One evening, Chrom is standing around somewhere at the castle when Robin walks onto the scene. Robin asks Chrom why he is out so late; Chrom reveals he was dueling with some unpleasant thoughts. Chrom reveals that the group will march to Regna Ferox the following day to request additional soldiers, but reveals he needs to tell Robin something he/she needs to know: Not everything Gangrel said was a lie. Chrom's father, the previous exalt of Ylisse, did in fact wage war against Plegia for many years; it was a violent and brutal campaign that ended with his death 15 years prior to the game's events. Plegia is right to remember their suffering, but the war was no kinder to the Plegians. As the fighting dragged on, the army diminished in size--farmers who could barely wield a pitchfork were conscripted and sent to their deaths. At one point, there came to be no food at all, and the kingdom began to collapse. Chrom reveals that he was young, but remembers those dark times and how they affected Emmeryn. Robin says such an experience would change anyone. Chrom states that the previous exalt died before Emmeryn's tenth year, leaving her quite the legacy--Plegia's desire for vengeance as well as unbridled rage from her fellow Ylisseans, making Emmeryn a target for blame from all sides; her own subjects hurled insults and stones at her, and she still bears the scar from one. Emmeryn never let the people see her pain, to the point where only Chrom and Lissa understood. Robin claims that it must have been so hard; Chrom states he cannot claim to know how Emmeryn does it, that Chrom could never greet such hostility with warmth and patience. When the Ylissean people mocked and villified Emmeryn, she reached out and healed them--brought soldiers home to their families, and ended the war. When Ylisse's spirit was mended and the people "forgave" Emmeryn, she never resented them for any of it. Emmeryn represents the best of the halidom--the part most worth protecting; Emmeryn is peace. However, there are some men who would take advantage of such a quality, such as Gangrel. Chrom states that the day Gangrel understands peace is the day death gives it to him--and perhaps Chrom is to be death's agent. Emmeryn would never order Gangrel killed, and Chrom wouldn't wish her to. "Marth", coming onto the scene, reveals Chrom's words as being well spoken. When Chrom notices "Marth" is there, "Marth" bids Chrom and Robin good evening. Chrom asks how "Marth" got into the castle; "Marth" reveals he used the cleft in the castle wall, behind the maple grove. Chrom asks how "Marth" knew of that entrance; Robin asks if Chrom knows that place, and Chrom states he bashed in part of the wall while training the Shepherds, but it's only a small hole and Chrom thought it to be well concealed. "Marth" says the secret is safe with him, and reveals he's here to warn Chrom: Emmeryn's life is in danger. Chrom doesn't believe the claim--Emmeryn is guarded at all hours. "Marth" asks Chrom if he would believe him if he said he came from the future--a future where Emmeryn is killed right there that night. Chrom tells "Marth" he's lost his wits with his claim of having seen the future; "Marth" reveals he expected Chrom wouldn't believe him, and asks that he prove it.
Late at night, Robin finds Chrom standing around the castle. Chrom recounts how his father waged a long and bloody war with Plegia 15 years ago that only ended with his death; Emmeryn has been working tirelessly to reform Ylisse ever since, but men like Gangrel would take advantage of her kindness and must be put to death. "Marth" appears and claims that he has foreknowledge of the future and that Emmeryn is destined to be assassinated that night. He proves his claims by protecting Chrom from an assassin, but is blindsided by a second assassin; "his" mask is cut in two, revealing long hair and the face of a woman. The three hear an explosion from the direction of the palace, and set out to repel the intruders.

(Cutscene: "Foreseer") "Marth" draws his sword and reveals he's about to save Chrom's life from an apparently male figure in the bushes. An assassin emerges from the bush; "Marth" pulls an acrobatic maneuver and takes out the assassin, then asks Chrom if he trusts that this proof would suffice, to which Chrom agrees. A second assassin jumps into the scene from seemingly out of nowhere; "Marth" attempts to maneuver and face this assassin, but trips on the first assassin's sword on the ground. "Marth"'s mask breaks--revealing long hair and the face of a woman! Chrom races past "Marth" and takes care of the assassin, then turns toward her and shows his surprise to the fact that she's a woman; "Marth", having adjusted her vocal tone now that her secret's out, reveals that she's quite the actress as well, and is herself surprised that Chrom didn't figure out her secret until just then. An explosion is heard from the direction of the palace; Chrom, "Marth", and Robin run toward its direction. Once the cutscene ends, preparations begin.

Once battle preparations finish, we find Validar situated just outside the castle. Validar tells an assassin that he wants the Fire Emblem in his hand and Emmeryn dead on the floor, and not to let him be distracted from either purpose, to which the assassin agrees. The focus moves over to a thief named Gaius, who overheard the conversation; he wonders if he heard the conversation right, if they really are to kill Emmeryn. Gaius reveals he's here for the plunder, to line his pockets with some royal goods; Emmeryn is a sweet lady, and he would rob her blind, but would never kill her. The focus moves over to Emmeryn, where Chrom yells out to her; Emmeryn asks Chrom to take Lissa and flee while they still have time. Chrom states that they're not leaving her, and asks her to stay where it's safe. Robin then states that the assassins should scatter if the Shepherds can defeat their leader. Validar notices that Chrom wasn't even so much as wounded despite two assassins, and notices that some of the people present don't belong in the scene; after a quick focus back to Robin, Validar reveals that, after years of searching, fate is truly piling the gifts at his feet.

