While the point of the Assassin is to give Thieves a dangerous offensive side, Rogues are essentially designed just to be "Thieves, but better", built to simply become more proficient at looting chests and stealing from enemies. Their speed is extremely high, giving them an excellent chance to be able to steal from most enemies, and they also retain excellent skill but poor strength and defensive stats, making their use in serious combat a dangerous choice. In emergencies they can wield swords in The Sacred Stones, or knives in Radiant Dawn, to defend themselves, but they are best left well away from combat unless an item needs to be stolen. The Sacred Stones further adds to their utility by giving them the Pick skill, allowing them to open doors and chests without relying on the limited uses of lockpicks, although Radiant Dawn has all Thief-related classes operate without lockpicks by default.

The Rogue (Japanese: ローグ Rogue) is an advanced class which was introduced in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, and appears only in it and Radiant Dawn. They are an advanced form of the Thief, originally introduced as an alternative to the Assassin, and in Radiant Dawn they can promote again to the Whisper class.
