“ | We've been broadsided! Stay on guard everyone! | ” | — Azura |

Surprise Duet (Japanese: 歌姫と共に Together with the Songstress) is the third paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Fates. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both clearing chapter 7 in either Birthright or Revelation or clearing chapter 9 in Conquest, and have Azura married.
In this chapter, Azura's son, Shigure, has fled his Deeprealm and crash-lands on a ship Corrin and his/her army are sailing on in another Deeprealm with invaders in hot pursuit.
Plot
- Main article:
Surprise Duet/Script - The below plot corresponds to the use of a male Corrin. If you refresh this page, it is possible to get an alternate reading using a female Corrin instead. Corrin doesn't appear in the below plot, but part of the below plot still varies based on Corrin's gender.
We cut to a ship on the high sees of a Deeprealm where Azura states how she loves to sail the ocean and be free from the confines of land, likening the roar of the waves to the sweetest lullaby; Felicia tells Azura that they've got trouble, with Azura telling Felicia to slow down and tell her what's happening. Felicia, appearing to trip over her words, reveals that a young man riding a pegasus has crashed onto their ship, also stating that the pegasus itself also crashed; upon Azura making note of what Felicia said, she asks Felicia to point the way.
Onto another part of the ship where Azura runs onto the scene, she notices the pegasus rider is her son, Shigure; she then proceeds to ask him what brings him out into this area, to which Shigure states that he flew out of his Deeprealm to find her. Azura then notices that Shigure is hurt and his pegasus looks ready to collapse; Shigure states that they need to return to his Deeprealm at once, that his village is under attack and that he needs the help of Azura and her friends to help him save whoever's left. Azura, taking in what Shigure said, asks him what kind of enemy would attack his village, to which Shigure states it's hard to see the enemy sometimes--they're only semivisible yet fierce fighters, yet he states he's sure they're after him. Shigure states that his friends risked their lives to help him get away, implying that they're all dead; Azura tells Shigure he doesn't know if his friends are dead, then states that she senses someone.
Another ship arrives on the scene carrying semivisible soldiers aboard, to which Shigure notes are the ones invading his village; Azura apologizes and states that this turn of events is her fault, they're after him because of her. Shigure asks Azura what she would have fault for, to which Azura explains that she can't explain at that time or in this area, then asks him for a moment.
Azura asks Shigure to stay close as the enemies appear to be readying an attack and states she won't let them get their hands on him; Shigure again asks Azura who the enemies are and why she said that what's going on is her fault, to which Azura states it has to remain a mystery for at least a little bit longer, after which Shigure asks Azura to tell that to his friends. Azura states she had little choice and asks Shigure to hide himself, the least she can do is take care of the enemies; Shigure contemplates why Azura would hide deadly secrets from him and states that this fight is his and that he must avenge his friends, to which Azura tells Shigure that the stakes are higher than anything he can imagine--but if he insists on fighting, that he needs to promise her that he'll do it from a safe distance. Shigure states that, since his friends didn't have any such choice, he won't shy from battle; Azura tells Shigure that she promises that she and her friends will keep him as safe as can be--losing him would ruin her, and that he will live even at the cost of her life. Azura states that they won't lose if she can help it, that she and her friends will make the enemies pay; Azura tells everyone to prepare for battle, to which Shigure tells her he's with her all the way. Preparations take place at this point.
Once preparatons are finished, the northern enemy ship docks into the central ship; Azura states that they've been broadsided and tells everyone to stay on guard. The battle begins at this point.
Once the battle ends, Azura states that the battle is won, but tells Shigure that his worst fears have proven true--she slipped away to his Deeprealm for a moment and found out that the invaders razed his village, nobody is left, everyone who took care of him in her stead is dead; as Shigure cries out at this revelation, Azura apologizes and begins to states what might have happened if they'd come sooner and been able to warn Shigure about the invaders, to which Shigure tells Azura that she and her friends have clearly known these evils and more--he's at fault for being a child too long, his eyes have been closed, but at least his heart has been opened. Shigure states that he can imagine what it's like to live in Azura's world, yet as she still finds it in herself to sing that so must he; Azura, upon hearing that Shigure can sing, asks Shigure what he plans to sing, to which Shigure tells Azura that she knows the song well. At this point, Shigure begins to hum Lost in Thoughts All Alone, to which Azura states she does know that song well and asks Shigure if he plans to sing it as a requiem for his dead--noting the notion as beautiful and that Shigure's friends would be moved to tears even beyond the clouds, and that surely a melancholy rain will fall upon his village; Shigure then asks Azura what he's to do now, as he now has nobody left except Azura, to which Azura states she has no choice but to find another place to hide him. Shigure states he doesn't want to hide anymore and tells Azura that he's joining her cause, to which Azura tells him that he must stay safe; Shigure states that his friends lost their lives trying to save him and he needs to learn to protect himself--he needs to get strong enough so he can make the same sacrifice for others. Azura tells Shigure that he needs to let her protect him when she can, and he cannot deny her that; Shigure states that his heart is singing a song of hope for the future, to which Azura asks that they make it a duet, to which Shigure agrees.
Summary
Azura's son, Shigure, arrives wounded to the ship that they are traveling on. The enemies pursuing Shigure catch up to the ship and attack.

Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter can first be unlocked (after completing chapter 7 in Birthright and Revelation, or after completing chapter 9 in Conquest). Felicia is only a returning character if Corrin is male, while Jakob is only a returning character if Corrin is female. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started.
Item data
There are no items in this chapter.
