The chapter opens with a flashback to 2 years ago. Eirika has just beaten Lyon in a round of fencing. The defeat leaves Lyon embarrassed by his lack of strength - especially when compared to Eirika and Ephraim - leading him to believe that he is not worthy of being the crown prince of Grado. Eirika manages to lift Lyon’s spirits by assuring him that his compassion makes him plenty strong enough to be worthy of the title of Emperor and that his kind heart will surely save them someday. Lyon thanks Eirika for her kind words and swears to do all he can despite his physical weakness. Lyon then asks Eirika to accept something, however, the flashback ends before it is revealed what Lyon gave her on that day.
In the present, Eirika’s group is marching towards Jehanna Hall to break Grado’s siege. As they approach their destination, Seth reports the current intel on the status of Jehanna. Queen Ismaire has apparently been captured by Grado already and the one leading the invading army is indeed Lyon. Despite the risk imposed by the enemy force and the potential that Lyon may attack them with his formidable Dark magic, Innes notes that they must rescue Queen Ismaire, no matter the cost. Despite her hesitance at raising her sword against a dear friend, Eirika agrees with Innes and commands her forces to attack the enemy.
Meanwhile, inside the castle, Ismaire confronts Carlyle, her most trusted adviser who sold out his country to Grado. Ismaire struggles to conceive of a reason for such a fiercely loyal man to do such a thing and demands he explain himself. Carlyle tells his queen that he did it for her. Ever since he met her twenty years ago in the palace, he has been bewitched by her beauty. Carlyle buried those feelings deep within his heart so as to not betray his oath to his King; however, his admiration and love for Ismaire festered within his heart and transformed into possessiveness, leading him to decide to secure the affection of his queen no matter the cost. Ismaire upon hearing his selfish lust for her affection, immediately rejects him, chiding him for believing that the death of her people and country could bring her any feeling of pleasure. Soon after, Caellach and Lyon enter the throne room. Caellach praises Carlyle for a job well done. Carlyle tells Caellach he is free to do as he pleases so long as Ismaire is his, however, Caellach informs his confidant that there has been a change of plans and takes Ismaire as his hostage. Caellach assures Carlyle that he will have his reward as soon as Ismaire helps him locate the Scared Stone of Jehanna. In the meantime, Caellach asks Carlyle to keep a cool head and handle Eirika’s forces lest he lose what he has risked so much for. Lyon briefly attempts to demand Caellach cease his deeds at once but quickly doubles over in pain before he can finish, which Caellach takes as a sign to continue as he was.
Elsewhere in the castle, L’Arachel’s erstwhile traveling companion, Rennac, has found himself working for Grado as a mercenary. Rennac expects the soldiers of Grado to easily dispatch of the enemy, allowing him to collect his pay without even needing to fight. However, despite the good fortune he has happened upon, Rennac cannot help but feel uneasy. As the battle progresses Rennac discovers why he could not feel at ease earlier: He was sensing the presence of L’Arachel. Before he has the chance to flee, L’Arachel calls out to Rennac. L’Arachel obliviously remarks about how amazing it is that Rennac managed to wander off to such a place and commands him to return to his duties of escorting her. Rennac refuses to accompany her, informing her that he has found new employment that is not as stingy as her and does not ask him to risk his life so often. L’Arachel asserts that the joy from doing good should be sufficient compensation in addition to the wages she has payed and insists Rennac hurry along. Rennac, recognizing his powerlessness in the situation, relents and joins L’Arachel once again.
After Carlyle has been slain and the throne seized, Caellach reaches a secluded room with his captive, Lyon accompanying him as well, and demands Ismaire relinquish the Sacred Stone to him. Ismaire pretends that she does not know the location of the stone, but Caellach knows she is in possession of it as Lyon observed her taking the stone from Jehanna’s altar by means of his magic. Ismaire still refuses, prompting Caellach to fatally wound her, despite the protests of Lyon. Caellach quickly recovers the stone from the dying Ismaire and shatters it. Lyon hangs over Ismaire unsure of what to do. Caellach advises that he deliver the final blow to put her out of her misery, though Lyon strongly refuses to do such a thing. Lyon’s refusal clearly disappoints Caellach and before leaving, he recommends that the prince flee as Eirika’s army will likely be upon them soon.
In the throne room, Eirika and her allies quickly set out to find Ismaire, leaving the Renaian princess alone. She is about to follow suit when Lyon teleports in front of her, seemingly on accident. Before Lyon can flee, Eirika pleads with him to stay and talk with her. At Eirika’s behest, Lyon tarries for a moment and apologizes to Eirika for being unable to prevent Grado from invading Renais. Lyon clearly wants to say more, but insists that he cannot stay in Jehanna’s palace any longer nor can he tell her any more than what little he has. Eirika decides to believe in her friend and allows him to go. Before teleporting away, Lyon assures Eirika that despite his inability to stop this war, he will always be Eirika’s friend.
After Lyon departs, Innes informs Eirika that they have found Ismaire and they rush to her side. When they arrive, Seth gravely informs them that she will soon pass away as her wounds are far too grievous to heal. In her final moments, Ismaire calls out for her son, Joshua. She apologizes to her son for failing to raise him as a mother should and prioritizing her duties as queen over him. As she utters this apology, Joshua comes to her side to comfort Isamire in her final moments. Joshua gives his own apology for foolishly abandoning her and letting this happen. In her final moments, Ismaire informs the group that the Sacred Stone of Jehanna has been destroyed and tells them to destroy a “Dark Stone.” Ismaire also gives Joshua the Scared Twin Relics of Audhulma and Excalibur.
Once the group receives the final words and gifts of Ismaire, Joshua explains that he left the palace more than ten years ago. He sought to live amongst the people and understand them better so he could properly rule them, so he abandoned his identity and wandered the nations of Magvel. As Innes expected, Seth reports that two armies led by Caellach and Valter are closing in on their location. Eirika is left in a difficult situation, they can no longer use Jehanna hall to dig in for a siege and they have two of Grado’s renowned generals closing in on them.
