Leif's forces approach Melfiye, otherwise called the Mirage Forest. Leif discusses strategy with his advisor, Dryas, who suggests they should move to the north-east without splitting up too much. In the meantime, the Loptian bishop residing in the forest – Linecock – discovers that Leif's army has entered the forest, and orders his subordinates to ambush them. He also prepares a Berserk staff to use in the upcoming battle.
As Leif's forces enter Melfiye Forest, the Loptian Bishop Linecock prepares to fight them with his Berserk staff. Sara appears to talk to him, but he orders her to go back to her chambers and tells her that her grandfather Manfroy will return from Conote soon.

Sara interrupts Linecock's preparations by appearing from the stronghold he guards. He orders her to return to the stronghold, but Sara says staying there is boring, and asks him about the whereabouts of her grandfather, Archbishop Manfroy. Linecock tells her that Manfroy is in Conote with Prince Julius and will return soon. The battle then ensues, and Sara senses whom Linecock is fighting. She asks Linecock if she can take a walk, which Linecock forbids her from, but she disobeys him and starts warping herself between different locations inside the forest anyway.
Once the battle begins, Sara starts wandering around the forest. If Leif talks to her, she decides to join him for reasons Leif does not understand. Salem can talk to Sara after she has been recruited, and if he does, he realizes that Sara can use the Kia staff.

During the battle, Salem can talk to Sara. He recognizes her as the granddaughter of Archbishop Manfroy, but she does not recognize him. She then tells him to go away, because she is looking for Salem's "master," who is supposedly calling out to her for help. Salem realizes that if this is indeed Lady Sara, she can use the staff of Kia, but their conversation does not continue.
During the battle, Homer can also talk to Shannam. He berates Shannam for working for the Loptian Order and wants to abandon him, but Shannam decides to tag along with Leif's army instead and joins it.

If Leif talks to Sara, she volunteers to help him, and tells him that she knows exactly who he is. She mentions her parents are dead, just like Leif's, and that her grandfather killed her father before she was born. Leif welcomes her into the army, feeling their meeting is important.
When Leif reaches the Loptian monastery in the center of the forest and defeats Linecock, Leif's advisors find Miranda inside and bring her to him. She blames Leif for her imprisonment, as she has been a hostage due to her father helping to shelter Leif from the Empire. Dryas instead blames Miranda's father, because he did not help fight the Thracians when Leonster was attacked and therefore "reaped what he sowed." Leif breaks the argument and apologizes for Miranda's situation, explaining that he did not know she was a hostage. She in turn explains that she has only been in this monastery for one year - before then, she had been in Ulster under the watch of Count Conomor, but the insurrections in Tahra and Leonster prompted the Empire to relocate her. She then says she wants to reclaim Ulster and asks Leif to help her before joining his army.

Homer can talk to Shannam during the battle. When he does, he berates Shannam for working for the Loptian Order, to which Shannam responds he has no choice because he is penniless. Homer claims he does not care about what Shannam does, and plans to leave him there, but Shannam decides to tag along. Homer then complains that Shannam is nothing like the prince he impersonates, Shannan.

When Leif reaches the Loptian Order's monastery in the center of the forest, he can wait on the throne tile. If he does, his advisor August finds Miranda being held captive inside the monastery and frees her. At first, Leif does not remember Miranda, and she reminds him that she is the Princess of Ulster and berates him for forgetting her. Then she blames Leif for her situation, saying her father lost Ulster because he sheltered Leif in the prince's youth. Miranda was turned over to the Empire as a hostage, as punishment for her father protecting Leif.

Dryas interjects, claiming the Empire was always planning to conquer Ulster, and that Miranda's father deserved the punishment for not sending troops to Leonster's aid during Thracia's invasion. Leif admonishes him for taking things too far, and Dryas apologizes – then, Leif apologizes to Miranda for her situation. Miranda admits she has only recently been held inside the monastery – before then, she was kept in Ulster in relative comfort where Count Conomor watched over her; however, when rebellion erupted in Tahra and Leonster, she was moved to the Mirage Forest's monastery to prevent potential rebellion in Ulster. After telling her story, Miranda demands Leif allow her to join his army so she might reclaim Ulster and give meaning to her father's death. Leif silently accepts.

Eventually, the battle ends, and August apologizes to Leif for not realizing that the Mirage Forest contained a Loptian monastery. Leif tells August he should not feel guilty over it, because he is not all-knowing; Leif admits that getting through the forest was a difficult task, but his forces were ultimately successful.

The Dark Forest (Japanese: 暗黒の森 Dark Forest) is the sixteenth chapter of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. This is the first of two chapters on the "B" route; in order to play this chapter, Leif must have headed headed south towards Melfiye Forest in the previous chapter.

Plot

Main article: The Dark Forest/Script

As Leif's forces enter Melfiye Forest, the Loptian Bishop Linecock prepares to fight them with his Berserk staff. Sara appears to talk to him, but he orders her to go back to her chambers and tells her that her grandfather Manfroy will return from Conote soon.

Once the battle begins, Sara starts wandering around the forest. If Leif talks to her, she decides to join him for reasons Leif does not understand. Salem can talk to Sara after she has been recruited, and if he does, he realizes that Sara can use the Kia staff.

During the battle, Homer can also talk to Shannam. He berates Shannam for working for the Loptian Order and wants to abandon him, but Shannam decides to tag along with Leif's army instead and joins it.

Beginning log

Following August's advice, Leif led his troops south of the main road. However, to get to Leonster through this route, the Liberation Army would have to make its way through the thick forests of Melfiye. Why this was called the "Dark Forest"... Why travelers avoided this region... Leif was about to find out soon enough...

Units are arranged based on their position in deployment order after Leif.

Locations and destinations of warp tiles.

This map features warp tiles. When a unit waits on a warp tile, they are teleported to a different tile. If the unit uses an action other than wait that ends their turn—such as attacking or using an item—on the warp tile or another unit is present on the destination tile, that unit is not teleported.

The locations and destinations of warp tiles in this map are:
