Appearance(s)

Ogma (Japanese: オグマ Oguma) is the leader of the mercenary warriors in the service of Talys. Originally a gladiator enslaved in Knorda's arena, he participated in a mass escape attempt, letting himself be captured so that everyone else, including Samuel, could escape; he was to be disciplined but was found by Princess Caeda, who instead recruited him into the Talys army. He is deployed by King Mostyn as Caeda's personal guard when she leaves with Marth in the War of Shadows. Three years later, Mostyn dispatches him to Grust to assist Lorenz in protecting the country's royal children, Jubelo and Yuliya, from Archanean forces.

Biography

Caeda protecting Ogma.

Ogma was the son of a low-ranking Archanean noble and a woman who was likely from Grust.[1] His father was executed in a political dispute, and Ogma was born in the penal colony of Pyrathi.[1] His mother died when he was young, and he was sold as a slave to an Archanean nobleman in Knorda.[1] He fought as a gladiator from the age of 14 and never lost a fight.[1] Fed up with being forced to fight, he eventually tried to escape, but let himself be captured to allow the other gladiators to escape; he was to be publicly executed by being whipped to death.[1] However, he never gave information regarding the whereabouts of his fellow gladiators.[2] After being whipped hundreds of times, Princess Caeda of Talys jumped onto him and took a blow from the whip, and the crowd's reaction gave the executioner no choice but to let Ogma go.[1] Caeda had her father, King Mostyn, buy Ogma, and he was given his freedom.[1] Caeda also tried to give him a tiara, which was a memento of her mother, in order to help Ogma financially.[1] From then on, Ogma served Talys.[3]

Mostyn would have Ogma fight with Marth in the War of Shadows.

In the War of Heroes, Ogma was sent by Mostyn to assist General Lorenz of Grust with protecting Jubelo and Yuliya, the children of the late Grustian king.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ogma joins on turn 1 in Chapter 2 as a Mercenary, and like many of the early joining units in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, he is quite a solid unit.

Considering his starting level is 2, Ogma has incredibly solid bases all around, with the exception being his resistance (a fault that every character in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light suffer from). His skill allows his hit rates to consistently stay high, save for a Steel Sword, and his 12 speed will keep him doubling for almost the entire game because a unit only needs 1 more Attack speed to double in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. His strength is quite mediocre at first however, stopping him from killing more bulky enemies such Knights and Cavaliers, something Marth can avoid thanks to his Rapier. He can luckily get out of his strength issue with a higher might sword such as the abundance Silver Swords, or even niche swords such as Armorslayers for Knights or Wyrmslayers for Wyvern Knights and Manaketes.

Ogma has 7 movement, the same as Marth, which allows him to keep up relatively well with the army, though Cavaliers and Pegasus Knight's will leave Ogma behind. His promotion to Hero on the surface seems almost useless due to how Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light calculates promotion bonuses, and the fact that Ogma will have surpassed many of the thresholds, save for possibly skill and defense. It is still highly recommended to promote him as it resets his level back to 1, giving him more level ups to obtain stats.

As stated above, Ogma suffers from his 0 resistance, meaning he takes heavy damage from magic. He can luckily counterattack them with a Levin Sword, doing a consistent 7 damage (14 if doubling). Another slight problem Ogma will face is hero crest competition, mainly from Navarre as Radd and Caesar will be performing poorly if Ogma is used by the point the player gets them.

This does not stop Ogma from being an outstanding unit however, as even if he is not invested in longterm, he can still be quite helpful setting up kills for others.

Book 2

Role

King Mostyn had deployed Ogma to Grust to serve under his old friend General Lorenz in protecting Grust's royal heirs, Jubelo and Yuliya, from Lang's oppressive rule. When the tide turns against Grust, Lorenz tries to have Ogma take the children away to Macedon to protect them, but when they refuse, Ogma instead departs alone, swearing to kill Lang. After Lorenz's death, the children are taken away by Lang; Ogma soon attacks Lang's headquarters at Castle Olbern and rescues the two, escaping with them to Macedon, where they are cornered at Holm Coast by a pirate group, saved only by the arrival of Sirius and Marth's forces.

From there, Ogma and the children join Marth's army. At the battle of Castle Olbern, Ogma encounters Samuel, whom everyone (including his employer Lang) has mistaken for Navarre. In order to repay Ogma for allowing him to escape the Knorda slave market, Samuel joins Marth's army.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Ogma joins the army in Chapter 2 with quite good bases. Of a particular note are his high Speed and Skill, thanks to the Mercenary class he joins as. Ogma is one of very few units in Marth's army, especially on higher difficulties, who can double some enemy units at base and will continue to double them for some time. That fact makes him useful for weakening and killing the axe users in his joining chapter and in the few chapters beyond. Thanks to his base C rank in swords, he can use the Killing Edge at base, which can be additionally helpful later on, once the player gains access to it. He also has a good Skill base, which makes him reliable at hitting enemies.

