Vanguard (神将, Shinshou, ヴァンガード, Vangaado) is a class exclusive to Ike, a main character of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Specifically appearing in Radiant Dawn, it allows him to wield swords (including Ragnell) and axes (such as Urvan). The exclusive skill for the class is Aether, although Ike can learn Nihil upon advancing to the class if he has enough capacity.

Ike, as the main character of the game, automatically changes from the Hero to the Vanguard class at a cutscene prior to the start of Part 4's Prologue. He has strong stats all around, except for significantly weak resistance. Despite this, he manages to be a strong front-line unit, as the name reflects, with high HP and offensive capabilities. Story-wise, the name corresponds with Ike's status as the leader of an army.
