Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Clanne is one of Engage's default spellcasters, joining you as a level one Mage. His particular specialization into speed grants him a rather notable privilege amongst his cohorts, as barring Pandreo, none of the other spellcasters are naturally able to reach the speed tiers he does once invested into.

This emphasis on his inherent speed, something not reliably matched by most units that do not have an extremely high personal speed base, grants him a unique advantage that allows him to bypass what would otherwise appear to be a rather crippling flaw: his magic possessing only a 10% (+25% from the Mage class) growth. While this might indicate to some that this means he should never even touch a tome for more than one chapter, the reality is that while Clanne's strength growth is rather high, at 35% personal growth, his personal base is simply too low to be worth considering, especially with his rather below average build. Instead, utilizing his natural proficiencies in tomes and swords to promote into Mage Knight is a much simpler, less resource intensive, and overall more effective method to making Clanne function.

The question with Clanne, of course, is how the player must go about solving his damage problem. There are numerous means of doing so, from inheriting Magic +2 from Celica early on with use of SP-increasing books to further his gain in such stats, to utilizing Instruct on Dragon or Mystical units, as well as Emblems such as Byleth and Eirika. By far the most effective method, however, is to utilize Celica. She is far and away the most reliable source of improved magical damage in Engage thanks to the fact her bond 1 weapon, Seraphim, is not only effective against Corrupted, which comprise the vast majority of enemies in the lategame chapters, utilizing certain augment materials, its might can be improved from 6, which already places it above Bolganone in terms of raw attack power when fighting Corrupted, all the way to 10, which after the effective damage multiplier becomes 30 might, the absolute strongest tome in the game bar none and more than capable of absolutely eviscerating anything it touches. With its extremely low weight of 4, on top of a naturally high hit of 90, on top of Clanne's naturally good dexterity, it makes him extremely reliable in doubling and netting kills even on speedier, and thus dodgier, enemies throughout the game.

With all that being said, Clanne is not without flaw. His naturally low base level combined with Engage's harsh experience gain leads to him struggling to earn levels in the early chapters, and though his naturally high speed helps alleviate some of these issues in securing kills, it still does not really leave him much opportunity to truly surpass any of the later magical units. Still, his early join time and fairly consistent ability to double make for solid arguments should a player choose to invest into him.

Personality

Clanne is calm, and is a fan of Alear.[1]

Endings

Calm Steward Clanne
Clanne succeeded Vander as a steward. As he grew older, his levelheaded demeanor was likened to Vander's own.
He so revered the Divine Dragon Monarch that, when it was time to select the 34th generation of stewards, he tested candidates on their love for Alear.

Divine Dragon Alear & Calm Steward Clanne
Alear became the new Divine Dragon Monarch. His/Her bonds with the rulers of each nation resulted in lasting peace.
Clanne served as his/her steward and closest ally for many years to come. Even as he grew older, his talent for making pickles never declines.
