 2-3 Knight Crests available at this point.

Comparison to Geitz
Comparison to Geitz
Owing to the fact that the player can only get either Geitz or Wallace in one playthrough, there exists the choice that the player must make. Unlike Harken and Karel, however, there player cannot make a choice when the chapter begins; rather, the criterion for getting either varies with the previous chapters. As the chapter with Geitz requires all the player's lords to have an average level of around 16 to 17, Wallace is considered more practical to get, as making the lords have high levels at that point in the game is considered counterproductive due to their promotions still being far off, especially in the case of the main lord of the story.

Complicating the comparison between Geitz and Wallace is Lyn's tale; while Geitz will always appear as a prepromote, Wallace can appear as an ordinary knight, thus allowing for more improvement than Geitz. This comparison, however, itself can be complicated, as Geitz's base stats are superior to Wallace's and due to starting at level 3, Geitz has significant potential of his own. Furthermore, Geitz has the potential to eclipse in Wallace in Hard Mode regardless of external circumstances, due to getting the hard mode boost.

However, Geitz has much better base stats in every area besides defense and is in a better class, so even with the possibility of training Geitz will be the better unit.

Personality and character
Personality
Due to being a former knight looking to rekindle his old days of glory, Wallace comes across as a brash and confident man interested in battle and teaching those more inexperienced than him; as a knight, he is well-known among Caelin's recruits for his work "Manual of Knightly Prowess", a fact that he points out to both Lyn and Vaida, and what Wil originally refers to him as. In addition, Wallace frequently tries to prove his prowess as a teacher to other characters; with Wil, he tries to make the archer more powerful similar to his companions Kent and Sain, and when Lyn speaks about how some recruits of Caelin are unable to complete one objective of the guide, Wallace lambasts these recruits, under the claim that even defying one guideline of his work would be tantamount to ignoring the entire tome.

* There is an error in Wallace and Kent's C-rank support conversation in the English version of The Blazing Blade. In the conversation, Lyn's parents are said to have eloped 17 years prior to Eliwood/Hector's tale. While this is correct in the Japanese version, the correct figure according to the localization should be 20 years prior due to the localization increasing Lyn's age from 15 to 18.

Wallace (Japanese: ワレス Wallece) is a character in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Initially a retired knight in service to Caelin, Wallace later becomes a traveling mercenary after his adventures with Lyn.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Pre-game

Despite declaring loyalty to Caelin, Wallace had previously intentionally refused to follow orders declared by Lord Hausen; one of these events occurred when he was assigned to prevent Madelyn and Hassar from fleeing to Sacae. While Wallace did eventually catch up to them, he elected to leave the pair alone, claiming that the duo eluded him when he reported to Hausen. While he ended up getting locked in a dungeon for six months, he did not regret his decision.

In-game

Owing to his poor sense of direction, however, Wallace is not seen by the people of Caelin for over a year.

Post-game

After the battle against Nergal, Wallace again resumes wandering the land, though this time with plans to return to Caelin. Again, he loses his way and instead ends up in Ilia. Deciding he has had enough adventures, he elects to return to farming, this time on the cold soil of the land.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Comparison to Oswin

Oswin has better speed than Wallace, so he will be a better combat unit. Like in all other facets, however, Wallace's benefits over Oswin vary over whether or not he comes as a Knight or General in the main story; in the former case, Oswin completely outclasses Wallace, while in the latter, Wallace can be more effective than an unpromoted Oswin, which is a real possibility as there are only 2-3 Knight Crests available at this point.

Comparison to Geitz

Owing to the fact that the player can only get either Geitz or Wallace in one playthrough, there exists a choice that the player must make.

However, Geitz has much better base stats in every area besides defense and is in a better class, so even with the possibility of training Geitz will be the better unit.

Wallace is also highly competitive; in both of his appearances in the game, Wallace is put into action not only for an interest in help the lords, but to also help himself get back into the fray of war: in Lyn's tale, he elects to fight with Lyn not only to help save Caelin, but to also rekindle his fighting prowess, and in Eliwood and Hector's stories, he joins the battle the lords are in in order to cover for the sneak attacks of the Black Fang from the fog. In addition, with his supports with the wyvern lord Vaida, the two end up attempting to prove their superiority in combat against each other, culminating in two duels with neither emerging as the clear victor; Wallace himself notes that "No knight of Caelin runs from danger!!".

Wallace, the Caelin General

Eliwood/Hector's tale

Wallace, Crag of Caelin

Wallace: Bah... So, now I'm to be sent home like a squire...
Sain: You've been in retirement, sir. You simply tried too--
Wallace: Hold your tongue, boy! I know my place. Kent! Sain! Take care of the lady Lyndis! Or else!
Sain: Yes, milord!

Trivia

 • Wallace's poor sense of direction is referenced by the two chapters he appears in: in both cases, the map features fog of war.
 • Wallace is the only character in Lyn's tale who has the potential to not show up in either Eliwood's or Hector's tales.
 • There is an error in Wallace and Kent's C-rank support conversation in the English version of The Blazing Blade. In the conversation, Lyn's parents are said to have eloped 17 years prior to Eliwood/Hector's tale. While this is correct in the Japanese version, the correct figure according to the localization should be 20 years prior due to the localization increasing Lyn's age from 15 to 18.
