— The merchant

Summer Scramble is a downloadable content xenologue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a xenologue chapter, it does not officially bear a chapter number; if all xenologues are purchased and its list is viewed at the Outrealm Gate, Summer Scramble is the twentieth one from the top in the North American version of the game. Officially in Japan and unofficially in North America, Summer Scramble is part of the second series of DLC releases, a distinction that does not exist in the PAL regions.

This chapter was first made available on November 1, 2012 in Japan, May 2, 2013 in North America, and May 16-17 in the PAL regions.

In this chapter, the Shepherds find themselves at a beach resort, where they must beat back a bunch of brigands intent on invading the beach...while at the same time enjoying what the beach has to offer.

Chrom asks where the Shepherds are upon arriving at a new Outrealm, where a resident merchant reveals that the Shepherds finally made it and welcomes them to the Hotrealm, the Outrealms' hottest resort, and it's about time the Shepherds arrived--she was starting to worry; Chrom is about to ask what "Hotrealm" means, then changes course and tells the merchant they seem to have caught her changing outfits, asking the merchant finish changing first and then they can chat. The merchant asks Chrom what he means by finish, she's fully dressed already, then asks Chrom if he's ever seen a bikini before; Chrom asks if "bikini" is what they call smallclothes in the Hotrealm, to which the merchant appears surprised at the "smallclothes" remark and assumes the Shepherds really are from the sticks; the merchant reveals that a bikini is a two-piece swimsuit, then asks Chrom if he knows what a swimsuit is, to which Chrom states he's familiar with the concept. The merchant states that, by the way Chrom is staring, she swears this is the first time he'd seen a bikini, to which Chrom states he was merely admiring the design; the merchant states that the flush in Chrom's cheeks is just sunburn, or that Chrom's picturing someone else in a similar design, to which Chrom states he's doing nothing of the sort and asks the merchant what sort of degenerate she takes him for. The merchant states Chrom will get used to this, her bikini is pretty typical dress in the Hotrealm, and this is actually one of the more conservative outfits in the area; the merchant then asks herself where her manners are and asks to let her show the Shepherds to their cabana, to which Chrom asks if they even have a cabana, then notices it almost sounds like the merchant was expecting the Shepherds. The merchant states that she of course has been expecting the Shepherds, then asks Chrom who he thinks sent the invitation; Chrom, surprised at the mention of an invitation, states the Shepherds received no invitation. The merchant asks if the Shepherds received anything she sent, including the brochures and lotion samples, to which Chrom confirms they received nothing; the merchant states she cannot believe what's going on, she had the perfect vacation all planned out for the Shepherds, then curses out the interrealm mail service. The merchant then asks Chrom if his group is indeed the Shepherds, and that the merchant's sisters told her about how they've been going around saving the Outrealms and all agreed the least they could do is to give them a day pass to the resort; Chrom tells the merchant that's kind of her--not as kind as actually helping them in battle rather than just watching. The merchant then states that the Shepherds are bona fide celebrities and they were made to be stared at, to which Chrom states he doesn't think that's true at all; the merchant states that the Shepherds must stop protesting, they're going to frolic in the water and that's that. The merchant states that the sorcerers among the Shepherds have already changed into their swimsuits, and if they can do it, so can Chrom, asking Chrom to show a little skin; the merchant states she's got a swimsuit just for Chrom, and it's embroidered with the Ylissean Brand, to which Chrom asks whose idea it was to embroider the Brand smack in the middle of an area of the swimsuit. Chrom is about to mention the specific area when Frederick arrives on the scene, with Chrom asking Frederick to save him; the merchant asks Frederick to try on Chrom's swimsuit since Chrom won't wear it, to which Chrom states better Frederick than him--Frederick states his derriere is not worthy. Frederick then states that the beach has been overrun by brigands, with Chrom giving a shocked reaction and the merchant not appearing to take Frederick seriously, asking why everyone is out to ruin the Shepherds' special day; Chrom asks if anyone's hurt, to which Frederick states the beach was evacuated without incident, as it appears the brigands are more interested in hogging the beach, noting that it is a nice beach. Chrom states they can't take any chances, they'd better put these resort crashers to rout, calling the Shepherds into action. After Chrom and Frederick leave the scene, the merchant states things escalated fast, stating that the sorcerers didn't even have time to change out of their swimsuits; the merchant states that the Shepherds will put on a great show regardless of their attire, and she could even charge admission to watch the battle, asking herself where she put her ledger. Battle preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Chrom notices that this is some resort they've got in the Hotrealm, stating it's no wonder people come here to relax; he should let the troops rest up here once the fighting is done, given how the merchant was kind enough to send them an invitation. The merchant comes in on a loudspeaker calling the Shepherds to attention for a special announcement, then tests to see if the loudspeaker is actually working; Chrom asks what kind of giant would address the Shepherds from beyond the sea, to which Anna states she just lowered the volume and reveals she's using a Megaphone tome to talk to the Shepherds long distance, noting the Megaphone tome as an Anna original. The merchant states that sometimes kids get lost at the resort and their parents freak out, then asks the Shepherds that when they reply they clearly speak into the nearby seashells; Chrom notices the seashells and notes what their purpose is for, then asks the merchant what the special announcement is. The merchant tells Chrom to remember how she mentioned the Shepherds were celebrities--the Hotrealm put it to a vote, and they picked their four favorite Shepherds; Chrom appears surprised at how the Hotrealm voted on the Shepherds, to which the merchant confirms they did--she tells Chrom not to worry, all of the Shepherds are loved, just not equally. The merchant states that the four winners will receive a very special prize, and for the men, the winners are Chrom and Gaius, calling for a big round of applause; for the women, the winners are Tharja and Cordelia, asking if they're lovely. The merchant asks which of those four are deployed that day; pointing at a spot near a beach hut, the merchant asks any of those four to wait at that winner's circle to claim their prize. The merchant stated that this poll was just for the elder generation, the fruits of their loins will get their shot at glory another time; Chrom appears surprised at the "elder generation" remark and says he thinks he needs to sit down. The merchant says she hopes it's not heatstroke, and asks Chrom to drop down by the winners' circle and cool down; the Megaphone tome appears to turn off at this point. Chrom states that his name was called, and he supposes he'll go see what this is all about. The battle begins at this point.

