Plot

Main article: Creeping Darkness/Script

Ewan leads Eirika's group through the mountain pass; a thick fog has descended as they approach a seemingly abandoned fortress. Innes asks Ewan if the fort is currently in use, and points out a barely audible, mysterious sound coming from it. They continue to hear the sound, leading Innes to conclude that they have been spotted by the monsters inside the fort. Tethys—or, if she is dead, Innes—tells Ewan to get somewhere safe; Ewan attempts to protest but does eventually leave. L'Arachel and Dozla arrive at the same abandoned fortress, seeking a place to stay for the night; when Dozla informs L'Arachel of the nearby monsters, she is delighted to have a chance to "destroy th[o]se foul things".

In battle, Eirika can speak to L'Arachel. Eirika suggests L'Arachel get to saety, but L'Arachel insists on continuing to fight, and they agree to work together. L'Arachel can then inform Dozla that they will be working with Eirika to defeat the monsters.

Once the monsters have been routed, Eirika thanks L'Arachel for her assistance. L'Arachel realizes that she does not even know Eirika's name, and Eirika introduces herself. L'Arachel recognizes her as the princess of Renais, and assumes that the princess must be lost to have ended up in Carcino of all places. Eirika corrects L'Arachel and informs her of her task to protect Rausten from Grado's imperial army. After hearing of her task, L'Arachel insists on accompanying Eirika.

Ewan continues to guide Eirika's group to his teacher, Saleh. They eventually reach his house and meet him face-to-face. Eirika and Saleh recognize each other from Serafew when Saleh was searching for a girl with indigo hair. Ewan asks Saleh to guide Eirika's group to Caer Pelyn; Saleh accepts Ewan's request as he was headed the same way to complete a mission he recently accepted. Before they depart, Saleh advises they rest for the night, to which Eirika and Innes agree. Ewan, wanting to be helpful, decides to depart ahead of the group and inform the elder of their arrival.

The next morning, Eirika and her group depart for Caer Pelyn but are interrupted by Glen of the Imperial Three. Glen announces to Eirika that Emperor Vigarde has assigned him to take her out in retaliation for the alleged massacre of innocents at Port Kiris and the rebellion she led at Carcino. Eirika denies the accusations; Innes angrily calls Glen an idiot for believing Vigarde's obvious lies and explains that Eirika entered Carcino with her small force to rescue him. Eirika clarifies to Glen that she does not wish to fight him but will if she must. Glen decides to return to question Vigarde, letting Eirika proceed. After Eirika leaves, Valter approaches Glen, seeing him allow Eirika to leave. Glen tells Valter to move so he can return to the capital. Valter refuses and begins to rant about the anger and indignation he suffered at the hands of Glen and Duessel, asserting that his desire for revenge has kept him alive. Valter then attacks and kills Glen, and sends his soldiers to silence Glen's as he muses to himself over his craving for endless battle and war.

Trivia

Glen and Valter, two red units, engaging in combat.
  • In the 040531_2253 build, this chapter's map was originally used for Chapter 6. When Chapter 6 was revamped with a new map the old map was used for this chapter instead.
  • This chapter, alongside Phantom Ship, was possibly one of the last chapters added to the game in development, being the only two chapters completely absent from the 040531_2253 build. This may also be the reason it does not have a corresponding world map location, instead occurring between locations, as the world map was already laid out in essentially its final form even in the very early build.
    • This is also supported by the fact that Creeping Darkness and Phantom Ship are the only two chapters with their titles listed out of order, being at the end of the list internally.
  • The cutscene at the end of the chapter is the only instance in the Fire Emblem series where two red units engage each other in combat without one of them being driven berserk.