The scene shifts to a shot of the Parallel Falchion, which begins to gleam, a fact not lost on "Marth". Chrom asks what is wrong; "Marth" states it is not his concern, with Chrom unsurprisingly states nothing ever is, to which "Marth" promptly apologizes. Chrom asks "Marth" to stay by Emmeryn's door, the Shepherds will handle the killers. The battle begins at this point; Emmeryn tells Chrom to flee while he still can, that each of the people have only one life and she does not wish for it to be weighed against hers.

After one full turn of combat, a creature named Panne enters the area, stating that she knew there was wisdom slipping into the area with the rogues. She sees that the "man-spawn", as she refers to humans, claw at each other like savages; she intends to repay her warren's debt and then wash her hands of humans. Chrom believes another assassin has entered the area; "Marth" asks Chrom to hold on, that Panne is not their enemy. Chrom asks "Marth" if she knows Panne; "Marth" reveals that she knows of Panne, and that she would come to this area tonight. Chrom compliments "Marth" on being quite the prophet; "Marth" accepts the compliment and swears to Chrom that Panne is indeed an ally, to which Chrom believes. Chrom tells the Shepherds to, at least for now, let Panne be; Frederick asks if that action is wise, to which Chrom states that "Marth" has earned their trust and that she enjoys her secrets, such as her gender. But "Marth" has also saved the group's lives twice, and that's enough to earn Chrom's trust, to which "Marth" thanks Chrom. Chrom now calls out for the matter at hand: driving the scoundrels out of the castle.

If Chrom can talk to Gaius, he tells the latter to either drop his weapon or die where he stands; Gaius asks Chrom to take it easy, that he's not there to hurt anyone. Chrom asks Gaius why he runs with a band of assassins; Gaius says he's just trying to make a living--he's a thief, able to bust open doors, crack into chests, and the like. The assassins said they wanted to break into some type of vault, but nobody said anything of murder, and that he'd just as soon sit this mission out. Chrom asks Gaius if he's willing to prove his good intentions, that he needs all the help he can get to save Emmeryn's life; Gaius appears capable, and Chrom could use any information he has about their foes. Gaius says he'll prove his sincerity--if Chrom can sweeten the deal. Chrom thinks Gaius wants gold, and is about to give him some when drops something. Gaius notices the satchel Chrom dropped; Chrom reveals that it contains candies for Lissa, nothing Gaius would be interested in--or so he thinks. Gaius asks if the candies are sugar candies; Chrom assumes the candies would be sweet, and is attempting to continue his sentence when Gaius reveals that Chrom has a deal. Chrom is surprised that Gaius would risk his life for him over a bag of candy; Gaius said he would accept if Chrom "sweetened the deal". Gaius says he'd also happily accept the gold, and prepares to leave--unless Chrom has more of those candies. Chrom says he'll have to ask Lissa; the player is now able to control Gaius at this point.

Once the battle ends, Emmeryn, Chrom, Robin, and Phila will have gathered; Chrom thanks the gods that Emmeryn is safe. Emmeryn states it it is Chrom she has to thank; Phila begs Chrom for his forgiveness, that she failed her duty--the assassins should have never gotten into the castle in the first place. Chrom reveals that Phila could not have known what was coming, that only "Marth" could; Emmeryn asks about "Marth", and Chrom reveals he would speak more, then notices "Marth" has disappeared and asks Robin if he/she knows where "Marth" is. Robin doesn't know, aside from the fact that she was there a second ago; Chrom becomes frustrated over "Marth" having disappeared again.

We see "Marth" taking a stroll outside, and looks around a little before Chrom arrives. Chrom asks "Marth" if she is going somewhere, knowing of her bad habit to leave without saying goodbye. "Marth" reveals that she does indeed have a few bad habits, but Chrom reveals she has some good ones as well--such as saving Chrom's life as well as those of both his sisters, then asks "Marth" if there is a way he can repay her, such as a favor to grant. "Marth" states that hearing Chrom's offer is reward enough; Chrom asks if there has to be something, but "Marth" already has what she came for--history having been rewritten. Chrom asks what future has been averted; "Marth" reveals that, had the assassins succeeded, they would have stolen the Fire Emblem, thus leading to a great war and eventually the end of mankind--but "Marth" is sure that this revelation sounds like madness to Chrom. Chrom reveals it doesn't sound like madness, that he knows he can trust "Marth" and hopes to someday repay her favors. "Marth" hopes one day Chrom can keep his word, then leaves the area.

