Edelgard: You know, I don't believe I ever asked your feelings about this war. On the surface, it must seem as though we took Fódlan's fragile peace in our hand and shattered it into a thousand pieces.
Shez: What, is it deep conversation time now? Where'd that come from?
Edelgard: It's merely that we've never discussed the matter. And you are in a fairly unique position amidst this all. I thought you might be able to provide some perspective on how an outsider views the actions Adrestia has taken.

Shez: The way I see it, you just did what you had to. You talk about peace, but it's not like people weren't already getting slaughtered for dumb reasons. I mean, pick your poison. If it's not greedy bandits ransacking your town, it's tyrannical nobles razing each other's land in search of more power. So sure, people will die in the war, but the reforms it'll bring will save at least as many innocent citizens. Maybe even more.	Shez: Honestly? I think the whole thing's one big, ugly mess. I mean, look at how many innocent lives it's costing us. Still, I know this wasn't just some spur-of-the-moment decision. You gave it a lot of thought, and this was the best path you could find forward. So who really cares what little old me has to say?	Shez: I dunno. Don't think I really feel too strongly one way or the other. Edelgard: You have nothing to say? Nothing at all? Shez: That's how it goes when you're a merc. War, peace, doesn't matter—my job's the same either way. It's just money in, blade out. All there is to it.

Edelgard: I suppose that's one way of looking at it.
Shez: It's like you said. I'm in a unique position here.
Edelgard: Meaning you would've answered differently were you not a mercenary.
Shez: Uh, yeah. If I was a farmer, for example, I'd be hounding you day and night to end the war. Sure, you say you're gonna bring this "bright and beautiful future," but am I really gonna suffer for years, maybe even decades, waiting for it? The stuff you're doing now—enlisting my farmhands, trampling my fields, destroying my crops—just doesn't make it worth the wait. But you know the toll it's taking on your people, yet you choose to press on with the war anyway. So you've gotta have a good reason, right?
Edelgard: Yes, of course. You certainly don't mince words. Is it the years of mercenary work that made you this way, or have you always been like this?

Shez: Yeah, I think it just kinda comes with the territory. I've been at this a long time—and lost more than my fair share of friends over the years. Not to mention all the horrible things I've done just for a fistful of gold.	Shez: Pretty sure it's who I am. It was just me and my mom growing up, you see. We lived in a village, but for whatever reason she liked to keep to herself. So, I guess it rubbed off on me. I learned pretty quick not to get attached.

Edelgard: Is that so? I would be interested to hear more.
Shez: Trust me, it's not as interesting as it sounds.
Edelgard: Who says it has to be? Interesting or not, I'll have you tell me one of these days.
Shez: If you say so. Just promise not to freak out when you realize how boring I am, OK?
Edelgard: Do I seem like the type of person to "freak out" about such a thing? Perhaps don't answer that.

Shez: Oh, Edelgard. I'm glad I found you. Got a few?
Edelgard: Of course. What is it?
Shez: Well, remember how Hubert laid into me after the Knights of Seiros raided Enbarr? It got me thinking. What do I need to do for you to trust me again?
Edelgard: Nothing—Hubert and I stopped doubting you the moment that business was behind us. You work tirelessly for me, and I'm grateful for that. So please, there's no need to worry.
Shez: Still, we have no idea when those who slither in the dark might try to interfere again. Honestly, it kinda feels like there's more I should be doing to help. Like I'm just floating around without a purpose or something.
Edelgard: Very well. What do you propose?
Shez: Hmm. If I had to pick something, I'd say protecting you would be my top priority. Everyone's got a bone to pick with you—especially the church and those who slither in the dark—and they won't rest till they have your head. After all, the Imperial army's not gonna lose if we've got you at the top handing down orders. And I figure Hubert'll stay off my back as long as I put my energy into keeping you safe. Then you can lead us to victory and we'll all live trustfully ever after.
Edelgard: Perhaps. But I think you're forgetting something. The only way to protect me is by staying at my side— and therein lies a conundrum. Allowing you that close to me would in itself be proof of my trust, without which you would've never earned such an opportunity in the first place.

Edelgard: Hm. Very well. Do as you will. In the meanwhile, I'll tell Hubert... Well, I'm not entirely sure what I will tell him. At the very least, we know those who slither in the dark are able to shape-shift at will. So in a way, it doesn't matter who I choose to surround myself with. They could just as well turn out to be someone wholly different.

Shez: Thanks, Edelgard. I honestly could've sworn you were gonna say no.	Shez: Wait, are you sure? I know I'm the one who asked and all, but...really?

