Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
Role
Hatanaka initially appears after the joint concert SIV-LIVE, seemingly trapped by hostile Mirages in the Idolasphere. Itsuki's group rescues him and tell him to escape, and due to the Idolasphere's effects on the memories of non-Mirage-Masters, he supposedly does not remember the encounter clearly.
However, he refuses to leave it at that, and investigates Mirage activity in Tokyo. This often causes him to run into Itsuki's group, who try to throw him off the trail for his own safety, but he pursues.
After the incident at Daitou TV Station, Hatanaka informs the group of Mahiro Tsurumi, the new president at Daiba TV who suspiciously has no public background in the industry.
Later, during the Tokyo-wide event Enter-Kingdom, both Hatanaka and Tsurumi are involved in its organization. A large amount of Performa is gathered at the Cosmic Egg stadium, where Hatanaka reveals that he has been working with Gharnef to revive the Shadow Dragon, Medeus. Hatanaka claims that heroes battling the dragon for the fate of the world would be the ultimate entertainment, and that he is committed to making it happen.
In the Area of Memories, as Itsuki's group gathers the souls of heroes to perform the Opera of Light against the Shadow Dragon, Hatanaka pre-emptively takes Marth's soul to prevent the Opera from happening. When he confronts the group, he willingly sacrifices all of his Performa to Gharnef, on the condition that the Shadow Dragon is revived. Hatanaka laughs maniacally and collapses after doing so, presumably dead.
After Itsuki's group defeat Gharnef in battle, the Mirage sacrifices both Marth's soul and his own to complete the Shadow Dragon's revival. Itsuki's group is left to defeat the Shadow Dragon on their own, though with a hope that performing the Opera of Light close to the dragon may still cause Marth's soul to cooperate with them.
Personality and character
Hatanaka is very well-known in the Japanese entertainment industry, and has a penchant for large-scale productions with grandiose special effects, such as artificial rain and meteor effects as well as a floating stage during Kiria's performance at SIV-LIVE. This is to his downfall, as it draws him to the supposed spectacle that battling the Shadow Dragon would create.
He has a very laid-back demeanor, often cracking jokes during conversations, though can also become very serious and inquisitive when investigating something. He is shown to be very skilled at manipulating events in his favor whilst hiding his own involvement, as well as predicting the moves of his enemies and feeding them misinformation. After revealing his involvement with Gharnef, he appears to have gone insane, with maniacal laughter and a twisted smile.
