Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Vander is the early prepromote, highly powerful early-game unit of Engage and plays that role straight to a tee. He comes with high movement and solid bulk compared to most of the early game crew with his 10 base defense and 40 HP, and his offense is just good enough to help set up kills for the player's other units but not good enough to one-shot unless he crits. This spread of stats is good for carrying the early starting crew through the opening chapters since most of them are knocked out in 2 hits, making Vander perfect for baiting enemies and helping your other units get some experience. He makes the first 5 or 6 maps of the game much easier, after which the other units eventually start to surpass him. He'll still contribute enough to earn a deployment slot until halfway through the Brodia arc around chapter 8 where it's typically recommended to drop him.

His only issues in his role is that his hit rates can be a bit shaky and his personal skill, Alabaster Duty, isn't conducive to setting up kills. The first problem is easy to solve - one can engrave a hit bonus on one of his axes or inherit Hit +10 from Sigurd, which would typically be a waste of SP on units the player plans on using long term, but since Vander usually isn't one of those anyway, he won't have much need for the SP. His personal skill makes him more likely to crit when next to Alear, which is more of a hindrance than a help since his role is primarily to set up kills and it doesn't increase his crit enough to able to rely on. This means Vander will occassionally crit and nab a kill the player doesn't intend to if they're not mindful of his positioning, but letting him get a stray kill here and there won't significantly hamper the development of other units.

As far as long term potential goes, Vander does not offer much. His growths actually are not as abysmal as one might expect, but he cannot take full advantage of it because of his high internal level. Since he is considered to have promoted at level 15, Vander barely gets any experience until he's already falling behind the player's other units, and once those units start promoting, he simply cannot catch up. If the player is really bent on using Vander long term, something like Griffin Knight where he can contribute through staff utility would the best bet. Otherwise, he is best off being used for what his archetype does best: helping players get through the early game chapters and train their units, and then retiring to the bench once they have built a competent enough army that can hold its own without him.

Personality and character

Vander is serious and strict, and puts his role as guardian first.[2]

Battle quotes

Corrupted Luemra: It's been a little while, Vander.
Vander: Queen Lumera, I cannot believe we have a chance to speak once more. I apologize for failing in my duty as your protector. And I pray you'll forgive me for defeating you here.
Corrupted Lumera: Vander, you are my child's knight—you must fill that role as best you can. Attack me with all your might.
Vander: ...I wish we could returned to that day, before all of this. If we could go back there, to that courtyard, I would... No. Even if I might take that selfish moment, my duty stands. I must stop you here, today. Prepare yourself, Queen Lumera!

— Vander fighting Corrupted Lumera in Chapter 25.
Divine One... Should I fall here, know I am proud to die as your guardian knight.
— Vander in Chapter 26.
