Scáthach

“ | Hey, what're you gettin' all sentimental on me for? | ” | — Scáthach, to Lana |
---|
Scáthach (Japanese: スカサハ Skasaher), formerly known as Ulster, is a prince of Isaach, the cousin of Crown Prince Shannan and one of the twin children of the presumed late Princess Ayra. Born during Ayra's travels with Sigurd of Chalphy, at age two he was escorted into hiding by Oifey and his elder cousin Shannan, along with his twin sister Larcei and Sigurd's son Seliph. Seventeen years later, he was part of the beginning of Seliph's revolution against the tyranny of the Grannvale Empire.
In the gameplay of Genealogy of the Holy War, if Ayra was not married in the course of the first generation, Scáthach's role is filled by Dalvin.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
While scouting, Scáthach observed the approach of King Danann's Grannvale forces toward Tirnanog and reported back this news, observing that it had been discovered as the hideout of Shannan's rebellion. On Shannan's orders in lieu of his absence, he strongly advised caution until such a time as Shannan and Oifey returned, but was overruled by Larcei and Seliph's insistence, and so departed with the two and Lana to take on Grannvale.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Unit performance
Scathach is a level 1 Myrmidon available from the beginning of the second generation. Regardless of who his father is, he inherits minor Od Holy Blood, increasing his skill and HP growth rates. He also has Astra, Follow-Up and Nihil as his baseline skillset - a strong offensive setup. Thanks to these advantages, Scathach is 'immune to bad pairings.' No matter who his father is, he will be competent at combat.
Unfortunately, Scathach is one of the many victims of Genealogy 's map design. The game strongly favors mounted units, since every map is very large and contains road tiles. Road tiles boost the movement of units moving across them. Since cavalry has higher movement, it benefits more, leaving unmounted units behind. Scathach falls behind the mounted frontline on every map except the one he joins in. The only reason he does not fall behind in his joining chapter is because Seliph, the lord, is unmounted, too. As soon as Seliph promotes, however, Scathach will see much less use. Not only because the lord is promoted, but because the player gains access to more mounted units. Finn, Nanna and Ares join soon, for instance.
Outside of his lack of a mount, Scathach is a solid combat unit. Regardless of who his father is, he can get pretty far in the arena, especially if he uses good swords. He has an A-rank in swords without investment, so he can use all swords except the Balmung. Swords are the best melee weapon type in Genealogy, because they weigh the least.
Scathach and Larcei are almost the same unit - they are both unmounted sword users with good combat. They even have similar statlines and the same A-rank in swords. Larcei's promoted class, Swordmaster, is better than Scathach's Forrest, but not by much. Generally, whatever applies to Scathach applies to Larcei as well, and vice versa. After promotion, they both one-round most enemies, thanks to their stats and skillsets. Their only problem, lasting for the entire second generation, is their unmounted status. And while it is only one problem, it is a very significant problem that prevents them from being very good.
Parentage influences
As for parentage, there are many pairings that make Larcei and Scathach good. Lex gives them Vantage and Paragon, as well as minor Neir Holy Blood. The Holy Blood increases their HP and defense growths, making them tougher to kill. Vantage is mostly irrelevant, but Paragon lets them gain levels and promote faster. Since they are available for the entire second generation, they use Paragon very well. The disadvantage of this pairing is that Lex cannot pass down swords.
Another option is Naoise, since he gives them Accost and Critical. This further improves their combat and gives them extra ways to attack more than once. A Jamke pairing has a similar result, except instead of Accost, he gives Adept. It is strictly worse, however, because Jamke cannot pass down swords, unlike Naoise. Larcei also gets Adept upon promotion, so Jamke's Adept is less useful for her.
Chulainn gives them major Od Holy Blood, boosting their skill and HP growths to insane levels. He also gives them *-rank in swords, letting both children use the Balmung. While Shannan cannot give Balmung to another unit, an exploit enables that. If the player is unwilling to use exploits, though, the *-rank will not benefit the children at all. Both children also gain Luna, further improving their combat. Finally, Chulainn can pass down swords all the way up to A-rank.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Scáthach, here known as "Ulster", is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War second-generation character set. He is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Lost Bloodlines DLC series.

Skill set
Like all male bonus units in Awakening, Ulster has access to all base class and advanced class skills available to standard male units.
Personality and character
According to Seliph and Larcei, under most circumstances Scáthach is hot-headed and eager when it comes to battle; however, this is balanced and sometimes outweighed by his sense of duty. To this end, when both Larcei and Seliph were calling for departing to respond to the impending Grannvale assault on Tirnanog, he was uncharacteristically reluctant to allow them to just leap into battle, as Shannan had tasked him with protecting Seliph in his absence.[2]
Love growths and events
|
- In Chapter 6, Scáthach can talk to Larcei at any time, giving her +1 Luck.
- In the Final Chapter, if they are lovers, Lana or Muirne can initiate a conversation with Scáthach, awarding him +5 Resistance.
