......The Loptyr Church never forgives betrayal. That is one of their highest tenets...
— Salem

Salem (Japanese: セイラム Salem) is a former dark priest of the Loptr Church, an hononary member of the Dandelion Bandits, and a member of Leif's liberation army.

Biography

Salem was a member of the Loptr Church. He departed the cult upon beginning to question its practices and was nearly killed for it by other Loptrians in the attempt, but was saved by Perne of the Dandelion thieves and joined his band. Salem was on guard duty for the Dandelion hideout on the night Leif's army passed through Dacia Forest, despite his recent injuries from the Loptrians. His plan was to use his Sleep staff to put to sleep anyone who came too close to the hideout, but he was still fought and captured by Leif's army. When Leif's army broke into the hideout to fight the thieves therein, Salem informed him of the true nature of the group and that he would try to sway Perne and the others to Leif's side.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Salem is a playable character. In Chapter 12, Salem appears as an enemy unit; he stands on a gate, the chapter's seize point. If he is captured and not released by the end of the chapter, and the chapter is completed under 20 turns, Salem will join the party at the start of Chapter 12x. In the same chapter, Salem can talk to an enemy Perne, recruiting him.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Salem is a Loptrian mage who joins your army roughly halfway through the game. His greatest asset is his C rank in staves. At the time he joins, he will likely be the only unit besides Safy who can wield staves at that high of a level. He can wield mid-level staves such as Physic and Restore right away, helping out the team while also allowing him to gain experience without risking his life. Getting to promotion should be Salem's top priority, as his promotion grants him an additional staff rank, giving him access to Rescue, Fortify, and Silence, and bringing him closer to the prestigious A rank for the all-powerful Warp and Rewarp staves. Staff users receive quite a lot of fatigue when using powerful staves, so having another high level staff user relieves some of the burden off of units like Safy, and allows for many more powerful staves to be used in more chapters.

Offensively, he has a D in all types of anima magic and a C in Dark Magic. This makes him the only playable unit with access to Dark Magic. Unfortunately, he is behind your other units statistically at the time you recruit him, with lackluster magic and speed and poor physical durability. His unique access to dark magic is largely irrelevant, as the Jormungand tome, while strong, is extremely heavy, making it generally inferior to the regular anima tomes which do not slow him down nearly as much. Fenrir is a very potent siege tome, though it can only be used by grinding up Salem's dark rank to A, which can only be done with Jormungand. Even when using anima tomes, Salem is overshadowed by Asbel, who has better offensive growths, a higher FCM, a movement star, and will likely be promoted with capped speed by then if trained. Generally, he will be more useful using staves, though he is able to attack if need be, and is more capable of doing so than most other staff users.

Personality

Salem is not particularly talkative, choosing to cut straight to the point and not waste words. Despite his Loptrian upbringing he is a decent person, which presumably motivated his questioning of and subsequent departure from the order.[1] He chose to join the Dandelions as he respected Perne's ethics as a noble thief in opposition to Grannvale,[2] and similarly advocated the Dandelions as a whole joining with Leif as a result of these common ideals.[3] He was also concerned about Tina's predicament and promised to help her locate her sister, Safy, after his wounds had healed, though with the arrival of Leif's army in which Safy participated this proved unnecessary.[4]

Endings

Salem, Dark Sage
After the war's end. Salem moved to a rural area and became a recluse. He recorded the story of his life in writing. His memoirs told the tale of a man who had once been a member of the infamous Loptr Church. To historians, they were an invaluable resource, offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Loptrian society.

Today, I'll be introducing you to Salem! He was once a member of the Loptr Church, worshippers of the dark god Loptous who were feared across Jugdral. Salem became disillusioned with the Loptr Church's creed and attempted to escape—only to be caught by pursuers who left him badly wounded! But in his hour of need, he was rescued and taken in by Perne of the Dandelion Bandits, a band of honorable thieves. I'm told that the other members of the Dandelions were glad to have Salem there to support them with his magic… I'm glad he found a more productive use for that dark magic he learned!

Salem: ...... The Lopto order does not tolerate traitors. That's the rule...
Perne: Traitor? You just wanted to leave the order, right? I don't think they had to kill you... But why did you decide to leave in the first place? Loptrian priests are even more important than the Emperor himself nowadays.

Salem: They have the same ideals as we do. I will explain it later. For now, just withdraw your blade!