Edelgard: Of course. What I truly want to know is why you'd risk your life just to earn my trust.
Shez: Do you really have to ask? You reshaped my entire life. Before I met you, I had nobody. I was nobody. But you still chose me of all people to command one of your armies. Now I can't walk down the street without people yelling my name—and I've got a great life surrounded by amazing friends. All of it possible because of you.
Edelgard: That's not true. You would not have earned this post if you lacked the talent.
Shez: Maybe now, but before you came along nobody in the Empire gave a pegasus's backside about talent. You gave me a seat at the table when no one else would.
Edelgard: Ah! I see.

Edelgard: Good news. We've dislodged another foothold those who slither in the dark held in Empire territory.
Shez: Good news? That's great! So that soldier was one of theirs after all, huh?
Edelgard: He was. It's uncanny how you manage to identify their agents so precisely. Ordinary spies would be one thing, but these villains are another entirely.
Shez: I'd like to say it's just intuition, but there's more to it than that. It's my power. Their magic is almost identical to the one I use, so it's not hard for me to pick up on. Guess we have Hubert to thank for connecting the dots between the two.
Edelgard: How strange that you would hold such an important key. The more I look back, the more I realize... Without you among our ranks, I may never have broken the stranglehold those who slither in the dark exerted on the Empire.
Shez: Me? What did I do?
Edelgard: Our hidden foe was deeply entrenched in almost every facet of Adrestian society. The two were almost inseparable. And so, I turned a blind eye to the lives that were being lost to their cruel designs, opting instead to focus my energy on preparing for war. But then you came along, and helped show me a way to kill two snakes with one stone, as it were. You were the cog that was missing from the turnwheel. The one final push that urged me to act.

Shez: Right. Well, I'm not sure I can take credit for that, but I'm glad I could be there for you all the same. Really makes me wonder why you all didn't trust me, though.	Shez: Uh, yeah, sure. Whatever that means. You can be so confusing sometimes, you know that? Edelgard: Forgive me. You may be the only person I know who would look an emperor in the eye and speak their mind so freely. Shez: I dunno, I could totally see Ferdinand doing it, too.

Edelgard: Yes, I can see your point. It was my mistake. In any case, I'd like you to know just how pleased I am to have you fighting alongside us. You were a perfect stranger who owed nothing to the Empire, yet you're still here. That means much.
Shez: Eh, it wasn't that big a deal. I just needed some gold, and figured if anyone was gonna have the coin to spare, it'd be the Empire.
Edelgard: You know, some things are best left unsaid.
Shez: Oh, and you were really quick to compliment me back at the academy. That left an impression for sure. I mean, most nobles don't give us mercs the time of day. You were different.
Edelgard: It's nice to hear you say that.
Shez: And hey, I was right about you! I wouldn't be shining half as bright as I am today if I didn't hitch my wagon to yours. Trust me, no regrets here.

I don't wanna get left hanging like I did back in Enbarr. Edelgard: That wasn't my fault. I had simply never done it before.

Edelgard: We will reach the end of this path soon—all of us, together.

Maybe she'd throw me a bone from time to time, but that wouldn't make us training buddies the way you two apparently are. Hubert: Ah. Well, it is true this has been a long-running custom of ours.	Shez: I never would've guessed. Can't say I'm not jealous, though. Hubert: Shall I put in a request with Her Majesty on your behalf? I'm quite certain she'd join you. Shez: Oh, that's not what I meant. She's actually the one I'm jealous of. I mean, I never get to train with you. Hubert: Me?	Shez: No kidding? I don't think I've ever seen you two around here. Hubert: Naturally. We tend to pick times that allow us to avoid a crowd.

Hubert: In any case, if you do desire a session with either myself or Her Majesty, you only need ask. A mercenary with no backing such as yourself has much to gain by earning Lady Edelgard's favor. Of course, we would not be without benefit. Your rise in standing would paint an ideal picture for our people.
Shez: How do you mean?
Hubert: Many commoners crave progress. A path upward in life. And your example would prove that path exists. The commonfolk would never expect to see their emperor train alongside someone of your dubious origins. At least not outside the pages of a fairy tale.

Hubert: On the other hand, your presence would also cause great turmoil amongst the elites of our society. They may even despise you. A symbol of the ungrateful commoner granted privilege well beyond their station.
Shez: Oof. But hey, Dorothea's a commoner too. Why don't they hate her?
Hubert: Dorothea is a famed former songstress, well esteemed in the upper echelons of society. Your situation is vastly different.
Shez: Right. Well, no point worrying about it if it's gonna happen no matter what.
Hubert: Precisely. Things may yet change in the years ahead, but for now all we can do is live with it.
Shez: So coddling the elites means the commoners end up oppressed, while hoisting commoners up only agitates the elites. Glad I'm not the one who has to rule the Empire. This whole thing sounds like a total mess.
Hubert: Heh. A mess, indeed.

