Lord

For a similar class from Genealogy of the Holy War known by this name in fan translations, see Junior Lord.

The Lord (Japanese: ロード Lord) is a prominent class introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Most of the main characters of the Fire Emblem series are of the Lord class, and it is the most important class in the game in terms of completing most chapter objectives. Lords are generally defined as a a young member of a noble family and the son/daughter of the head of the noble family in question, either a prince/princess or the child of a duke or similar; "Lord" is treated as a unisex class name, applied as equally to female characters (Lyn, Eirika and Lucina) as it is to males.

In gameplay, the Lord's function is somewhat similar to that of the king in a game of chess: they are the leader of the army, and to be defeated in battle is to fail the chapter and get a Game Over. Conversely, Lords (or Lord-like units) are the only characters with the ability to seize thrones and gates and complete chapters with such objectives, and typically are the wielders of powerful weapons required to successfully combat final bosses. The general statistical build of a Lord varies depending on the game and character in question, but as a rule they are well-rounded in their stats other than the individual's obvious strongest field; they also typically possess higher luck than most others, and mostly share the rather low resistance endemic to non-magic units. Characterised as being inexperienced yet having great potential, their stats will almost always start off somewhat low, but with their typical high growth rates will improve quickly and become potent fighters. The majority of Lords wield only swords, but occasionally Lords wielding non-sword weapons appear, like Hector (axes) and Ephraim (lances); almost all Lords have exclusive access to a special weapon which is effective against both armored and mounted units, most famously the recurring Rapier weapon.

In all but one appearance, the Lord is a base class - the exception is Path of Radiance, where Ike's base class is Ranger and he promotes to Lord, symbolic of him being knighted and joining the nobility. Typically, a Lord's advanced class is unique to it, if not in name then in appearance and stat build. The most common promoted Lord class title is Great Lord, shared by Roy, Hector, Eirika, Ephraim, Chrom, Lucina, Rowan, and Lianna. Other promoted forms of the Lord include the Knight Lord for Eliwood, the Blade Lord for Lyn, and the Prince for Leif. In his four appearances in the Archanea tetralogy, Marth does not promote; in the two Nintendo DS remakes, Shadow Dragon and New Mystery of the Emblem, the Lord is classified as a special class with an increased level cap of 30 as compensation.

Five games do not feature the Lord class as a playable class: Gaiden (and its remake Shadows of Valentia), Genealogy of the Holy War, Radiant Dawn and Fates. All five instead give their lead characters classes which are the Lord in all but name, sometimes with some alternative utility; such classes are colloquially called "Lord-like" or generically also called "Lords". The classes for the Gaiden heroes, Alm and Celica, are Fighter and Priestess respectively. Seliph's class in Genealogy of the Holy War is Junior Lord, literally a conventional Lord with a slightly different name. Micaiah of Radiant Dawn is a Light Mage; in his reappearance, Ike starts off as a Hero, ostensibly a promoted class, and throughout the game several other characters all act as the Lord character of at least one chapter, and almost all have conventional classes. For example, Elincia, who is an acting lord in both Tellius games, has the classes of Princess Crimea and Queen. Corrin in Fates starts in the Nohr Prince or Nohr Princess class, depending on their gender; the standard Lord class does, however, appear as a non-playable class belonging to the NPC Chrom's class in a downloadable content episode.

Trivia

  • Awakening is the first and only game to feature a Lord as an enemy or boss outside of multiplayer modes, as a result of both "Marth"'s appearance as the boss of Chapter 4 and the potential for a Chrom or Lucina Mirage to become a Lord in Paralogue 22.
