The Ranger (Japanese: フォレストナイト Forrestknight) is an advanced mounted class debuting in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, which has experienced slightly varying roles across its three appearances in the Fire Emblem series. In its original incarnation in Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, it is the promoted version of the Free Knight, exclusively wields swords, and is a counterpart to its fellow weapon-specific advanced mounted classes: Bow Knight, Duke Knight and Great Knight. In Thracia 776, Rangers are forced to dismount to enter buildings or participate in chapters set entirely indoors; unlike the Great or Duke Knights, they retain access to their usual weapon type while dismounted.
The second and most recent version of the Ranger is that of The Sacred Stones, in which it functions identically to the earlier Nomadic Trooper and later incarnations of the Horseman and Bow Knight: it wields both swords and Bows, and is a class change option for both the Archer and Mercenary.
