The First Rain of May (Japanese: 5月の雨 Rain of May) is the seventeenth chapter of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. This is the second of two chapters on the "B" route; in order to play this chapter, Leif must have headed south towards Melfiye Forest in Chapter 15.
Plot
- Main article: The First Rain of May/Script
Leif's forces reach Leonster and take note of the ballistae protecting the castle. In the meantime, Amalda discusses Gustaf's actions with Palman. Gustaf has ordered to initiate child hunts in the region despite not being ordered to do so, and Amalda's admonishment of his decision got her relegated to guard duty. Palman notes that child hunts would have begun eventually, because they were Emperor Arvis's idea, and Amalda expresses her disbelief that Arvis would do this, especially since she had wanted to be one of his knights.
The battle begins. During the battle, Leif may meet a village elder in one of the villages surrounding Leonster, who volunteers to help him by sending villagers to take ballista shots so that his forces can advance unimpeded. Leif is initially appalled by the idea, but the elder reiterates that the regime had taken everything from them and they are all willing to die for the prince. Leif's soldiers can also meet a man in the village on the southwestern cliff who offers to open the eastern castle gate for 20,000 Gold.
In the end, Leif's forces seize Leonster and proceed to plan for taking the interior. The general commanding the remaining forces is Gustaf, a close associate of King Bloom. The other commander turns out to be Xavier - a former general of Leonster who defected, and whom Dryas calls a traitor. However, the village elder whom Leif met speaks up in favor of Xavier, explaining that he defected for the sake of the villagers. The elder also mentions that Xavier has eight adjutants whom he is close to and whose families have been imprisoned inside the castle, so he cannot turn on the Empire now.

Units are arranged based on their position in deployment order after Leif.
If the player visits the westernmost house with at least 20,000 gold, they will be given the option to pay the villager 20,000 gold and receive aid in breaking down the gates to the northern wall. If the player accepts his aid, the gates will be removed when a player units acts in front of them (column 22, row 8 for the eastern gate; and column 16, row 2 for the northern one). If the player rejects his aid, the house closes, and nothing else occurs. If the player cannot afford his aid, nothing occurs, but the house does not close and can be re-visited.
Additionally, the northern gate opens when a player unit acts in the northwest part of the map (columns 1–7, rows 1–7).

If Leif visits one of the houses (except the westernmost house), the player will be given the choice to either accept or reject the villagers' help. If the player accepts the villagers' help, NPCs will appear from the houses on the NPC phases of each turn after Leif visits. Up to sixteen NPCs can be present on the map at a time, and they re-appear (and appear initially) in the following order:
- a Fighter with a Hand Axe from the middle untraversable house (column 9, row 16)
- a male Sword Fighter from the southern untraversable house (column 4, row 24)
- a male Sword Fighter from the left second-northernmost house (column 10, row 15)
- a male Sword Fighter from the northernmost untraversable house (column 14, row 13)
- a Fighter with an Iron Axe from the left-middle house (column 9, row 18)
- a Fighter with an Iron Axe from the northernmost house (column 15, row 14)
- a female Bow Fighter from the second-westernmost house (column 3, row 22)
- a Priest from the upper-west house (column 4, row 20)
- a male Bow Fighter from the lower-middle house (column 10, row 19)
- a female Sword Fighter from the right-middle house (column 13, row 18)
- a Mage from the right second-northernmost house (column 12, row 15)
If the player rejects the villagers' help, no NPCs appear. Regardless of if their help is accepted or rejected, every house (except the westernmost one) closes after Leif visits one of them. If a unit other than Leif visits a house, no NPCs appear and the houses do not close.
