Victims of War (Japanese: 憎悪の泥濘 Mire of Hatred) is the sixth chapter of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Eirika continues her journey south. She witnesses one of the horrors of war inflicted on the innocent and a secret held closely by the royal bloodline of Renais.

Eirika continues her southward journey to Grado in search of Ephraim. She is spurred further by the news she received from Natasha regarding Grado's intent to destroy the Sacred Stones. Eirika opts to travel through a more remote region of Grado to avoid more attention; however, she is located by a small Grado force regardless, having been followed after the clash at Serafew.
Riev and Novala discuss their course of action; they must capture Eirika and her bracelet. Novala reassures Riev that he has a "certain something" from Renais that will guarantee his victory. Riev is placated with this news, and departs, saying he has a mountain of tasks to attend to. Novala is off-put by so plainly being called a servant, and, after Riev's departure, expresses that he will take Riev's place at their master's side after his successful capture of Eirika.
Later, Novala appears before Eirika and her companions and demands Eirika's bracelet; he tells Eirika that Ephraim was defeated and rots in Renvall's dungeons, but Eirika refuses to believe him. Novala then displays a prisoner, a child from Renais, and demands Eirika's bracelet for the child's life; Eirika then surrenders her bracelet to Novala, despite Seth's protests. Novala then demands that they surrender their weapons as well; however, Seth directly refuses. Novala decides to have the hostages transported to a nearby valley, where bael are said to live, to Eirika's and the villagers' horror. Eirika berates Novala for his actions, but Novala teleports to the other end of the valley with the girl; he then sends the girl and another citizen to an isolated part of the valley to be eaten by a bael. The battle then begins.
Eirika is successful in defeating Novala's underlings and Novala himself. If the three villagers survived the chapter, they thank Eirika, and one gifts her an Orion's Bolt. Seth then approaches Eirika, having recovered her bracelet from Novala, and tells her the significance of the bracelet: it is half of the key used to unlock the chamber that Renais's Sacred Stone is hidden in, Ephraim's bracelet being the other half. Seth is concerned by Grado desiring Eirika's bracelet, as this information is supposed to only be known to the Royal family of Renais. Eirika, feeling that time is of the essence, immediately resumes her journey south to rescue Ephraim.

Strategy

Send Vanessa to the east as fast as possible to guard the civilians; they will die without intervention. It is also possible to kill Novala before the Bael is close enough to kill the villagers; this generally would involve ignoring most of the enemies and making a beeline for Novala with Seth.
The soldier with the Halberd will always drop the last weapon in his inventory, and he will most commonly attack with the Halberd so you only get a rather common Iron Axe. To counter this and get the valuable Halberd, have Franz and/or Seth bum rush him before he can attack.
Trivia
- In the prototype, Novala simply kills the child and other villagers after Eirika surrenders her bracelet.