The primary meat of this chapter stems in conversations between specific pairs of characters from the first generation; apart from pairs involving the Avatar and a Chrom/Cordelia pairing, these pairs are all of the same gender. These conversations take place over two parts; the first part can be initiated from the first turn, while the second part can be initiated from the third turn. Also part of this chapter's mechanics involve Chrom, Gaius, Cordelia, and Tharja each being able to wait at a specific spot near the beach hut, where a special scene involving that character will play out.

Once the battle ends, Chrom asks if the Shepherds got all of the brigands, to which the merchant confirms and states the Shepherds are lifesavers, apologizing that their day at the resort turned into such a chore; Chrom states it's all right, just knowing the merchant's safe is relaxation enough, to which the merchant thanks Chrom. The merchant states that the sun is starting to hang lower than a wet bathing suit, then states the Shepherds are free to spend the rest of the day swimming, beachcombing, or whatever--they could build a fire pit or have a clambake or something that night, with the merchant stating she's game; Chrom states that sounds like fun and says he'll let the others know. The merchant tells Chrom to simply tell her what he needs and she'll be at his service, the Shepherds have earned it, to which Chrom tells her (stating the merchant's name as Anna in the process) they'll do that. Once Chrom leaves the scene, the merchant asks if everyone in the area is gone, then states it's now time for her to rake in some serious money--she knew a Snapshot tome she and her sisters invented would come in handy, and she's now got pictures of the Shepherds wearing very little clothing; people will pay an arm and a leg for these pictures, to which the merchant asks herself if she should make a calendar. Frederick arrives on the scene and tells the merchant he has a question, spooking the merchant into asking Frederick if he wasn't listening in to what she was saying earlier, to which Frederick denies; the merchant asks Frederick what his question is, to which Frederick states the merchant said the Shepherds could build a fire pit, and asks where he could find some tinder, to which the merchant points out a spot and tells Frederick to help himself--all Frederick needs to do is leave some for their next guests. Frederick asks exactly how much tinder to leave, to which the merchant states significantly less than "all" is a good place to start; Frederick tells the merchant she has been most helpful. The merchant notes her exchange with Frederick was weird, stating she hopes he doesn't burn the resort down, saying suggesting the fire pit wasn't the best idea, but catching Frederick in an act of pyromania would make a great snapshot; the merchant goes to grab the Snapshot tome but notices it's gone and all her pictures with it, asking what could have happened to it. The merchant finally spots her Snapshot tome getting washed out to sea, concluding she must have dropped it when Frederick asked his question; Frederick returns to the scene and apologizes for bothering the merchant again. Frederick states he just realized he never took the time to properly express his gratitude--the merchant went out of her way that day to treat the Shepherds like honored guests that day, and as a result, the Shepherds had a splendid time, as he's never seen the others so happy, stating that the merchant truly has a wonderful heart; Frederick then thanks the merchant on behalf of Chrom and all of the Shepherds, and he will now get out of the merchant's hair. The merchant notes that her Snapshot tome is just a tiny speck on the horizon at this point, noting that her grand enterprise has been thwarted; all things considered, that day could have ended up much worse, and if she can't roll in gold, she may as well take the silver lining.

Trivia

  • The North American release of this chapter censors Tharja's swimsuit scene by having a curtain obscure Tharja's lower extremities. Fan reaction ironically stated that this action actually made the image appear to be more risqué than the uncensored Japanese and PAL region version of the scene, as apart from a small slip of red which is covered by the text box after a moment, the curtain implies Tharja to be nude in that area.
    • Popular opinion states that this may have been done to prevent the vanilla Awakening game from being given a Mature rating by the ESRB, despite the image in question not existing in the vanilla Awakening game to begin with.
    • Although not known to western fans until later, the existence of the censored version of Tharja's swimsuit scene was first revealed to Japanese gamers in the June 2013-dated issue of Nintendo Dream magazine, first released on April 20, 2013, 12 days before the North American release of the chapter.
  • Chrom, Gaius, Cordelia, and Tharja getting special swimsuit scenes and conversations with the Avatar to begin with are based on those characters winning a Japanese popularity poll among first-generation characters.
  • This chapter's Outrealm is one of two Outrealms to bear a specific name, in this case the Hotrealm. The other is the Bathrealm, the Outrealm of Hot-Spring Scramble.
  • This chapter is one of three DLC chapters to include non-Risen generic enemy units (the others being Infinite Regalia and Apotheosis).
