— Cuan, to Sigurd

Cuan (キュアン) was the prince of Lenster, the son of King Calf, the father of Altenna and Leaf, a full-blooded descendant of the Crusader Noba, and the inheritor of the Gae Bolg. In his youth, he was educated at the Barhara military academy, where he met Sigurd of Chalphy and Eltshan of Nodion; the three quickly became close friends and pledged each other's support in times of need, and Cuan eventually married Sigurd's sister Ethlin. When he received word of the Verdane assault on Grandbell in 757, he departed Lenster with Ethlin and the young knight Fin to assist Sigurd, and travelled with him through Agustria to Silezha. There, Cuan departed Sigurd's group to return to Lenster and raise reinforcements to assist him, and on his way through the Yied Desert to do so, he and Ethlin were beseiged by the Thracian dragon knights and were killed, in what became known as the Yied Massacre.

Though he was never formally crowned during his life and in fact was killed before his father, years after his death he was nonetheless referred to as "King Cuan" as an honorary title.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Shortly after Sigurd and the remaining Chalphy knights departed to combat the Verdane invasion force and reclaim Jungby, Cuan, Ethlin and Fin arrived to assist him. Though both Sigurd and Ethlin apologised for what they saw as dragging him into the situation, Cuan insisted that he wouldn't have it any other way[1]. During Sigurd's sortie into Verdane to find the missing Adean, Cuan asked Ira about the Grandbell-Isaac war, concerned about the nature of it given his father's high regard for Isaac's King Mananan. He learned of the role of Rivough's leader in sparking the role, the assassination of Mananan, and Ira's role in being entrusted with Shanan.

Cuan remained with Sigurd's army throughout the conflict with Agustria. One year into the Grandbell occupation of the country, when its King Chagall started stirring trouble, Ethlin revealed to him that his father had entrusted her with the Gae Bolg, just in case; she handed it over to him, to better facilitate ending the conflict. The two and Fin initially accompanied Sigurd to Silezha when he fled there from Langobalt's army, but departed shortly thereafter to return to Lenster to raise assistance for Sigurd. During their time back in Lenster, their youngest child Leaf was born.

As Sigurd's army made its way from Silezha back to Grandbell, Cuan and Ethlin were also travelling there, now accompanied by Lenster's Lance Ritter squadron, with the intent of assisting Sigurd in opposing Langobalt and Reptor; the then-three-year-old Altenna was with them, while Leaf remained behind in Lenster under the care of Fin. However, as they crossed the Yied Desert, Thracia's King Trabant and a squad of Thracian dragon knights appeared in pursuit of them, hired by Veld of the Lopt Sect[2]. Taken by surprise, Cuan attempted to fight back as his knights were slaughtered, but even with the Gae Bolg he was overpowered and killed, as was Ethlin. From their corpses, Trabant took Altenna and the Gae Bolg, raised Altenna as his own daughter, and entrusted her with the Gae Bolg in his service.
