Thunder (Japanese: サンダー Thunder) is a basic tome which was introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in all games in the Fire Emblem series. It is a spell which strikes the foe with a bolt of lightning.
In games which feature the three separate schools of anima magic, it acts as the first "stage" in the hierarchy of thunder magic: it is the thunder counterpart to the Fire and Wind tomes, is the weakest and lowest-ranked of the thunder tomes, and is surpassed by the more powerful and advanced Elthunder, Arcthunder and Thoron. In games featuring anima magic, black magic or tomes in general only as a generalized weapon rank, Thunder typically acts as a low-level tome with no particularly distinct effects.
Thunder behaves somewhat differently in Gaiden and its remake, Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, where it also has greater range than most other spells and can strike targets as far as three spaces away from the user. Shadows of Valentia also has a second version of Thunder which is used only by the amiibo unit Robin, which instead has the usual black magic range.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
This article or section is a short summary of Thunder. SmashWiki features a more in-depth article. |
Thunder is Robin's neutral special move in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. When used, Robin hurls an electric projectile a great distance across the stage, and when charged up for long enough periods of time it will instead launch bolts of the more powerful thunder spells Elthunder, Arcthunder and Thoron. Like all of Robin's tome attacks, using the Thunder special move also sets the tome to be used as part of some of Robin's other non-special moves.
Like all of Robin's weapons, Thunder is governed by an emulation of the Fire Emblem durability system. It begins a match with 20 durability points, which are subtracted from until it runs out, at which point Thunder "breaks" and must be left to recharge for 10 seconds before it can be used again, during which the move will fail if the player attempts to use it. Each progressively higher charge consumes more durability points per use: Thunder takes 1, Elthunder 3, Arcthunder 5, and Thoron 8.
As with all special moves in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Thunder has two alternate variations which can be applied to Robin as customization options. These moves are found at random and collected during the course of the game's other modes, such as Classic Mode and Smash Run.
- Thunder+ (Japanese: 強化サンダー Strengthened Thunder) takes longer to charge, requiring 5 seconds of charge time to launch Thoron, but is more powerful. Its durability is also altered: it only has 10 durability points, and the amount of durability consumed by each spell is also altered (1 for Thunder, 2.5 for Elthunder, 4.5 for Arcthunder, and 10 for Thoron).
- Speed Thunder (Japanese: 速読サンダー Speed-Reading Thunder) both charges and travels faster, requiring only 2 seconds of charge time to launch Thoron, but deals less damage and knockback. Its durability parameters are unaltered.
Fire Emblem Cipher
Thunder is present as a skill on three cards in Fire Emblem Cipher, all of which depict Mages: B01-036N Daughter of Pontifex Miloah, Linde, B05-026N Determined Magic Youth, Lugh, and B09-026N Energetic Mage Girl, Mae. It is a manual-activation skill which, for a cost of flipping 1 bond card, gives the user a +10 attack increase until the end of the turn.
Trivia
- Robin's version of Thunder in Shadows of Valentia is internally called トロン (Thoron).