Shez: In that case, you should just keep picking commoners like me for all the important jobs. Strength in numbers, right? The more of us there are, the less anyone will be able to complain.
Hubert: Hm. I believe your point to be a sound one, but putting it into action will only heighten our chance of failure. Try as you may to trawl a river for jewels, you will most often find yourself hauling up mere pebbles instead.
Shez: I get what you mean...I think. Accidentally picking the wrong person could really hurt the emperor's reputation.
Hubert: And provide the perfect opening for nobles who want nothing more than for commoners to be "kept in their place." An utter disgrace. Here we stand amidst the flames of war, yet some on our side only seek to drag their compatriots down. There is no rot as fetid as that which plagues our foul aristocracy. It would not surprise me if they breathed noxious fumes.

Shez: Uh, come again?
Hubert: You are a mercenary captain, no? Surely there are worthy candidates for promotion among your subordinates? The situation would be far less volatile if any potential appointees came with your direct endorsement.
Shez: Oh good, no pressure at all. And if the person I pick doesn't work out?
Hubert: Assuming they are not wholly indefensible, we would do our utmost to shield them from criticism. Though I suppose if worst came to worst, we would be forced to sever ties with them...and you.

Shez: That's cold-blooded, Hubert. I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge, knowing what's at risk. Hubert: Nobody is forcing you to pick someone. If you think it impossible, I will not try to convince you otherwise.	Shez: I can respect that. Protecting the emperor is priority number one. Hubert: Indeed, it is the first and only priority. Do note, though, you needn't force yourself to pick someone if you fear the consequences.

Shez: Right, got it. I guess in the meantime, I'll let you know if I think of anyone who might be able to handle the job. Oh, and let's keep the whole "severing ties" thing to the real worst case scenario, OK? You might look the calm and logical type, but I know your emotions can get the better of you sometimes.
Hubert: ... A keener insight than I expected. Perhaps you truly are the right person for this task. Heh. Quite the eye you have on you.
Shez: Uh, thanks? My vision's not too bad, I guess.
Hubert: Now if you could only pair it with some intellect, we would have a true wonder on our hands.

Shez: Not in the slightest. Why, do you know something?
Hubert: Yes, actually, what with the riots in Hrym territory and the former Duke Aegir's attempted rebellion. Thanks to that we now have a lead on the insurgents within the Empire as well as those who slither in the dark. Speaking to the latter, I also tried to determine if they had been attempting to reach you, or otherwise thought you an ally. But at present it seems neither is the case. Regrettably.

Shez: "At present"? Still don't trust me, do you? And our conversations? The future of the Empire? Promoting commoners? I would've hoped you'd ease up at least a little after all that.	Shez: You and I have been talking a lot lately, Hubert. About the future of the Empire. Promoting commoners. I would've hoped I'd earned your trust by now, but I guess that's not how this thing goes. Not to say I don't get where you're coming from. The emperor's right-hand man can't afford to let his guard down.

Hubert: Believe me, it brings me no joy, and infact some guilt, to doubt you so. But I must be prepared for any eventuality. When needs must, I have made even my greatest enemy feel as though they are a trusted friend. Yet at times I have also shown extreme suspicion towards those who were in all manners undeserving of it.
Shez: Yeah, I get it. Keep your cards close to the chest. Never let them know what you're actually thinking. You really are something, you know that? I'm just glad we're on the same side.
Hubert: I must admit, I only tell you all this because I do, in fact, consider you deserving of my trust. Even if you were once connected to those who slither in the dark, that is clearly behind you now. So believe me when I say I have the utmost confidence in you.

Thanks, Hubert. Hubert: How very diplomatic. Just the response I would have expected from you.

Hubert: Enough on that, though. Our problem now is what lurks beneath your mind's veneer.
Shez: What do you mean?
Hubert: I can sense another you, bubbling away behind the one you present to the world. Call it...intuition. What really worries me is that you may one day shed this husk you bear now and become that someone else entirely.
Shez: ... Another me, huh? Well, I appreciate the concern, but even if that someone does exist, I won't let them overtake me. I mean, come on. I'd shove that other me right back where they came from and earn your trust once and for all. Though just so we're clear, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Hubert: Very well. I suppose I will have to take your word...for now. In any case, I hope that as we inscribe Fódlan's new future, we do so with you by our side.