Back inside the castle, Emmeryn, Robin, Phila, and Panne have gathered. Emmeryn tells the "brave taguel" that there are not enough words to express her gratitude; Panne appears surprised to find Emmeryn knows the name of her species. Robin naturally asks what a taguel is; Panne reveals that she is a taguel--the last taguel, in fact. Taguel are shapeshifters, the likes of which humans called "beast" or "coney" in the midst of their hunts. Panne reveals she only helped because her warren owes Ylisse a debt, and asks that they not consider her a friend. Robin appears to not understand; Panne reveals humans understand precious little about the taguel, that it was humans who invaded her warren and slaughtered her people. Emmeryn asks if such an atrocity is true, that there are people who would do such a thing. Panne asks Emmeryn to not act so shocked, humans are all the same right down to their base desire to ruin and destroy all they touch, even each other. Emmeryn notes truth to Panne's words; she has been told that taguel society considers everyone to be treated as an equal, that mankind could have learned a lot from Panne's warren. The words may have come too late and mean too little, but deeply apologizes to Panne--humans have stolen her friends and family and made the world a lesser place, to which Phila reveals Emmeryn had no fault in this atrocity. Panne says that Emmeryn and Phila claim to be blameless yet are willing to apologize, and takes their words as nothing but wind. Emmeryn knows this, but reveals that they are all she has; Panne notices Emmeryn's sincerity, with Emmeryn feeling Panne's pain as her own, something Panne has never felt. Panne asks them to look at her, to see what she is, someone who will never trust mankind, yet the people before her are perhaps truly not like other humans.  Emmeryn states that all she asks is a chance to earn Panne's trust.

We cut to what appears to be a dark void, where Validar has somehow ended up. Validar walks and looks around for a little bit, then wonders how he was defeated, that his purpose was too significant to be thwarted.  An unknown shadowy figure walks onto the scene, then addresses Validar; Validar asks who the figure is, where the figure came from; the figure states their purpose as the power that compels Validar--Validar will not perish this night, it is not written to be that way. Validar must live on to author a destiny greater than he knows. Validar thins the figure's presence is impossible, it can't be who he thinks it is; the figure introduces himself as the wings of despair, the breath of ruin...the fell dragon, Grima.
Over the course of the ensuing battle, the Shepherds are joined by two new allies – Panne, last survivor of a rabbit-like race of shifters called the taguel, and Gaius, a thief with an insatiable sweet tooth. The Shepherds ultimately drive off the assassins and strike down their leader Validar.

Back inside the castle, Emmeryn, Phila, Chrom and Frederick have gathered. Phila reveals it will take time to investigate how the assassination plot got as far as it did, that they have no leads at present. Chrom accuses Plegia, that they would do anything for the Fire Emblem, then tells Emmeryn she can't stay in Ylisstol, and asks her to come to Ferox where it's safe. Emmeryn states that doing so would leave the people undefended when war is at Ylisse's borders--Chrom can't expect Ylisse to stand against Plegia without a leader, that Ylisse must know that their exalt stands with them. Chrom asks if something were to happen to Emmeryn. Frederick asks Emmeryn if she would relocate to the eastern palace for the time being, the eastern palace being a place other kingdoms know nothing about and where Emmeryn would be safer; Chrom asks Emmeryn to at least consider Frederick's proposal, that he can't leave for Ferox with Emmeryn in harm's way, to which Emmeryn accepts. Chrom thanks Emmeryn, then states the Shepherds would escort her to the eastern palace before heading north to the border.
Once the battle ends, Chrom intercepts "Marth" as she exits the castle; she admits that in the future they averted, Emmeryn would have died, the Fire Emblem would have been stolen, and a war would have triggered that would have led to the annihilation of humanity. Elsewhere, Validar wakes in a void, and is approached by a shadowy being that shares Robin's voice and identifies itself as Grima. Back inside the castle, Frederick and Chrom convince Emmeryn to relocate to Ylisse's eastern palace for her own safety.

This is the only chapter in the base game with a fail condition other than Chrom or Robin dying – in this case, Emmeryn. If the Thieves unlock the door, she's almost certainly dead. Deploy Robin and Chrom to the left side of the starting area and Frederick to the right. Robin will need to hold the enemies back – prioritize anyone with Counter. The Thieves will prioritize attacking over unlocking the door, so that gives you a little breathing room. Frederick will pull the odd enemy off her to give her some help. Make sure to have Chrom recruit Gaius and Gaius loot the chest. "Marth" is useful for drawing some fire, but will almost certainly be incapacitated. Don't worry – there's no reward for pulling her through.

At the end of this chapter on Lunatic+, you will have a minimum of 330 Renown (even if you skipped the paralogues). This means you can claim the Energy Drop.

What if... What if I told you I have seen the future? Would you believe me? A future where Emmeryn is killed. Here. Tonight.
— "Marth"

Foreseer (Japanese: 未来を知る者 Knower of the future) is the sixth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds must protect Emmeryn from an assassination attempt led by Validar. Several important plot points come into play in this chapter.

Plot

Main article: Foreseer/Script

Summary

Marth warns Chrom that Exalt Emmeryn will be assassinated. The plot is thwarted, but Marth is revealed to be a woman—and one with knowledge of the future.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Trivia

 • This chapter is the only one in the vanilla Awakening game, and one of two overall when factoring in DLC (the other being The Future Past 3), where the chapter is failed if someone specific other than Chrom or Robin dies.
