Sumia (Japanese: スミア Smia) is a playable character in Fire Emblem Awakening. She is a klutz, and because of this thinks little of herself. She has the unusual ability to understand the feelings of animals.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

Sumia first appears at the start of chapter 2, as one of the members of the Shepherds Lissa introduces Robin to. Sumia has been waiting for Chrom to return, and when he does, Sumia trips on some papers on the ground as she tries to approach him. She joins the Shepherds as they head out to deal with the Risen, but she does not participate in the battle. After the battle is finished, Sumia, along with Chrom, Robin, and Lissa, encounter a wounded Pegasus in a field. As Chrom tries to approach the Pegasus, it starts to attack, but Sumia calms it down and decides to stay behind and tend to its wounds.

At the start of chapter 3, Chrom's negotiations with Raimi fail and the Ferox troops trow out a number of Javelins at Chrom. Before any of them land, Sumia flies in on the back of the Pegasus from the last chapter and rescues Chrom. She joins the team in battles from here on. At the end of chapter 7, Chrom starts to worry about Emmeryn's retreat back to Ylisstol while the Shepherds are in Ferox. To try and snap Chrom out of it and focus on the task at hand, Sumia comes up and punches Chrom in his face, believing that is what Captain Phila meant when she said that "a good slap will break someone out of their doldrums." After this, Sumia does not take part in any more story conversations, aside from the possible marriage conversations that involve Chrom at the end of chapter 11 and the beginning and end of chapter 13.

If Sumia is married by or after chapter 13, a paralogue will open where Sumia meets her daughter from the future, Cynthia.

Sumia is also present in the opening cinematic of the game, at the point that shows Chrom married to her and with Lucina in her arms, implying a canonical pairing.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Sumia is the first Pegasus Knight to join your army in Awakening, and probably the only one for quite some time until Cordelia joins you later on. Like other early joining Pegasus Knights in the series, Sumia possesses excellent movement as well as high skill and speed bases and growths, but lacks HP and defense to the point where she has trouble surviving even a single attack from an enemy axe user at base. Her strength is also low at base, making it hard for her to deal decent damage to enemies even though she doubles them quite reliably. Luckily she can make use of various tools later on to counteract these issues, like pair-ups, tonics and better (effective) weaponry, but unlike some other characters, she will always need some kind of investment to leave her weak starting position behind.

The main reason to give Sumia this investment are her base class combined with her early jointime. Pegasus Knight is a very potent class, since it can promote into Dark Flier or Falcon Knight, two classes which are desired by many units thanks to their excellent mobility and skillsets. Other units have to take the detour of using a Second Seal in order to get access to those classes, if they can even reclass into Pegasus Knight at all, while Sumia only needs to gain experience in her base class and promote.

As a flier, Sumia has no trouble moving around freely and picking off weakened enemies, and since she has enough skill and speed to hit and double most enemies reliably, it is fairly easy to train her up. Her flying mobility makes her useful to ferry your stronger units over cliffs, deserts and all other kinds of usually hardly traversable terrain too, and it makes her able to hunt down enemy thieves who try to escape from battle as well. She is also decent against the early magic units, since those usually have poor defense but do decent damage against most of your combat units, who tend to have less resistance than defense. However, her base class makes her weak against bows and wind magic (though her resistance is usually high enough to ensure her to survive a hit by a wind tome) and does not allow her to take advantage of terrain bonuses, making it harder for her to survive at the front lines than it is for your other units.

Once Sumia's level is high enough, she can promote and become whether a Dark Flier or Falcon Knight. As mentioned, both of these classes are very good: Dark Flier can learn the extremely powerful Galeforce skill at level 15, giving a huge boost to Sumia's already good mobility, while Falcon Knights can use staves, especially the Rescue staff to transport people ahead, and get the Lancefaire skill at level 15, which improves her damage output. Both classes get a rally skill at level 5: the Dark Flier gets Rally Movement, which is useful if you want to get a unit ahead quickly, while the Falcon Knight gets Rally Speed, which makes doubling enemies a lot easier for all of your units. It is usually recommended to reclass her into a Dark Flier first to get Galeforce as quickly as possible, and maybe Falcon Knight afterwards to further improve her combat abilities while keeping the flying mobility.

