Rival Bands (Japanese: 傭兵戦争 Mercenary war) is the thirteenth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing Chapter 13 and having Panne married. There are no additional requirements to reach the chapter, as the chapter connects to the area Chapter 10 took place at.

Two rival mercenary bands are fighting over one piece of real estate in this chapter, and it's up to the player to decide which band to support en route to ending a needless skirmish—if they even wish to support one of the mercenary bands. One of the mercenary bands has recruited a taguel boy into their ranks; as it turns out, the taguel happens to be the son of a Shepherd of like species.

Plot

Main article: Rival Bands/Script

Near villages in Plegia, two mercenaries leading opposing groups—Gyral leading the Stonewall Knights, and Dalen leading the Riders of Dawn—argue over territory as the Shepherds arrive. Frederick notes that any fighting will be harmful to the villages, and that, as the groups are too hostile to negotiate, it would be best if they backed one side to expedite the fighting. As the battle starts, the player may chose to back the Stonewall Knights, the Riders of Dawn, or to fight both at once.

During the battle, if Chrom talks to Yarne, Chrom startles Yarne, and Yarne eagerly surrenders when prompted. If Panne talks to Yarne, Panne identifies Yarne as a taguel, and Yarne identifies her as his mother. Panne concludes he came from the future with Lucina, but is upset that her son has no "taguel pride" and is "consort[ing] with common thugs".

After the battle, Chrom wonders why the two mercenary groups fought, and Frederick informs him that they fight to dominate the limited sources of gold, and they become mercenaries as farmers' and merchants' profits are limited by banditry. If the player supported either group, the group will send thanks and a reward; if the player supported neither group, a villager will thank the Shepherds for driving off the mercenaries and give them a reward. If Yarne survived, Panne confronts him, asking his name; Panne states that Yarne is "living proof that man and taguel can coexist", but Yarne insists that Panne is the one who proved that by marrying a human.

Trivia

  • Law's End is one of five locations on the world map that connects to only one other location (in this case, only to The Midmire), and as such is a dead end. The other four are the Outrealm Gate, Plegia Castle, Warriors' Tomb, and Grima.
  • This chapter's premise of two warring factions, with the player being allowed to pick a side or choosing not to pick either one, may have served as a precursor to the three split storylines of Fire Emblem Fates.
