“ | Me, I can’t imagine giving my all for a gig that doesn’t pay. No one asked you to solve this mess— let alone paid you—yet here you are. Seems like your job is a tougher one than I’m willing to take on. Makes me wonder if the gods are really worth all that trouble. | ” | — Kamui, to Celica. |

Kamui (Japanese: カムイ Kamui) is a mercenary from a foreign land in the service of Valbar.[1]
Fire Emblem Gaiden
Role
Kamui is a fairly early game mercenary for Celica's route.

If the character's stats are higher than their promoted class' base stats, they will not receive any bonus; however, if all stats are higher, then they will receive +1 to HP.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Kamui reprises his role in the remake.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Kamui is a Mercenary who joins Celica's army in Act 2. He has decent base stats which allow him to contribute from the moment he joins, and he can promote to Myrmidon after only four levels; despite Kamui starting at level 3, the Myrmidon promotion only requires level 7, which is one of the lowest requirements in the game. Once promoted, Kamui's stats will improve further and he will eventually become one of the better combat units in the army.
As a Myrmidon, Kamui will be able to promote to Dread Fighter at level 10 as his third-tier promotion, which is among the best classes in Shadows of Valentia. Not only does it have a low level requirement and high strength and speed bases, but it has Resistance +5 and Apotrope—the latter of which halves damage taken from black magic—which is useful against the many dangerous enemy black magic users in Shadows of Valentia, such as Witches, Arcanists and Cantors. Additionally, Dread fighter has equal movement to Cavalier, but has lower movement costs for rough terrain than mounted units, potentially out-moving them on the swamps in Celica's portion of Act 4.
As a Dread Fighter, Kamui can promote to Villager at level 10, allowing him to enter a new class line or level up repeatedly through Mercenary. This is not necessary for the main game, as the stats of enemies are not high enough to warrant sacrificing high movement and resistance for additional level-ups; however, it may be useful for Thabes Labyrinth, which has much stronger enemies than Duma Temple. Alternately, Kamui can be made to promote from Villager to Archer, sacrificing the high resistance of Dread Fighter for access to the Killer Bow and Hunter's Volley.
Personality and character
Like many characters in Gaiden he has little dialogue and characterization. He appears to be fairly relaxed, and is happy to join Celica on her journey after she helps him and Valbar.
His personality is expanded upon in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Kamui is portrayed as laid-back and carefree, with a love of money. He enjoys mercenary work for the sense of freedom and adventure it provides. Kamui also has a deathly fear of necrodragons.[2] He claims to normally not care about what others think of him, with being greeted sarcastically by Leon being the exception.[3]

Ending
Gaiden
If Jesse survived
Together with Jesse's group he works hard towards patching up the new country.
If Jesse did not survive
In the former territory of Grieth, he built a new country. Afterwards, he became known as the Desert Mercenary.
Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
If Jesse survived
Intrigued by Jesse's idea, Kamui helped to found a kingdom of mercenaries, and lived there happily for a time. In the end, however, his wanderlust prevailed—one day he went for a stroll and simply vanished, never to be seen again.
If Jesse did not survive
Kamui established a new kingdom of, and for, mercenaries in what was once Grieth's territory. Relations with Valentia were favorable, with Kamui often aiding the king in times of need. In later life, his efforts earned him fame and respect as "the Steel Amidst the Sand."

Trivia
- Kamui shares his name with the Japanese default name of Fates's avatar.
- On April Fools's Day in 2017, a fake Fire Emblem game called Fire Emblem: Battle of Revolution was given a page on Nintendo's website, featuring Fire Emblem Gaiden style graphics. Valbar, Kamui, and Leon were featured prominently, appearing in the background art and receiving portraits drawn in the style of the NES games.[4]