Other class options for Sumia are the Knight or Cleric class and their respective promotions. The Knight class tree reduces her two major selling points, her high speed and mobility, but in return also grants the highest improvement to her weak points by greatly boosting her durability and strength. It also maintains Sumia's lance rank, while she is stuck with E staffs, tomes and axes when reclassing into Cleric, War Cleric, or Sage.

Sage allows Sumia to learn Rally Magic and Tomefaire, both of which are nice, but not fantastic skills on her, since it's easier to patch up her strength with good lances than training up her magic to the point where she can use tomes effectively. War Cleric gets the Renewal skill, which is in theory a great skill for every combat unit, but getting it usually is more trouble than worth it. Healtouch is also a skill that sounds nice for her in theory, since it would increase her healing as Falcon Knight, but once again reclassing into Cleric and limiting Sumia's abilities just to obtain one skill just is not worth it.

As Great Knight, she will remain somewhat mobile and can learn the Luna skill which can help her to kill bulky enemies more reliably. General is a very interesting class for her, since it offers her the biggest improvement in strength, defense and HP, but also reduces her movement the most. She will usually still be fast enough to not get doubled or even double slower enemies, and she can learn Rally Defense, a quite useful support skill, as well as Pavise, which sometimes reduces the damage she receives from meelee enemies and thus might allow her to stay at the front with less healing. It's possible to compensate for the loss of mobility by pairing her up with a mobile mounted unit. However, this also means that you're now using a mobile unit to ferry around a unit that usually could move around freely itself, and even carry other units around if you wished so. Both Knight promotions also reduce her resistance, making magical enemies more threatening for her.

Generally, Sumia should remain in her base class for most of the game since the Pegasus Knight promotions offer her the most interesting skills and the flying mobility often makes up for the extra stats and skills that other classes may offer to her.

All in all, Sumia is a decent unit with a weak start due to her lack of base strength, defense, and HP. Her class makes it worth using her though, and once she is trained up, she will easily become one of the better units in the first generation.

Personality

Sumia is a kind character who gets along well with people and animals alike. She can understand how animals behave and why, and will talk about animals for a long time when given the opportunity to do so. However, she doesn't think very highly of herself and tends to stay out of conversations. She also is infatuated with Chrom, an infatuation she shares with fellow Pegasus Knight, Cordelia, who she is friends with. Her most noticeable trait is her habit of managing to trip over nothing, often blaming the tripping on her boots, though she also tends to run into and drop objects.

Endings

Sumia, Maid of Flowers (single ending)
With Chrom's permission, Sumia traded her lance for a peaceful stretch of pasture on which to raise pegasi. Her flower-petal readings were said to bring good luck, and many asked her to tell their fortunes.

Chrom, Newly Exalted & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
After Grima's defeat, Chrom was officially welcomed as Ylisse's new exalt. Queen Sumia lived and breathed for him, and her flower-petal readings were said to bring good luck to all who received them.

Robin, High Deliverer & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
Many wrote of Robin's legendary exploits, but accounts of his origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone—he loved his wife, Sumia, above all else.

Frederick, Cold Lieutenant & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
As Ylisse's new knight captain, Frederick took charge of keeping the peace and training new recruits. His wife, Sumia, traded her lance for a peaceful stretch of pasture and raised a happy group of pegasi.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. His wife, Sumia, raised pegasi, and her flower-petal readings were said to bring good luck to all.

Henry, Twisted Mind & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
Henry settled down with Sumia and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn daughter was enthralled by her mother's pegasus and was soon begging for a place in the saddle.

Sumia is a member of Chrom’s militia called the Shepherds, and though she may be a soldier, she’s a particularly kind and gentle soul who loves flowers and animals! When Chrom visited Regna Ferox seeking aid for Ylisse, Sumia joined him. During their journey, she encountered a wounded pegasus, and they were able to communicate with one another. Afterward, Sumia and her pegasus partner helped Chrom out of a number of tight spots. She might be gentle, but when it’s time for action, she knows what to do! Sumia is both compassionate and determined. Though she’s sometimes the cause of the occasional accident or surprise, she’s an essential member of the Shepherds!