Ogma's long-term prospects are not as good as his immediate utility, however. His proficiency in swords quickly turns into a detriment, because he cannot use any other weapon type at base, and most enemy units in Shadow Dragon use lances. Reclassing leaves him with an E rank in whatever other weapon type he will gain, so it is not the best option for fixing that issue. Additionally, Ogma's defenses will eventually become more noticeably poor, particularly on higher difficulties. There is also a chance he will stop doubling enemies, also more likely on higher difficulties, and if Ogma cannot double enemies, most of his utility is gone. His growths may be decently good, but there is still a solid chance of this happening, at which point there are likely better candidates for Ogma's unit slot.

Overall, the peak of Ogma's usefulness and utility comes in his joining chapter and for a few chapters beyond, when enemy axe users are still prominent. His base C rank in swords combined with his high base Skill and Speed allow Ogma to double some enemies even on high difficulties and to hit them reliably with good swords, including the Killing Edge if it is given to him later. However, despite having decently good growths, Ogma's usefulness fades quickly as the game progresses. Most enemy units start using lances, which Ogma is disadvantaged against, and he eventually stops doubling enemies as well. The optimal way to use Ogma is to make use of his strengths while he is at his peak and to then stop deploying him when he is no longer as useful.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

Ogma on the run with Jubelo and Yuliya

As in Mystery of the Emblem, King Mostyn had deployed Ogma to Grust to serve under his old friend General Lorenz in protecting Grust's royal heirs, Jubelo and Yuliya, from Lang's oppressive rule.

At the battle of Castle Olbern, Ogma encounters Samuel, whom everyone (including his employer Lang) have mistaken for Navarre. In order to repay Ogma for allowing him to escape the Knorda slave market, Samuel joins Marth's army.

As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Ogma available through Everyone's Conditions: Ogma's Blade.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Depending on the player's dialogue choices at the end of Prologue 5, Ogma can be the boss of Prologue 6 and joins the player's army after the chapter is completed. Ogma is among the best units in the Prologue chapters due to his excellent bases.

Ogma rejoins Marth's army in Chapter 4 and remains available throughout the game. His base stats are solid and he can immediately contribute, but they are not high enough to fight hordes of enemies on the highest difficulty. He is among the strongest units available in the prologue, and can be used in Chapter 4 to defend Jubelo and Yuliya from oncoming enemies and to recruit Sirius. However, on higher difficulties, Ogma will lack the speed to double many of the enemies near his start, and he will usually die in three hits.

If the player has completed the game on Hard Mode, they unlock more reclass options for male units in future playthroughs, which grants Ogma access to excellent classes like Cavalier. When reclassed to a class with swords, Ogma will keep his C sword rank, but he will have the base level—usually E—of the other weapons that other classes have access to. Having more than one weapon type gives Ogma more control over the weapon triangle, which is useful against the high enemy variety in New Mystery of the Emblem. Additionally, the second reclass set grants access to Myrmidon and Swordmaster, which preserve the use of Ogma's high sword level while granting him higher speed.

Mystery of the Emblem Anime

Ogma plays a prominent role in the Fire Emblem OVA, here called Oguma. During the fight in Talys, when Marth and Caeda are cornered by Gazzak, he arrives with his troupe and engages Gazzak in a duel, killing him with a single stroke. He participated in the liberation of Galder Harbor, and a discussion with Caeda on her concerns about a Galder resident flirting with Marth prompts him to remember the day a young Caeda found him being whipped in Knorda after helping other gladiators escape, and recruited him into the service of Talys.

During the fight with the Soothsires, Ogma encounters Navarre and, being familiar with the legends surrounding the man, engages him in a duel. The two wound each other slightly, but the fight is broken up by Caeda, who convinces Navarre to ally with Marth's forces.

Ogma is the captain of Talys's mercenaries. He's an accomplished swordsman who places great value on loyalty, and everyone counts on him to get things done! Once an enslaved gladiator, Ogma planned to escape the arena with some of his allies, only for their attempt to end in failure. Ogma took full responsibility to save his friends, and just as he was about to be executed, a young Princess Caeda passed by! Having been saved at the last second by Caeda's intervention, Ogma entered her service. Later, during the War of Shadows, the King of Talys ordered him to join the Altean army, led by Prince Marth. The conflict dragged on, but Ogma kept Caeda safe all the way through to the end! I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll do next while working with the Order of Heroes!
